RE: AP: Sun Belt signs 8-year deal w/ ESPN; more revenue
So, I cut the cord several years ago, but I use Sling to get ESPN and a handful of other channels (unfortunately not ESPNU so I have to go to a restaurant or a friend's when App is on that channel). I suppose I will have to pay $5/month extra to get the SBC games not on TV now? I am getting ESPN, just not through traditional cable.

Can someone clarify?

Yeah.

ESPN is telling you to bend over, pull down your pants, and keep your mouth shut.

Smile and do it sheep. You LOVE it don't you sheep?

Yes if you get ESPN through SlingTV you will still be able to live stream all the ESPN channels that you pay for, but you will have to subscribe to ESPN+ to get all the content that isn't broadcasted on an ESPN channel.

An easier way to think about it is ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPNnews and so on are all tv channels. The app WatchESPN allows you to stream all of those channels live with a cable subscription. The app also has ESPN3 which has content that they don't put on the tv channels. Soon ESPN3 will become ESPN+ and you'll have to pay an extra subscription to view that content.

If you don't wanna pay five damn dollars then don't pay it. But don't ridicule those who will.

This is an awful lot of content. And, it's not just going to be the Sun Belt.

If all you are is a fan of a school, not a sport or not sports in general, that's fine.

If you are upset because it's gonna cost five bucks for something you used to get for free, well, welcome to 2018. You have to pay for online content. It's happened with Newspapers and now ESPN+. There's more on the horizon.

I can ridicule anything. How do you think it came to this? Do not ridicule? Are you kidding me? It is because of people who just rush out and pay for **** like this that we are in the time of 1,000 different pay to watch streaming services.

This is why micro-transactions are a thing FFS. Think about it for five seconds. Do not ridicule?

This is why so many people are cutting the chord and many more people will in the future. Why pay for a cable package of 1000 channels when you only watch probably 15 of them? I haven't paid for cable in a few years.

More people will eventually cut out cable packages and just start subscribing to the individual networks of the things they like. If you're someone like me who doesn't watch a lot of different channels on tv, you could end up saving money.

Here is the thing I am still trying to figure out. It sounds like people will still get access to in-market pro teams per regional channel. It would seem they would want to do the same for Regional College Sports teams and have to pay for Out of Market games.

You have a lot of rage. Offering access to 500 sbc events per year via broadcast and streaming services costs money, ESPN is paying the SBC and providing its members with broadcasting equipment as well. $5/ month for all access to every championship game and every home game for every conference member in HD, not to mention all the other content is a steal in my opinion. If you think it’s not worth it, fine. Don’t pay. I’m more upset that I have to pay for cable channels I don’t watch then $5 a month for something I do. To each his own. I guess you can listen to Troy’s football games on the radio.

Yep, and I'll go further.

One day all of you cord cutters will be paying the same amount of money y'all were paying a few years ago for a lot more content through a cable/sat.

I just hope there is still an alternate route than the internet to watch stuff.

To me, the internet is, at best, a necessary evil. I pray it does not become the only option. I might check out at that point.

Yeah, those 1,000 are not all going to survive. The slices are way too thin.

The libertarian version is where you subscribe to one or two major services and are then able to select SEC or SBC or MAC or NASCAR or History Channel and just pay for those slices with one subscription and one app.

I could see where G5 schools could sell the tv access as part of the season ticket package and get part of that sales commission.

In that format you might actually see the providers doing targeted marketing. Oh, you are signing in from central Arkansas...would you like to see the UALR/A-State basketball game tomorrow night?

Welcome to the forum.

The only option I use to have is to listen to the games on the radio and I enjoyed it.

Also, if you are not okay with paying for a cable package, (in part paying for ESPN already), then why are you okay paying MORE on top of it? They are screwing you and you are more than happy to let them.

My smart tv is connected to the internet. It is essentially a big iPad. I use my remote control and the ESPN app shows me the game just like regular tv.

It is no hassle at all.

Are you watching on a PC or something? Not sure why you feel its a bad option.

Because I don’t pay for ESPN. I’ve been streaming my content for quite a while. I pay for what I want.

I see it as a great deal. As someone who has subscribed to my school's streaming network, this is cheaper and gives me access to all Sun Belt schools for all sports.

This is where things are headed like it or not.

That aside, I'm glad that our transition to the new world is with ESPN instead of Joe's Internet Sports Channel or Zeeb.tv.ru or some such.

I agree. I already watch SBC schools play on ESPN3 and now I will get more and more content. If you won't pay $5 a month to be a fan of your school, then your school probably won't miss you as a fan if you fall in a crack. As far as "growing" a fan base and exposure, the best way to do that is to have easily accessible sports and content to your local fans and alumni. If they can't get access to their school's teams, then they will start supporting another school.

Ain’t nobody watching ESPN3 for free.
Most people are paying at least $60 a month usually with a year or two year contract of which $7.50 is ESPN products.

On value---Benson says in the below interview---

"You know we are always comparing ourselves to our peer conferences whether its competitively or whether in this case its kinda the market value--We think that puts us right up there with our peers...We think this ESPN extension.....is a signal that ESPN values the Sunbelt"

Benson also said that ESPN the deal would require the schools to gear up in order to provide upgraded production facilities. He said ESPN is helping to fund the production facility build out on each SB campus and by 2020 these facilities will be fully operational. The facilities will not only allow the production of live events, but will allow students at these schools to get hands on experience in producing live events.

http://sunbelt.me/2FHVkcE

To me, it sounds very similar to the MAC deal (just ESPN-Plus rather than ESPN3). Makes me wonder if it might actually approach that pay level. The MAC tops out at about $800K a school. Its funny, because the language Benson uses is almost EXACTLY the same language the MAC commissioner used to describe the media rights value when he introduced the renegotiated MAC deal a few years ago.

Hey, that's easy for us. AState already took care of getting everything up to ESPN Streaming caliber a couple years ago.

What this will do is at least put us in a situation where all the basketball games will have video available somewhere. Right now I think only AState and Georgia State provide video of most home games.

USA streams men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, and volleyball. It's a very good HD stream and ESPN3 quality, just not on ESPN3.

Yes, but do you have the fiber optics necessary to hit ESPN3 broadcast standard. Every school will be required to pay to upgrade to those standards if they are not there.

Schools who are already at that standard, get extra money it pocket early. Those that have to upgrade will see a delayed increase in value.

Which schools have the HD equipments already?

Just judging by teams that show home basketball games on ESPN3, those schools are:

Georgia State
South Alabama
Troy
Georgia Southern
App State
Louisiana

There's a difference between having Live streaming capabilities, and having ESPN Standard Live streaming capabilities.

As of right now, these are the schools that I know meet ESPN's standards.

Arkansas State
Georgia State
App State
Troy
Georgia Southern

UTA, USA, and ULL are question marks because they have never put their products on ESPN3. My guess is that UTA is good.

I paid 25$ for my sling. Included ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN3. You're right though, not free, but I'll have to pay an extra $5 (unless it gets included in sling), which I will gladly pay.

I killed cable after my 165 a month bills. Much cheaper to go alacart with sling / netflix.
