RE: Louis Rowe performance appraisal
Transferring is out of control. At some point a player is going to come out of a half time playing for the team he was playing against in the first half.

I am glad Lewis is back and I am sure nobody is more glad than Lou Rowe.

As much as a kid may love his coach, winning conference championships and making it to the big dance is pretty important too. Even a middle of the pack ACC and B1G teams have a shot at making the tourney and getting some wins.

Don't be surprised if someone like Lewis or Christmas is "staying" with a losing JMU program... until the right P5 team comes courting.

I don’t necessarily agree there have been plenty of defections from winning mid major programs. Sometimes the winning creates more attention and noise around the player. Of course coaching changes play a role as well and sometimes that happens when mid majors win but plenty of examples of coaches even staying at winning mid majors and kids still transferring up.

Saw this quote in the DNR regarding Lewis:

"Though it is a violation of NCAA rules to recruit current players before they put their name in the NCAA’s Transfer Portal, since the season ended, Lewis — a rising junior guard — has received interest from high-major programs, including some in the ACC and Big Ten, sources said."

So it begs the question...If his name is NOT in the transfer portal, who are the back channel people these P5 bag men are making contact with? It's almost as if the NCAA doesn't care (or more likely, incapable of enforcing)

Of course they don’t care because it’s a P5 school doing it. If JMU got caught then probably get the death penalty.

I’d be curious to see how much damage the death penalty inflicts on a 25 year old corpse.

At that point it's a mercy killing.

You said it, Incapable of enforcing.
It is no different for high school recruits. 3rd parties, runners, bag men, have huge influence on players. And they have had huge influence on players for a long time. I’ve laughed at recruiting “dead periods” for many years and the re-recruiting of current college players on other teams is no different. You can’t police communication and virtual relationships in the internet age. The toothpaste is out of the tube and it won’t go back in.

I’ve said before this player retention is a science as well/ if I was involved with a program I would keep close watch over my players credit hours and not make it easy for them to graduate early and use that loophole. It’s the downside of the 4 year transfer in your program- they have an extra year to accrue credits toward graduating. Mosely apparently could have transferred prior to last year but he elected to stay at JMU. I like the way Rowe is building via 4 year high school recruits. Jmu seems to be on guys and then once they go post grad or juco they are off them. I’m not sure if it’s all intentional or being driven by academics or just that the right 4 year high school guys while they take more time to develop are kids that may be less likely to transfer and are more likely to stick together and buy into the culture that you are building. These aren’t fantasy basketball rosters the way some programs and players treat them to be. It take time to do it the right way.

Seriously? If players want to complete their degree earlier and then move on as a grad transfer you would go out of you way to try to prevent that? They are here for an education first and foremost. If they finish all the required coursework for a major than good for them, they now have a degree from JMU and can move on in life. JMU is not like Alabama in football or UNC in basketball where players are only using it as a means to get to the pros

I wouldn’t prevent it I’m just saying that I would be mindful of it and I bet Jmu is. I think it comes more into play when a player Red shirts. Take Drexel for example when they took isabell from Missouri maybe you don’t take him as a transfer if it’s apparent he’s on track to graduate after his red shirt and only one season on the floor with them. Scholarships are valuable and you plan your roster around some of these guys only to be used as a stepping stone.

That DNR article is mentioned in the Madia podcast from yesterday and the hoops beat writer says essentially that Lewis, in conferring with his family and the coaching staff, has opted to stay at JMU, at least for the time being. In any event, it's a blatant form of corruption that this sort of thing can even take place and it's unusual for this sort of thing to be reported on publicly.

New info released today on Sean Miller at Arizona paying for a recruit, ala LSU. LSU, stunningly, reinstated Will Wade.

Wouldn't he need to earn a bachelor's degree prior to the end of his athletic eligibility to go on to compete as graduate students for another school? Is he on pace to graduate a year early? (Maybe I misunderstood your post.)

You are correct, but a lot of athletes do graduate early, especially if they entered with some college credits. A high percentage of student athletes stay in Harrisonburg thru the summer each year while working out/training. By doing so they also take classes in May session and Summer session each year. By doing so a lot of athletes can complete their degree programs in 3 years (if they had credits coming into college).

Is Lewis doing that? Just curious

Don't know his (Lewis) exact credit situation but that is not an uncommon thing for student athletes......if you are there working out/training may as well take a class or two as well. Just makes sense to stay busy and limit idle time --- when bad things tend to happen to 18-22 year-olds.

Not only that, it helps offset the fact some athletes take a smaller course load during the season. You might only have 12 credits in the Fall, but taking the extra 1.5 or 3 credits over the summer helps keep you on track for 4 year graduation or, like some have said, graduate early so you can grad transfer.
