If you look at rules for the NCAA, up until 2014 the NCAA was allowed to say whether or not classes met the standards to keep student athletes eligible. That rule changed in 2014 allowing the schools to decide if the classes were legitimate or not. 2014 is also the year the NCAA started investigating UNC.

THIS is not tin-foilish if true. I some how missed this until now. Links on where I can read about this a bit more?

Is tin-foilish the correct spelling or tin-foil-ish or tinfoil-ish?

I'll have to get you the links later. My dad was looking this stuff up the other day and I can't remember what the exact links were. We started looking it up after seeing Florida State had to vacate wins and lost scholarships for having a fake class back in 2011. Essentially doing exactly what UNC did but on a smaller scale.

This isn't the link to the rule change. This is some information about the Florida State scandal that took place in 2007 (I don't know why I was thinking 2011). Maybe I'm missing something but this sounds very similar to the UNC situation the only difference I see is the punishment (or lack thereof).

As a person with a deep appreciation for my perm, I wish you would leave tinfoil hats out of this.

As long as the ACC use ACC refs I don't want to be anywhere near that conference. I've seen better officiating by high school refs.

The head of referees in the ACC, John Clougherty, was hired by John Swofford, the ACC commissioner and former UNC AD, after being recommended to him by Dean Smith. Let that sink in...

Back in the 60's, the UNC head coach, Frank McGuire, was fired by the university for his involvement in a point shaving scandal and recruiting violations. However, the university allowed for him to chose his successor...his assistant, Dean Smith.

Internal investigation into the AFAM department found that the enrollment in the alleged fake classes in which no participation by the student was required, sometimes phantom professors taught classes, and grades were given based on grades needed to remain eligible, went back 30 years to when Dean was coach and Swofford was AD.

It should also be mentioned that Dean came from Kansas, Roy coached under Dean at UNC before going to Kansas, then coming back to UNC. Have you heard of Devonte Graham? He was committed to App when Capel was coach, but then decommited and was going to transfer to NC State, UNC's rival(Joel Berry would disagree). Capel, a former UNC player, accused NC State of tampering, which may or may not be true, however, release to NC State was not granted and where did Devonte Graham end up? Kansas.

I hate to be one that comes to the defense of UNC-CHeat but some of these connections are coming across a bit "tin-foil hat"-ish.

When you say 30 years for the academic scandal do you mean 30 years from 2018 or 30 years that it was happening. I thought this started a bit later than you are suggesting, though I may have my timeline wrong. Either way it was happening for far too long.

LOL, dude, stay off the ncstate message boards. Those guys come up with the stupidest BS trying to explain why UNC has whooped their tails for over 50 years now. They have created this FAKE illusion that Carolina has cheated since the 50s and stuff. There is zero, AND I MEAN ZERO proof that Dean Smith had anything to do with what went on in the AFAM department at UNC. Sure, anyone can speculate and ASSUME that he was in on it, but anyone that takes it as fact is a delusional hater grasping at straws trying to reason why their team is inferior. It's super sad how it drives them to an emotional mess over something so insignificant to their personal lives.

http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/...171013.pdf

“Given UNC’s admissions, the panel had to consider whether either academic fraud or extra benefit violations occurred. A singular principle allowed UNC room to make its claims and, Ultimately, limits the panel’s ability to conclude that academic fraud occurred. Since 2014, the NCAA membership has acknowledged the question whether academic fraud occurred is one appropriately answered by institutions based on their own academic policies. The membership trusts academic entities to hold themselves accountable and report academic fraud to the NCAA and has chosen to constrain who decides what constitutes academic fraud. Because of this limitation, UNC’s decision to support the courses as legitimate combined with a stale and incomplete record that does not allow the panel to drill down to the course and assignment level—even if the panel had wanted to second guess the courses—it cannot conclude academic fraud occurred.”

“June 30, 2014: UNC announces the NCAA has reopened its investigation. The NCAA later says in a statement that “additional people with information and others who were previously uncooperative might be willing to speak with the enforcement staff.” Also that day, Mary Willingham files a lawsuit against UNC, claiming a hostile work environment caused her to leave the university.”

I didn't say Dean had anything to do with it, you came up with that accusation on your own. Everything I posted was factual information. He was in fact the coach when the AFAM scandal began, but it was not stated that he was knowledgeable about his players being involved. You can chose to make your own deductions from the information provided. Claiming fake news when facts are provided that don't support your agenda and getting upset about those facts is a reaction of denial.

An over zealous prosecutor, a stupid party, many stupid actions, and a whole host of stupid people. That prosecutor was disbarred and ultimately convicted of contempt for withholding evidence. Definatly not a duke fan but the school and athletics were never at fault for that one.

The 30 for 30 was very interesting, and eye opening. The media definitely painted a much different picture at the time. It seems that it was a witch hunt drummed up by the prosecutor that was up for election. He withheld evidence that would have gotten the case thrown almost immediately. He was banking on the media hype pressuring the jury into a guilty verdict.
