Far-flung conference costs UMKC's athletic department some red ink
Quote:The University of Missouri-Kansas City's affiliation with the Western Athletic Conference is beginning to take its toll.

According to KCUR, the university joined the WAC in 2013 primarily to give its men's basketball team a better shot at landing an automatic bid in the NCAA tournament. However, the team has managed only one winning season since joining the conference.

The team also has struggled to attract fans. Despite Municipal Auditorium's ability to seat almost 10,000, the Kangaroos couldn't attract more than 2,000 fans for a single game this season.

On top of all that, the WAC requires UMKC's athletic teams to travel extensively, which adds to the athletic department's expenses.

KCUR reports that UMKC's athletic department was in the red during the most recent school year. It spent $15.9 million on operating expenses while bringing in only $14.8 million in revenue. State budget challenges resulted in the athletic budget getting cut by $1.5 million this school year.

"When you have a crisis like this and chaos, it does make you shake it all up and figure out what's really important," UMKC Athletics Director Carla Wilson told the radio station.

With the arrival of a new chancellor this year, UMKC may need to make a new case for the WAC. Mauli Agrawal will begin his tenure as chancellor on June 20.

What a bunch of whiners. Crisis and Chaos? Try being the Athletic Director at Chicago State. UMKC athletic budget is $15 million. Chicago State is $5.1 million. Travel is not the issue for UMKC. Performance is the issue.

UMKC has never been to the NCAA tournament in men's or women's basketball. They have not been competitive in men's basketball in the WAC. In men's soccer, they are 25-52-13 over the past five seasons. They don't field a baseball team.

So what does travel have to do with this? These are the per game attendance numbers for UMKC over the past seven years:

2011- 1,327
2012- 1,308
2013- 1,235
2014- 1,677
2015- 1,597
2016- 1,528
2017- 1,334

2014-2017 was in the WAC. Their attendance number are terrible in both leagues. How did they think the WAC was easier? Did they think they could beat NMSU? They are 1-11 vs. New Mexico State in men's basketball. 3-7 vs GCU. 3-7 vs CSUB.

They need to stop blaming travel for their troubles, because things would not be any better in the Summit. They need to do a better job of hiring athletic leadership and a better job of managing their budgets.

Its more complicated than managing their budget. Missouri state government just thinks higher education wastes a lot of money. They did believe that the WAC would let UMKC host a tournament yet to happen.

There has also been bad luck like picking Martez over Deshawn Taylor. They thing about Western Schools is that they don't feed into a lot of other top programs. IF UMKC gets a nice player he is going to transfer to a better team. You don't see that with NMSU, CSUB, and GCU.

Utah Valley and UTRGV are also teams on the rise as well. I do not see any players going to Chicago State, Seattle or UMKC right now. California Baptist is also better with better players.

I have to say this. The days are number for UMKC of ever going be in the WAC if they produce lousy teams and spending too much money on sports.

I wouldn't put Seattle in the same group with UMKC and Chicago State. I wouldn't even put the Seattle program below UTRGV. Hayford is miles ahead of Hill and Robinson as a seasoned head coach. Have you even looked at what Seattle has coming in next season? Hayford has SMU transfer 6'5 Soph. DeShawn McDowell, Seton Hall transfer 6'9 Jr. Myles Carter, Hawaii transfer 6'0 Soph. Matt Owie, and American U. transfer 6'5 Jr. Delante Jones joining Mataj Kavas, Aaron Menzies, and Morgan Means next season. I expect Seattle to be even better next season.

I expect UMKC to finish 2nd or 3rd next year followed by 6th the following year. I will ignore projections that do not have this.

Perfectly said. They also have signed 3-star Trey Hopkins from Oklahoma City. Former Boise State commit also had offers from Nebraska and DePaul.

McDowell, Carter, and Jones all were 3-star recruits too. Jones was Freshman of the Year in the Patriot League and averaged 11+ ppg both of his years at AU. He shot 38% from 3 if I remember right as a career% and he will flourish in Hayford's long range offense.

Seattle U is way closer to NMSU and GCU in recruiting than the bottom of the league. Id put SU at 3rd right now in best future projections in the WAC, and right on the heels of NMSU/GCU. Next year will be big.

Big long shot, but local Marjan Beauchamp is a 4 star who publicly said on his Twitter he's still considering SU despite P6 offers. Would be a perfect fit in Hayford's offense.

RE: Far-flung conference costs UMKC's athletic department some red ink
Looking at PRWolfe's ratings. This is how the WAC stacks up which includes California Baptist and possible Tarleton State.

42.New Mexico State 25-5
97.Utah Valley 21-9
163.Grand Canyon 20-10
181.Seattle U. 19-12
227.UTRGV 15-16
236.CSU-Bakersfield 12-17
281.California Baptist 25-5
340.UMKC 10-21
386.Tarleton State 19-11
655.Chicago State 3-28

Seattle U., Grand Canyon, UTRGV, Utah valley and Tarleton State could battle for the 3rd spot in the future. California Baptist could be a threat in the future to win the WAC's men's basketball title.

So here would be the future WAC standing.

1.New Mexico State
1.California Baptist
3.Utah Valley
4.Grand Canyon
5.Seattle
6.Tarleton State
7.UTRGV
8.CSU-Bakersfield
9.UMKC
10.Chicago State

I was thinking Seattle would not get the players like the Huskies in the PAC 12. It would be hard for them to get those types of players.

One, inserting D2 schools into a D1 conference is an apple-to-orange comparison due to the method of calculating this rating.

Two, how is this relevant in a thread about the red ink at UMKC.

Talking about how the UMKC will never be able to compete in the WAC while California Baptist and Tarleton State would do better than them. The D2 schools would get better players than UMKC, Chicago State and maybe Seattle U. Plus, the D2 schools have beaten many D1 programs this basketball season which they can be compared to D1. There is no differences for the top D2 schools and middle of the pack D1 schools. It is relevant on how hard for UMKC and Chicago State to ever compete in the WAC like they are doing.

UMKC was 3 seed last year, 2015 2 seed and player of year. In odd years they finish high and compete. This year down to 6 scholarship players for half the conference and still finished 6th.

Not really having financial difficulties when you can spend $96 million on arts complex. All about what the new chancellor's financial priorities are.

RE: Far-flung conference costs UMKC's athletic department some red ink
I think Gonzaga and BYU may make UMKC's decision.

If Gonzaga joins the Mountain West, and the WCC takes a WAC school (presumably Seattle), the WAC can skirt by as long as it doesn't fall below seven active Division I members before July 1, 2020 (when CSU Bakersfield is scheduled to leave), and if Cal Baptist completes it transition by the time the WAC's grace period would expire on June 30, 2022 (which it is scheduled to do). This would be contingent on Chicago State surviving, and no one else leaving, which of course, are highly doubtful:

Chicago State, Kansas City, UTRGV, New Mexico State, Grand Canyon, Utah Valley, Cal Baptist, Division II upgrade TBD

New Mexico State and Chicago State don't have men's soccer programs, so presumably Houston Baptist and Incarnate Word stick around as affiliates.

Obviously if the WCC doesn't replace Gonzaga with a WAC school, this gives the WAC one out to play with come 2022. If Seattle, Chicago State, and UMKC leave, then the five remaining WAC schools need to convince three of the eleven Big Sky schools to move.

If BYU rejoins the Mountain West, this could be especially dicey for the WAC, as the WCC could take Seattle and Grand Canyon, and the Mountain West could take New Mexico State, who like BYU maintain FBS independence. At this point the WAC is down to the following:

Cal Baptist
Utah Valley
UTRGV
Kansas City
Chicago State

UTRGV and Kansas City are bailed out by the Southland and Summit, respectively. Chicago State and Cal Baptist leave Division I (maybe they luck out and join the Atlantic Sun and Big West). The Big Sky bails out Utah Valley.

Costly WAC membership puts a strain on UMKC’s budget

Quote:As budget cuts continue to plague UMKC, scrutiny is intensifying on the athletic program’s costly participation in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).

UMKC joined the WAC after leaving the Summit League in 2013. As a mid-level, Division I conference with an automatic NCAA postseason berth, the university hoped to capitalize on the financial success and exposure the WAC could provide.

UMKC has had some success in the conference (winning five team championships in the 2016-2017 season, for example), but its big-ticket sports program, men’s basketball, has struggled. While a trip to the NCAA men’s basketball tournament would be a definite revenue boost for the university, the Roos have finished with just one winning season since joining the WAC, finishing 18-17 last year.

KCUR reports that, according to NCAA records filed with the University of Missouri system, the UMKC athletic department’s total operating expenses for the 2016-2017 season were $15 million, exceeding its total revenues of $14.8 million. UMKC cut the budget of the department by $1.3 million this year due to the overall budget cuts UM schools are facing.

“Budget cuts to higher education are affecting universities all across the nation,” said former Sports Information Director Shelby Hild. “Fundraising and scheduling competition more regionally are two of many examples of things that can be done to help resolve issues going on.” Hild vacated the position midway through the men’s basketball season, leaving with the athletic department with no full-time director.

So far, the move to Division I has done little to boost the popularity of UMKC sports. The men’s basketball team plays at the 10,000-seat Municipal Auditorium, but averages about 1,500 fans per game. Unlike in the mid-2000s, the Roos now have no band or cheerleaders.

Compounding the department’s financial struggles are the heavy travel demands of the conference. The WAC is made up of an assortment of teams spread out across the western half of the country, leaving UMKC with few regional opponents. The closest conference team is Chicago University, over 500 miles away, and the Roos must travel to cities like Bakersfield, California and Seattle, Washington, to play opponents.

NCAA records further reveal how much UMKC must spend on travel. The men’s basketball team spent over $415,000 on flights, ground transportation, meals and lodging for the 2016-2017 season alone. This equates to about $30,000 a trip for the men’s team.

The amount of travel the WAC requires is already leading some of its teams to take action. CSU-Bakersfield announced in November it’s leaving for the Big West, a much more geographically unified conference.

“I think it’s a burden off the university in a sense, because now the travel costs won’t be as much as it’s been in this league,” Bakersfield’s men’s basketball coach Rod Barnes told KCUR when asked about the decision to leave the WAC.

More regional opponents, as well as a move to Division II athletics, would undoubtedly help alleviate financial stress. The median expenses for institutions without a football program supporting Division II athletics in 2011-2012 were $4 million. A Division III program would be even more affordable, with a median cost of $2 million without football sponsorship.

The WAC really needs to grow to 12 members to create two (east & west) regions; in order to reduce travel cost. This way a program like Chicago State wouldn't have to play Seattle more than once a year (and vice versa).

I agree. But the real problem for the leadership at UMKC is the Athletic Director, Carla Wilson. She graduated from UMKC in 1988 and has been an employee of the University ever since. She worked her way from an entry level university position to Director of Athletics. She had a degree in accounting and started as a Senior Accountant at UMKC.

She has done well at UMKC. But is she the right person to lead the Department going forward? The CSUB AD talked about how getting into the Big West was like fundraising:

Siegfried was considered a fund raising star at Memphis. UMKC clearly wants to be in the MVC. It does make sense from their standpoint. But the constant whining about travel in the WAC is not getting them there. They need everything to work better: fundraising, basketball, attendance. They have a nice market and good facility to play in. They need to make themselves attractive to the MVC.
