RE: Countdown to ACC Network
Here's an interesting comment from David Teel which was quoted by AwfulAnnouncing:

Quote:“While ESPN offers you a linear production guideline, it’s basically a minimum standard. That is the bare minimum, and you shouldn’t go into it thinking you’re just going to need to purchase the bare minimum with regard to anything, from lenses to replay to audio mixers. …

SEC schools were so rushed, they’ve all had to add to infrastructure they initially built because they don’t have enough equipment to support (simultaneous linear productions). Most of them built one linear-ready control room, and now they’re going back and building a second or third, and that’s what we’re trying to get out in front on in the next year. …

“The conference as a whole has X number of linear broadcasts they have to deliver. If they see that Virginia Tech doesn’t necessarily have the best equipment, Virginia Tech might not get selected for (as many) linear broadcasts. Let’s make sure our minimum is above their minimum.”

Sounds like ESPN learned some hard lessons with the launch of the SEC Network which they are trying to correct with the ACC Network launch.

Duke, UVA and FSU are ahead of schedule. Duke studios were part of upgrades to the football stadium. UVA studios were part of upgrades to the basketball stadium. They still have to connect the football stadium.

UNC funding was approved in June 2017. Studios will be in Koury Natatorium. That sounds odd but considering it is next door to the Dean Dome and they are talking about a major remodel or demo of the dome, it makes sense.

NCSU funding was approved about the same time. Studios will be located at the Murphy Center at the football stadium.

I did see BC had job ads posted.

ESPN wanted to do start testing a year before the official launch. That may be where the idea of the ACCN starting this summer came from.

The network will eventually broadcast 975 events per year.

Clemson built facilities in the Reeves Football complex and is expanding existing broadcast facilities in the Jervey Center when basketball moved it's operation to Littlejohn after the refurb.

Being the #1 Broadcast Journalism school with SOA facilities...Cuse is doing some smaller things like running Fiber Optic out to the Softball Field.

They said there would be a mass exodus after the UMBC departure. There wasn't. They said there would never be a GOR. The GOR was signed. They said there would never be a ACCN. It's kicking off in a year. They still say that the ACCN will never make decent money. We'll see how it plays out. There was a precarious time after the departure of UMBC, to be sure, but the conference has been pretty darn resilient.

That's cause the ACC schools want to be together. The NC and VA core along with Ga Tech enjoys sharing a conference with each other.

I dunno if I'd put Cavman in there. A better way to sum up GT's cross-conference interests would be they want to play teams on I-20 (east of the Mississippi River), I-75 (south of the Ohio River), and I-85.

I-20: USC-East, Alabama
I-75: Florida State, Tennessee (gap) Miami, Kentucky
I-85: UGAg, Clemson, Auburn, Duke, UNC (gap) NC State, Wake Forest

That really does get most of it. Beyond that ... Notre Dame & Virginia Tech might be it.

In the new world of realignment, where travel will be key, it only makes sense to bring the chickens home to roost.

No way the chickens ever leave the SEC. It's their one excuse for Clemson stomping a mudhole in them (happens more often than not). "Hey, we're in the SEC, so we're tired from our conference schedule." Oddly enough, when they win, it is also because of their tough SEC schedule.

I really wish NCAA rules would change to allow 3 divisions. That way, we wouldn't have to take an ugly 16th team if ND ever decides to join in football. Personally, I don't believe they will ever join in football just because the current arrangement is mutually beneficial. Neither party is frantic to make that happen at this point. 15 would also allow us to take WVU (if they ever get out from under the GOR) and not take a G5 for the 16th team. 15 with WVU, BC, Syracuse, Pitt, and Louisville in one division works nicely too.

RE: Countdown to ACC Network
All this talk of schools just getting started made me wonder if they'll all be ready, so... I asked David Teel" "Will all 15 schools be ready by August, or are some seriously lagging behind schedule?"

Teel replied: "Swofford told me at ACC tournament in Brooklyn that schools are on schedule. Channel should launch as planned."

RE: Countdown to ACC Network
In case anyone missed it, a few months ago ESPN finalized carriage with Altice, the big carrier in NYC. It includes ACC carriage, and no indication it was at a discount of any kind compared to the SECN, but of course that's not SEC country. In fact, the new deal gets the SECN on Altice for the first time, as it had been one of the few holdouts. So it looks like an instance where ESPN was able to leverage the ACC Network to get more out of the SECN. Probably not too many places that's going to be the case though.

This whole thing is going to work because of all the carriage deals that are up for renewal between announcement and 2019 launch. I don't anticipate ESPN having much trouble getting the ACC on. Would have been a whole different ballgame had they had to strongarm stations into adding it to existing contracts. In this one point at least, I think ESPN and Swofford knew exactly what they were doing, and what they didn't want to do - have a long drawn out carriage ramp up. Revenue, quality, programming, etc remains to be seen, but actual carriage is something I'm 99.3% not worried about. I can't imagine they would have miscalculated that part of the plan that dramatically, with it being extremely near the top of their priorities.

■What was the biggest surprise?

I am blown away by the fact that ESPN was able to get carriage for both ACC Network and SEC Network on cable systems that span Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York — areas that never will be confused for Tobacco Road or Tuscaloosa. ACC brass, in particular, have to be overjoyed, as this one deal makes its planned 2019 launch as close to a sure thing as you can get.

We may never know but if the SEC and the ACC are getting the same carriage rate in NYC, it's a clear win for the SEC. I wonder how ESPN is threading that needle. The cable companies don't care how the money is divided between the SEC and ACC. They're just interested in the package price. Maybe they'll base the split on ratings.

No, it's a clear win for ESPN and ESPN is taking care of both the SEC and the ACC.
Now if you were a Big 12 president and have lived the turmoil or even watched it from afar and you had an opportunity to place your school in a conference where there was long term security, where would you seek shelter?

I assume* this will go down one of two ways:
1) both leagues get the same carriage rates everywhere, or
2) each gets in or out of footprint rates on their own.

If it's #2, the ACC got a higher rate than the SEC in NY, etc.

* but you know what happens when we assume the ACC negotiated a good deal...

Indeed. History shows it's best to wait and see what the deal really is before crowing about it because the ACC has too often in the past snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Like our current media deal, the one-sided deal with the parasites, and the Orange Bowl payout.

I really do get a good bit of enjoyment out of the fact that the ND/ACC deal bothers you so much. Good times.

From what I read, it wasn't just ESPN. Disney threw their weight behind it and the carriage is for Disney channels along with ESPN channels, SECN and ACCN. Looks like the strategy is to package everything together, if so, really can't see too many carriers turning it down.

Even a couple of Notre Dame games per year might help drive up subscriber fees.

As for distribution, don’t underestimate the school’s relationship with the nation’s largest cable provider, Comcast — NBC’s parent company. Its No. 1 market is Notre Dame alumni hub Chicago, and its coverage areas include ACC states Florida, Georgia, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.

2 SIDES TO EVERY STORY

I'd be shocked if the ND @ Louisville game is on the ACC Network because it's a Labor Day Monday night game. On the other hand, the game Saturday Nov. 9th at Duke is a whole different story - for that one, I'd be surprised if it ISN'T on the ACC Network.

When Swofford became commissioner in 1997, men’s basketball revenue, television and postseason, was comparable to football. Now football lords over all, and its renaissance in the ACC has stabilized membership and positioned the league to partner with ESPN on a cable channel, set to launch in 2019.

get out of here with that frou frou chi chi crap ...
football is where it's at ...
winter, spring, summer or fall all U got to do is call ...

I'LL BE THERE

Way more basketball content. The football content to put on the ACC Network will have low value -- like BC versus some I-AA team. There's enough basketball content available that you can put some decent conference games on the network.
