If, however, I'm wrong, then I'll definitely say so and offer my congratulations to a revitalized Memphis program. I'm just using past experience inform my opinion on the matter.

Good luck, Tigers. 04-cheers

we've done this before, though. After Dana Kirk, Memphis handed it's program over to Tiger star Larry Finch, who had no head coaching experience. He led Memphis to an Elite Eight and Sweet 16...he recruited players like Penny Hardaway, Elliot Perry, and Lorenzen Wright. I'm hoping it goes more Fred Hoiberg and less Clyde Drexler lol

Glad to hear y'all have dealt with this type of situation before. Hope it works out for you like it did with Larry Finch. Good luck. 04-cheers

News flash: I know you guys have been more worried about how quickly you could fire your coach over the last decade, but those stories have come up EVERY year for the last 5 years ... Marshall has been on EVERY wish list of any P5 that opened up for 5 years. They don't mean anything. That's my point. If you are using that as your basis of claims that it's possible .. then it's no wonder the Memphis rumor mill is so dumb.

Here is your first post in this thread. Let's see you word wiggle out this time.

http://csnbbs.com/thread-846102-post-151...id15191758

I quote you:

TripleA Wrote:

That's the first time you have heard someone even mention the possibility that Marshall might talk to Louisville? If so, you must lead a sheltered life.

Stickboy46 Wrote:

TBH, I haven't heard it from anyone outside of Memphis ... Maybe a few years ago when there were rumors that Pitino might be out then. But nothing this go around.

It's also be nearly exclusively been mentioned when talking about Lomax ... it turns into "well when Marshall bolts for Louisville, Lomax can get out of his LOI". I don't think I've heard it in any other context. ...

You've yet to post anything that says it's happening .. That's my point. Memphis fans are talking like it's happening and backing it up with a bunch of sportwriters wish lists???? I'm sorry that you can't comprehend that.

I have still yet to hear anything about it happening from anyone outside of Memphis.

Read my words. I never qualified it as happening. I said "even mention the possibility that Marshall might talk to Louisville?"

All those articles mention that Marshall should be considered as the next UL coach. That's a "possibility."

I'm out. Blather on, and keep shoveling that dirt on your head.

Actually no posting that someone with zero association with Louisville OR Marshall saying that Louisville should talk to Marshall doesn't make it a possibility that they will. I'm not sure why this such a hard concept.

The Memphis rumor mill makes soooo much sense now though. If someone somewhere says it ... it's true.

Good GOD, you are dense. As Andy Dufresne said to the warden, "how can you be so obtuse? Obtuse? Is it deliberate?"

Someone saying something is "a possibility" and someone saying something "is true"

ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS....

IS THIS WHAT WICHITA STATE IS CHURNING OUT?????

Haven't you heard? Gregg Marshall has made it out of the 1st weekend twice in 11 years at Wichita. That qualifies them as a powerhouse.

Fun fact:

Marshall at Wichita - 9 NCAA wins, 1 sweet 16, 1 Final 4
Memphis since Marshall at Wichita - 9 NCAA wins, 1 NC game, 1 sweet 16 + Tubby

Their "golden age"

Very much so. I don't think its a guarantee home run like some but I also don't think we can automatically assume it will bomb like others do.

What it will do is get people back into the seats and the donations back to an early part of this decade level.

It likely depends on the Assistants he chooses. He certainly needs some college ball experts.

That's certainly logical, and true to some extent, but I think that is being overplayed a bit. Penny is not exactly a stranger to basketball, and he has proven he can coach a bit in HS, with 3 straight 'ships. Plus AAU. And Tony Madlock seems to be one of his AC choices, and he was the Ole Miss interim HC until last week.

What I think he needs more help with is learning all the ins and outs of being a college HC away from the court. APRs, getting kids to classes, technical recruiting compliance issues, etc. Those are areas to which he has had little or no exposure.

The basketball Xs and Os will come, and Madlock alone can help, too. We'll jsut have to see who else he hires.

Mike Miller seems out now, who would have been solely a recruiting asset. Barbee was never really an item. I'm hoping for Gregg Marshall or Mark Few, plus a recruiter. 03-lmfao

That's good news that Brown is no longer in the mix.

I wonder if he was ever really in the mix or if his name was just mentioned to generate additional clicks.

That's a good question. IDK, but I'm pretty sure that was floated by Penny or those around him, maybe as a trial balloon, once Memphis contacted him about the HC job. So that would have nothing to do with media clicks.

My guess is that Penny wanted Brown, and Larry might have been receptive, but maybe our admin wouldn't buy it. Being clean was a main reason we hired Tubby.

Coaching High School is nothing like coaching major college basketball he better surround himself with some really good assistants.

Look, today instead of people talking about how much the AAC sucked it up in the tournament, it's all about Memphis baby. That's one good thing right off the bat, so cheer up, this is great for the conference as well.

Oh it's a brilliant move. Until he has to coach games and then becomes the next Isiah Thomas. The shine will wear off the turd.

Hope I am wrong

Penny is a turd of a human being... I hope he does well for the Tigers though.. The American needs Memphis basketball to get back to it's old winning ways...

You're basing that on how he reacted to fans when he was in his early 20s in Orlando? Maybe you should study up a bit.

The dude is 46 now, moved back to Memphis, gives of his time and money to charitable causes, coached Middle School for 3 years to help his best friend who was dying, coached East High school to follow on with some of those same kids, and is nothing but kind and gracious in public.

Watch this, beginning to end, if you have 13 minutes. It might help some with your perception of Penny.

Not sure why anybody thinks Memphis fans, or Penny, don't understand that, as well. And Penny's first apparent hire, Tony Madlock, has lots of AC college coaching experience, and just finished a stint as interim HC at Ole Miss. His HS teams actually played great D. When has anyone seen that lately, lol? And we know he will run up tempo. Now we may have the recruits to pull it off.

I'm hoping he comes up with one great recruiter and one ex-college HC, but either way, I think he will be fine in that area.

It is a huge, attention getting move. Personally, I think Tubby should have been given at least 3 years, but this hire should put fans in the seats. It may not end up working out, but it is one of those high risk, potentially high reward moves.
