Any rumors on the pay increase? I hope you get at least 5x what you are currently getting.

This comes as close as Ive seen to answering your question.

On value---Benson says in the below interview---

"You know we are always comparing ourselves to our peer conferences whether its competitively or whether in this case its kinda the market value--We think that puts us right up there with our peers...We think this ESPN extension.....is a signal that ESPN values the Sunbelt"

Benson also said that ESPN the deal would require the schools to gear up in order to provide upgraded production facilities. He said ESPN is helping to fund the production facility build out on each SB campus and by 2020 these facilities will be fully operational. The facilities will not only allow the production of live events, but will allow students at these schools to get hands on experience in producing live events.

To me, it sounds very similar to the MAC deal (just ESPN-Plus rather than ESPN3). Makes me wonder if it might actually approach that pay level. The MAC tops out at about $800K a school. Its funny, because the language Benson uses is almost EXACTLY the same language the MAC commissioner used to describe the media rights value when he introduced the renegotiated MAC deal a few years ago.

I would be surprised if it was CUSA level, it would probably be somewhere near MAC level. My guess somewhere between 500K - 750k. Also, I imagine most these schools will need to start paying for infrastructure which will eat into their new payouts. You have to think CUSA who is needing a contract has to be wondering what is going on.

ESPN and the SBC are covering all/most of the cost of the equipment

Hey, that's easy for us. AState already took care of getting everything up to ESPN Streaming caliber a couple years ago.

What this will do is at least put us in a situation where all the basketball games will have video available somewhere. Right now I think only AState and Georgia State provide video of most home games.

USA streams men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, and volleyball. It's a very good HD stream and ESPN3 quality, just not on ESPN3.

Good to hear schools were proactive., For me not so great, I will probably get to see less SBC games since I won't pay the extra. But I do get for more chances than the old agreement on ESPN. :)

The chess match isn't between the MAC and SBC. The two conferences don't overlap or anywhere close to it.

The MAC's chess match is between itself and the MVC who has been a prime competitor in mid major basketball. MAC by signing the ESPN deal and CBS sublicense has caught up to the MVC in linear TV appearances for basketball.

The chess match is for the SBC is between itself and CUSA. If the SBC can get 400k per school (which I'd expect for 1/2 linear TV appearances as the MAC). That puts them ahead of CUSA on the realignment front.

CUSA has a secondary chess game against the A-10 which has a lot of linear TV appearances in basketball. I could see CUSA trying to cut into the A10 linear package signing away football to CBS Sports.

Yes, but do you have the fiber optics necessary to hit ESPN3 broadcast standard. Every school will be required to pay to upgrade to those standards if they are not there.

Schools who are already at that standard, get extra money it pocket early. Those that have to upgrade will see a delayed increase in value.

Just judging by teams that show home basketball games on ESPN3, those schools are:

Georgia State
South Alabama
Troy
Georgia Southern
App State
Louisiana

I would put Georgia Southern’s broadcast capabilities against any G5 school honestly

Just wanted to congratulate you guys on the new deal. I went over to the CUSA section and found it funny they were shi**ing all over yalls new deal. I’m fairly certain if they got the same deal from ESPN they would be super happy. Their current tv contract isn’t exactly good nor is it easy to access for the common non techy person.

No the $4.99 is just for the plus content I’m pretty sure. I think it’ll work like this: you buy a cable package that includes WatchESPN so you can stream ESPN, 2, U, News, etc live. Then, you can opt to pay an extra $4.99 to access all the content that used to be on ESPN3.

I think that is the case also. I'd be happy to pay $5 to watch SBC and MLS games.
Still waiting on more details to decide if this is overall a good deal, but so far it is ok. Sounds like the Belt is getting 3 more televised games, but didn't say how many were to be on midweek or if any were Saturday games. Also of those I suspect 1 is the CCG. Was there any language about limiting home teams to X amount of midweek games. And I guess we are still waiting on the payout numbers.

with the ESPN+ platform.... if you pay the 4.99, will you also be able to watch your main ESPN channels as well?

No the $4.99 is just for the plus content I’m pretty sure. I think it’ll work like this: you buy a cable package that includes WatchESPN so you can stream ESPN, 2, U, News, etc live. Then, you can opt to pay an extra $4.99 to access all the content that used to be on ESPN3.
That is also my understanding. At this time on WatchESPN I can stream ESPN, ESPN2, and the SECNetwork since they are part of my local cable package but do not have assess to ESPNU or the Longhorn Network since they are not part of my cable package. When the new change over takes place on WatchESPN the above will not change. To be able to stream ESPN+ programing would have to sign up an pay for the new service.
