with the ESPN+ platform.... if you pay the 4.99, will you also be able to watch your main ESPN channels as well?

No the $4.99 is just for the plus content I’m pretty sure. I think it’ll work like this: you buy a cable package that includes WatchESPN so you can stream ESPN, 2, U, News, etc live. Then, you can opt to pay an extra $4.99 to access all the content that used to be on ESPN3.

Does anyone know if you can opt to JUST pay the $4.99 for the ESPN+ content WITHOUT a cable subscription?

It is my understanding that yes you can, but maybe someone else who knows more can verify.

Yes ESPN + will be a stand alone service kinda like Netflix for sports.

Does anybody more familiar with these things know when we might hear details about how much this deal is worth?

I have asked and looked. The only information I can find is $4.99 per month. There is nothing that states this will be $4.99 per month for a yearly subscription or more if you want to go month to month. I suspect it will start out at $4.99 per month until they reach a number of subscribers that triggers a rate increase, much like Netflix did recently. For now, we wait and see. Like everyone else I also want to know what this means in revenue to the schools.

Yes, but do you have the fiber optics necessary to hit ESPN3 broadcast standard. Every school will be required to pay to upgrade to those standards if they are not there.

Schools who are already at that standard, get extra money it pocket early. Those that have to upgrade will see a delayed increase in value.

Which schools have the HD equipments already?

Just judging by teams that show home basketball games on ESPN3, those schools are:

Georgia State
South Alabama
Troy
Georgia Southern
App State
Louisiana

UTA... I know we don’t have football, but you specifically said basketball.

I thought Arkansas State did, too.

Arkansas State not only produced virtually all conference home games, AState's production group was contracted to do the Sun Belt soccer tournament and provided part of the production of the Liberty Bowl. AState is ready to roll.

The way it reads is yes.

You however will not have access to ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU broadcasts without a cable subscription.

I'm sure you'll find out soon when someone asks the AD of a school about how much more that they are getting.

I suspect it's just a little increase (monetary wise..not percentage) as if it was anything significant, it would have been reported.

Probably wouldn't be surprised it is around the 250k/school mark, since ESPN is also helping for the broadcast upgrades for the schools in the conference.

Either way, having a long term deal is good for you guys knowing who is going to carry your games for the next 8 years.

Okay, that's what I'm thinking about doing and just making other arrangements for ESPN/2/U games. Thanks everyone.

Benson said that this deal will put us more in line with the other conferences on our level. I'm hoping that means we're getting something along the lines of what the MAC gets. If we're only getting 250k per school then I'd be a little upset, but I wouldn't be surprised that Benson thinks that puts us in line with the other G5 conferences. 07-coffee3

Also, a lot of the schools in the conference already have quality production departments. GS has TrueBlue.tv and even broadcasted our signing day event on WatchESPN. There might be a few schools that need to play catch up but what happens to the rest of us who have already been investing? Do we just get to pocket the money?

F&^% ESPN. Such a garbage network.

I won't pay them a dime and if that means I miss Troy games then so be it.

This only hurts SBC ratings. ESPN 3 worked just fine but now all those people who were watching just for the hell of it or for whatever reason other than being fans of the schools won't pay 5 bucks a month to watch games in which they are not invested.

And there will be many fans, such as myself, that despite wanting to watch the games won't pay ESPN to watch them either. The product simply is not worth it. Troy has done very well the last two seasons. Did we get rewarded? Nope.

Troy went to the same quality bowl game that they would have had they had 7 wins. Crap bowls against crap opponents. Glad this is the best the SBC could get...

I better pay money so I can see a 10 win Troy team go play Charles Henderson High School in the GoDaddy/TacoBell/DollarTree/Cheapshityougetforaquarteratthegrocerystore Bowl.

I can't wait to see Troy play FAMU. Glad I'm paying money to watch that battle. Please...

I'm trying to break down your post. So are you saying that Troy is too good for the Sun Belt bowls and tv deal or are you saying Troy and their sports aren't worth $4.99 a month to watch? Which is it?

I'm saying the product has to be worth the price to the consumer.

If I pay money every month to watch Troy and this culminates in Troy going to the Kia Soul Bowl then what am I paying for? I watch them play the Kia Soul Bowl every week with the already unexciting schedule packed full with crowd pleasers such as FAMU and Georgia Southern. Ugh.

I should not have to pay to watch the 78th ranked team and the 121st ranked team play each other. That is absurd.

I share your view of the college football hierarchy. But that has no bearing on whether I will watch Arkansas State.

You either want to watch your team play or you don't. If you don't care, you don't have to subscribe. It's not like Troy deserved to be in the Rose Bowl last year or anything. If you think Troy deserved more than the New Orleans bowl after getting beat down by South Alabama, no wonder you're always disappointed.

You're correct. My complaints are far reaching.

That being said, this TV deal merely compounds the issue. Basically, I feel like I'm paying to go to the theatre to watch a Lifetime movie. That and I still have to watch commercials before I find out if Brad killed Cindy's sister during a dark and twisted love triangle.

I think it’ll work like this: you buy a cable package that includes WatchESPN so you can stream ESPN, 2, U, News, etc live. Then, you can opt to pay an extra $4.99 to access all the content that used to be on ESPN3.

While I always appreciate people pointing out the obvious I fail to see how it furthers the conversation.

Obviously Troy didn't deserve to be in the Rose Bowl. Obviously I do not have to pay for the service if I do not want to pay.

With 10 teams and 10 games a year on ESPN/2/U instead of 11 or 12 teams and 7 games/year, we will all be on TV a lot more often. It's a good step forward.

Now I just want to know what the pay increase is.
