Looks like they plan to use Liberty Arena for home games expecting less than 4000 people and Vines for bigger games. Men and women's basketball plus volleyball will use the new arena. The new arena would be able to add another 500 seats to the floor if needed.

RE: New Basketball Arena
Just saw the news. I have a question for those who know LU basketball. My only concern is how this impacts the possibility of moving to a better conference. Does this new area help LU move to a better conference given the fact that it is smaller at 4000? I would think a 10k arena would look better for moving up.

The Vines Center will still be there if needed. That’s almost 10k but I think moving forward a smaller packed arena is more desirable than a 60% full Vines.

So basically every home game? Just joking... Kind of.

I think a conference wants to see a full arena because that looks best on television. Not many (if any) schools have two arenas to play games so I think it would be a positive no matter. The Big South doesn't bring the crowds so we need to foster our own game day attendance which takes time. We can't rely on others bringing a crowd to boost attendance in any sport if we want to be attractive to another conference.

RE: New Basketball Arena
For perspective:

A10 we would be bigger than four schools with max capacity of 4500

Big East smallest is Villanova at 6500

The American we would be second smallest (Tulane 3600)

CAA we would be third smallest

RE: New Basketball Arena
Not only is Vines Center still available but as JLFJR noted on ASOR it can be expanded if needed.

Attendance is falling at colleges across the nation and smaller venues are now becoming more en vogue. It should create a much better atmosphere.

Would love to see LU succeed moving to another conference! I spent a year there before transferring. Loved it and still follow yall from time to time.
I think basketball is easier to build up and get the LU name out there. Best of luck!

Official NCAA numbers: http://www.ncaa.org/championships/statis...attendance

2017 was 2,068
2016 was 2,515
2015 was 1,784
2014 was 2,482

If you take away the tournament games it would have been an average home attendance 2207. That’s pretty decent imo. The home schedule was terrible.

If we could get between 3,000-4,000 it would be outstanding and a good place for the program to be in.

RE: New Basketball Arena
All colleges including the high profile majors are seeing substantial drops in attendance the past few years. Having a 15k arena was a sign of showing you were big time back in the day. With rae exceptions, it generally means you have a dead environment today.

Per the 2017 numbers, this is what some conferences averaged:

5. Big East - 10,014
8. AAC - 5,744
10. Atlantic 10 - 4,731
12. Conference USA - 3,609
14. MAC - 2,885
16. CAA - 2,455
18. Southern - 2,357
20. Sun Belt - 2,128
27. A-Sun - 1,699
29. Big South - 1,417

Liberty had 2,058 in 2017. If we want to upgrade our conference, we need to upgrade another conference's profile. Getting to 3,000 should be a minimum, with the eventual target up to 5,000 to really open some eyes in my opinion.

RE: New Basketball Arena
In order for Liberty to avg. in the 5,000 range.....
1) Must win at least 20 games a year.
2) Must regularly win conference titles.
3) Must make the NCAA tournament and win a game occassionally.
4) Must schedule some high profile home games, and win a majority of them.
5) Get some national ESPN games so people see who we are.
*6) Get students to the games!!!

Winning cures many things.

I would move high profile games to number two. Could you imagine if we hosted someone like Duke? Obviously that is dreaming but if you have a big game on the schedule that will help the attendance a lot.

Ah. These weren’t in any kind of order by priority. But, yes, you are right.

I wonder what our basketball attendance breakdown is.....
% - Student Body
% - Faculty/University Employees
% - Community Fans
% - Team Member Family
% - Visiting Team Fans
% - Band/Cheerleaders/Ushers/Stadium Workers

My guess would be

10% student body
25% alumni
10% University employees
20% community fans
5% team family
10% visiting fans
20% band/cheerleaders/ushers/stadium workers

I'd say 60-75% of the attendees are students. Our attendance would greatly suck if not for the kids. This is probably the case for the vast majority of Big South and low-mid major schools. I've never understood the scheduling rationale of the Big South and NCAA. The dates and start times sometimes makes no sense to me.

That said, winning naturally will cure our attendance woes, but also improving our non-conference schedule will help as well. Nobody gets excited for glorified scrimmages against Clarks Summit and LCA. Basketball should adopt a similar philosophoy that football had, and only schedule D1 opponents. This will help with both attendance and player performance. but if we have to schedule cupcakes, at least schedule some local D2 and D3 schools, like Lynchburg and Hampden Sydney- schools that the locals have heard of and might have a little bit of interest and may actually bring a few people vs. the 0 that comes from KY Christian. Just my 2 cents.
