Yes?
The large conference contradicts the position others have argued that splitting the football revenue distributions and NCAA basketball credits with a large group of schools does not make economic sense. Better to stay more compact in a 9 or 10 school configuration.
Well, if you recall, my actual words were "looks something like" I also said Ohio probably doesn't play ball and I'm not sold on Coastal, drop them both and I'm at 14, I've also said many times I prefer to stay east of the Mississippi entirely but included La Tech as I believe they are worth the westward expansion and my conference is largely built around rivalries so having them with USM is a big selling point, so leave out La Tech and if USM "goes west" with them that's 12. There are lots of variables and moving parts, but some combination of the 16 programs listed would be my preference.
The problem with going small is it leaves a big mess of 14 or 15 leftovers who may not have much interest in playing together that would then be forced to make the best of it or possibly split and backfill with more FCS and/or NMSU or Liberty.
Whereas the 16 member conference I threw out there would leave a far neater group of:
Troy
Arkansas State
Louisiana
ULM
Rice
UTSA
Texas State
UNT
UTEP
That could then decide to stay at 9 or kick the tires on Missouri State, Lamar, SHSU, UCA, NMSU to go to 10, 12, or 14.

This conference still stretches from Norfolk, to Fort Lauderdale to El Paso.
Hard pass.
Ok no problem next team up. MTSU out WKU in at 29.4.

This idea is bad and does not address the issue at hand, but you know that.

It seems to work very well for the AAC a league composed of the highest remaining athletic budgets in the G5 world. Traveling from Storrs to Orlando to Houston is roughly about the same distance as traveling from Norfolk to Boca Raton to El Paso. If the money is there traveling expenses will not be an issue.

What about the CUSA and SBC media deals makes you think that our combined cream of the crop would produce anything close to what the AAC sees?
Further, they all have deeper pockets to begin with, ECU and USF are the only programs that don't have at least a 10% higher budget than ODU does.

He simply pulled from (likely) USA Today, which doesn't include privates.

Sorry for not including RICE. Had I known that information they would have been the third university listed. MTPiKapp is correct I plugged those numbers in from USA Today.

Media deals is soo hit and miss since realignment the last go around. I don't think any collective will really raise eyebrows, not in the short term anyways. We have a few AAC level schools (not talking budget here, just competitiveness, name recognition) mixed with true sunbelt level schools between the two leagues. I could foresee a MACish deal in the future, but who knows how long that would be if a change of membership took place, and it all depends on the health of the media companies that we seem to overlook sometimes. I still say take the best performers, best names available, work with it and see where the cards are in a few years. Most decent to good football programs in both leagues have decent basketball as well, minus Ark State, GS, App, and Troy most years. Make no mistake, basketball or football will likely never rise to AAC money or overall competition, but it can become 2nd or 3rd on the G5 league list.

No problem. If I were Joe Karlgaard, I would make the Rice budget hard to find, too. Karlgaard may be the AD with the worst performance for football, men's basketball, and now baseball since I was a student in the early 1980s. He spends a lot for the success Rice has had in the Olympic sports.
