2018 Women's NIT
The teams have been chosen and now we're waiting for the brackets to come out.

As expected, JMU and Delaware will join Drexel in the field.

Locally, St. Joe's and Penn got in.

I'm predicting that Drexel will play Penn in the first round, since they didn't play in the RS.

Other teams Drexel could possibly play based on geography are Albany, Fordham, Navy, Rutgers, Harvard, George Mason, Georgetown, Bethune-Cookman. Hopefully Drexel gets matched up with a mid-major in the first round, and not a team like Rutgers or Georgetown.

Drexel got matched up with Robert Morris. Interestingly, Drexel got put in the quadrant with a lot of the southeastern teams. Penn, JMU, Delaware, St Joe's, Bucknell, et al are all in a separate quadrant.

The first two rounds are going to be winnable, especially if the potential second round is at home. After that it's just one game at a time. JMU drew Penn State in the second round, so we got a little bit lucky there.

RE: 2018 Women's NIT
Drexel got a very winnable first round match up with RMU. That's of course assuming that they can right the ship with their shooting slump. Of course, if they continue to shoot the ball like they did last weekend, then all bets are off. Difference being that Elon and Delaware know Drexel well and had a tough defensive game plan to stop them. We'll see if a top team from a very low level conference can step it up defensively enough to stop Drexel at the DAC.

JMU got a tough draw for sure. Interesting the paired up Delaware and Georgetown after the Georgetown coach left to become the coach at Delaware. I think we win the first, which is at home. Fordham will be a tough game to win. If we win that one we are looking at a rematch against Kenny Brooks and Virginia Tech. I just do not see a deep run here this year. However we need to take 1 game at a time.

Harvard is tough too and there's no guarantee that Fordham wins that game.

There's a couple of factors that will weigh into how far they go...
1. Can the offense adjust to playing without Woods?
2. Will they get their shooting touch back? Was their atrocious shooting last weekend just a combination of fatigue and facing 2 really tough defenses that know Drexel well.
3. Can they recover from the letdown of missing the NCAAT? After all that went down last weekend, do they still have it in them to make another tournament run.
4. Matchups and home courts. If Drexel can get by RMU, will they get their next game at home or not?

Hopefully we get good support tonight in our opening round. JMU won last night and will face Radford (who beat Penn State in OT)

RE: 2018 Women's NIT
So tonight is game night and a game that Drexel should be able to win, even without Sara. I guess it depends if the Dragons are able to put the disappointment of last weekend’s loss behind them and try to seize this new opportunity.

They have a very international roster with just 5 of 12 players from the US. The team has 3 Canadians, 1 from Japan, 1 from Spain, 1 from Finland, and 1 from England.

The Colonials finished 24-7 and 16-2 in the NEC. They lost to Saint Francis in the championship game. While their record is decent and about the same as Drexel’s, SOS really sets the two teams apart.

Drexel comes into the game with an RPI of 49. RMU’s is 131.
Drexel hasn’t lost to a bad team all season and was undefeated against >100 opponents. Meanwhile, RMU played just one game against a team with an RPI better than 100. That was Michigan State in their opener. MSU’s RPI is 64 and the Colonial’s lost to them by 42 points. They are just 3-4 against teams with winning records this year.

Their roster has some height. They do have the height advantage over Drexel, but then again, just about ever one of Drexel’s opponents do, so that doesn’t really matter.

RE: 2018 Women's NIT
I was reading Robert Morris’s game notes and came across this interesting tidbit. Their SID has a sense of humor.

“Robert Morris has never lost a game in which they lead at the end of the 2nd half. In such situations, the Colonials are 25-0 this season. All time, RMU is 598-0 when leading after the final whistle”.

RE: 2018 Women's NIT
Dragons get their 9th postseason win in team history tonight with an ugly 57-44 win over Robert Morris. The outcome was never in doubt. Drexel led 44-20 with about 5 minutes left in the 3rd, and then they seem to have gotten bored. The had to play through foul after foul after foul in the final 15 minutes. I had said before the game that if Drexel could shoot 40% against this team, they would win easily. Well they only shot 33% for the game, but they made enough 3 pointers to win convincingly.

Drexel gets ANOTHER home game on Sunday. They'll host Fordham at 4:00. Our administration gets criticized a lot for not caring much about winning. But that's obviously not their attitude toward their women's basketball team. Drexel appears to be willing to put up the money as much as possible in for the WNIT. Sunday will be Drexel's 8th straight WNIT home game. Of the 16 WNIT games through this coming Sunday, 12 are/were at the DAC.

RE: 2018 Women's NIT
And in other WNIT games tonight...
Georgetown defeated Delaware
Penn beat Albany down the street
And in a game that could affect Drexel's run in the NIT...Virginia Tech narrowly escaped Navy by 1 point. If Drexel wins on Sunday, their next opponent would now be the winner of George Mason/Virginia Tech.

Nice win for sure. Definitely wasn't ever in doubt.

How was attendance? Did we build off of the caa championship game at all or did it go back to normal?

It was pretty empty, attendance on the box score was only 479, but it is a Friday night with very little notice of the game. However, there was a nice turnout in the student section, and I think that's what's most important. I do think that from a student perspective there was some build off of the CAAT. Hopefully they can add on that even more on Sunday. Last year, I remember a really nice crowd for the Sunday game WNIT game against Villanova.

I think this team is really exhausted and playing on fumes right now. It doesn't help that they're missing Sara either. The RMU team they played tonight was pretty bad, despite their record, and you could really see the difference in talent level between the CAA and the NEC. Fordham is a winnable game but the A-10 had their tournament a week before, and they might be the more rested team. I've noticed that the A-10 has done very well in the WNIT thus far and having that extra week of rest could be a reason.

I think it’s closer to $5,000. I’m sure that they lose money on these games, but I guess they consider it more of a loss leader to get better recruits. It also could be a condition of DD’s contract. While I still wish they can one day get over the hump and into the NCAA’s, I know that they’re are a lot of mid-major programs that can only dream of getting to the WNIT year after year. Drexel recognizes this and awards them for their success.

They deserve home games for their accomplishments. Who cares if they are at a loss. We need to build up support for them instead of saying to stop spending money intelligently

Not sure if this is true for Drexel or not, but in the Harrisonburg paper the JMU admin said that we lose money by hosting, but we'd lose more by having to send the team on the road(hotel, bus, food, etc.)

RE: 2018 Women's NIT
It's Game Day once again and another home game for the Dragons. Drexel hasn't had an overnight road trip since way back on 2/11 when they had a weekend trip to Elon and UNCW. This is also their 6th straight home game.

Their next WNIT opponent is Fordham. The Rams finished in 3rd in an Atlantic 10 that send 7 teams to the postseason. 2 to the NCAA's and 5 to the NIT. Even though the CAA was ranked 1 spot higher than the A-10 in the RPI, the A-10 still gets the benefit of the doubt based on reputation.

The 23-9 Rams have an RPI of 80, vs. Drexel's 47. They are very similar teams, and appear to be evenly matched. Great defense, but not much scoring. Fordham scores just 61 ppg while giving up 55 and shoots under 40% as a team. Drexel scores 63.5 ppg and also gives up 55. Common opponents are SJU, LaSalle, Penn State, and Bucknell. Both teams beat LaSalle, and Bucknell, and lost to Penn State. But Drexel Beat SJU, while Fordham lost to them twice in the last week of the season.

But unlike Drexel, who uses a lot of players and has a balanced attack, Fordham has 3 players who barely ever leave the court. Davis, Cavenaugh & Holden all AVERAGE over 36.9 minutes per game, and those players score 73% of their points. G'mrice Davice is a 6'2" Sr from Philadelphia who will give Drexel fits. She averages 16.8 points and 13.7 rebounds per game. They have another local player, Kristen Ryan from Malvern, but she doesn't play very much. So with 2 local players, expect a lot of Fordham fans in the seats this afternoon.

Should be an exciting one. If Drexel can shoot over 40% and contain Davis, expect a Drexel win. But as I mentioned before, this is a very tired Drexel team, and shooting, and even making layups has been a problem over the last couple of game.

RE: 2018 Women's NIT
nice year for us. they said we had 4 sophomore and a freshman on the floor at the end. if we step out on their big scorer maybe we win. then again she could've driven right by or hit a contested three anyway.

i liked that brown and greenberg were aggressive about getting to the rim. they will need to develop a marginean kind of game to take the next step. find ways to get to the foul line...and make them. hopefully they work on free throws so they have confidence to score from the line. it cost us in the caa championship that they kept settling for jump shots.

nihill is tough. brown/greenberg need to follow that example.
