I went to the Carolina-Stetson Super Regional in Chapel Hill this past weekend. A couple of observations:
- Stetson was not as poised as UNC, which is expected as this was the furthest Stetson had even advanced in the baseball tourney (ex. Stetson's ace hit the first UNC batter with the first pitch of the game, and he overthrew the ball in the 1st inning.
- UNC is a very good hitting team. UNC scored 7 runs in both victories with power and timely hitting. Stetson was 1-11 at one point with men in scoring position
- Stetson got hosed, as the little A-Sun rep, by not being awarded the super regional location, as UNC was rated lower than Stetson (not in seeding)
- Stetson did have a chance in both games to tie or win the games in the 9th innings
- UNC poise (homefield) vs. Stetson's first trip: the home crowd of 4k for UNC and Stetson's newness to the intensity of play, played to UNC's advantage. In repeat performances, one can expect Stetson to be much more deliberate rather than rattled in the moment
And it was good quality baseball in a great environment and Stetson fans, Jeff Altier AD of Stetson told me there were approximately 300 tickets sold for Stetson. A good representation.
Next year when LU plays Stetson in Deland, that is going to be a fun series to watch.
