No, there was no offset clause in his contract. He gets the full thing + whatever High Point is paying him. It was another terrible contract following Pastner's unbelievable bad contract.

the contract was not terrible---
Hiring Tubby Smith was TERRIBLE -- it was a disaster from the beginning -- classic groupthink.

you could quibble about the offset but the guarantee and the amount was what it took to get a sitting coach, that was wanted by his previous school, to change jobs. We payed the market rate and terms --- the problem was hiring Tubby Smith.

It was NOT the market rate. It was two idiots at an auction who are trying to outdo the other and end up paying a lot more for the item than the market value. It happens all the time at auctions. You get stuck in the I am going to win mentality and keep bidding even when you could go out and get something better, cheaper.

No other school would come close to paying what we did for the Tub. As you also see when we fired him. No other school in the country stepped up to pay what we overpaid, because his market value is about 1/3rd of what we paid.

1- texas Tech offered him about the same money.

2- Name another coach that moved from a top 7 league for less? (one that they previous school wanted)

3- Could they have hired Tubby for less? (Ill give you a hint ---no)

None of those points makes the Tub worth 3mil a year. We got into a "peeing" contest with Texas Tech, doesn't make the Tub worth 3mil a year. We were both stupid to continue to upbid each other. No other school in the country would have come close to paying that amount because......... it was vastly over his market value.

It's only a bad contract if the guy footing the bill is worried about it, and I've seen no indication that Laurie is worried about it.

There is no shaking it, it was a terrible contract.

But...but....that’s not Bowen’s fault. He has plausible deniability for every poor decision made over the last few years. Except Mike Norvell, that was all him.

03-lmfao

This hyperbolic position makes sense if Bowen's supporters assert he is flawless, which I have not seen any of them assert. Maybe they have, and I just haven't come across it.

I’m willing to give him some credit for Norvell, but some aren’t willing to say that he’s been an absolute disaster when it comes to basketball.

Penny landed three players in less than a month that Tubby and staff recruited but couldn't land in two years.

Tubby Smith was the same as he ever was. The big mistake was hiring, and I appreciate the willingness to suck it up and fix the problem instead of letting it play out and become even worse by 2021.

I'm just grateful that Sam Walton (may he rest in peace) was smart enough to build a retail empire so successful that the husband of one of his daughters could afford to pay off a $10 million hiring screw-up which ultimately resulted in the hiring of perhaps one of the most exciting coaches to ever grace our basketball program. 04-cheers

Bought a Tigers baseball style cap at Walmart this past weekend.

The one on Germantown Parkway next to the Super Target.

Looked cool.

When I finally put it on my head, it felt too small.

Looked in the mirror and it looked too small.

Gave it to my son.

Where do you get a like a big head Tigers baseball style cap?

Why on earth would you ever elect to shop at Walmart when Target is just across the same side street?

I don't know why so many posters on MTO keep complaining about the money paid to Tubby.

Unless the money is coming out of your personal wallet then who cares?

Boosters who sponsor high level college buyouts have plenty of money. Otherwise they wouldn't do it.

Time to let it go.

I am not concerned with a millionaire booster's bank account. What I am truly upset about is that someone, in the position and with the reputation that Mr. Smith has, would accept a position coaching the University of Memphis and treat it as if it was a part time gig at Burger King.

It was obvious to me early on, and hopefully to most now, that Tubby had no intention of doing the job he was being paid to do. That he took us for a ride and is no better than a petty thief except for the fact the salary my University paid him was in the millions, not to mention his "assistants". They represented me and my team.

Also, season tickets aren't free and neither is my time, and to torture me with those 2 years trying to remain positive about my team takes money out of my pocket and time better spent away from me. So it does have something to do with my wallet.

IMHO, the people who are still taking up for poor little Tubby and wish he was still here are, well, anyway.

I think it's time to let your love of Tubby go, he sure didn't reciprocate in any way.

Harsh words but I agree. I find it hard to believe that anyone who has coached as long as Tubby would come here having no idea what the job entailed and how much it meant to this community.

That said, I also think it's time to let it go. It's a brand new day in Memphis!!!
