There are rumors to that effect. It has also been reported on empty.org, for what it's worth that Shaq was spotted this weekend in Memphis. The rumors are flying fast and furious right now though. Shaq has even been rumored to be a possible assistant coach.

There was a substantial interest when Michael Jordan's son signed with UCF. How did that turn out for UCF?

Jordan’s son was a 3 star recruit. Shaqs son is a 4 Star with offers from high level programs and a top 50 player in his class. There is no comparison.

RE: Penny Hardaway is Memphis' New HC - Opinion's ?
Memphis fans are aware of Penny's lack of experience on the D1 level. That's a given. He's looking at some strong assistants and has already hired Tony Madlock, the Ole Miss interim.

"There are skeptics, even Hardaway knows, who insist it's insane to turn a high-major program over to somebody who has never coached college basketball at any level. Because for every Fred Hoiberg who succeeded without any prior college-coaching experience, there's a Clyde Drexler or Isaiah Thomas who floundered. The track record of doing something like this is not great or even good. Again, everybody acknowledges as much."

Money was the issue. This season under Tubby, season ticket sales had dropped to 4100, and the program which had traditionally been a money maker lost $4.7 million in ticket sales. Tubby's buyout is $9.6 million over 6 years--$1.6 million per yr for 6 yrs. Penny's contract is $1.5 million a year. So, the total outlay per year is now $3.1 million, the same amount Tubby alone was paid per year. At least for the first three years it's a break even on salary with a good probability of recouping the $4.7 million in ticket sales on a yearly basis.

No one knows whether it will work out, and it's risky, but the hard financial data which reflects the lack of support for whatever Tubby was doing shows that the current direction was untenable.

I do find it interesting that in an age where coached are being arrested on federal charges because they were too close to shoe companies, Memphis is saying "Hey Nike, you looking hot. Come get in this bed with me."

Coaches are being arrested for being intermediaries in payments from shoe companies to players. Do you have any evidence that Penny is doing that, or that Penny was hired because of his connections with Nike?

No of course not. But because of this FBI probe, changes are coming regarding shoe companies and AAU relationships to college basketball. Just funny that as the industry moves away, Memphis is getting closer to a shoe company with an inexperienced coach when it comes to compliance and NCAA rules.
