Cory Sanders’ replacement - Albany DC
Football Scoop says Nick Sanchez - current DC/corners coach at ALBANY is taking Sanders spot. Lester and his connections are grrreeaaattt.
Can’t we at least hire a quality control coach from Michigan or Michigan State? Or even take a DC from another MAC school.
Looks like connection is he was a GA at Syracuse in 2011-12. Has been at Ave Maria and Albany since.

Yeah, hell there might even be some assistants at Minnesota that might want to come to WMU!

I would rather Western Michigan University avoid hiring any Spartan or Wolverine *******.

There were a couple that wanted to be our HC.
They never got an interview.

Can’t imagine our payroll available for a position coach is very high... not easy to get great pedigrees when you can’t pay them well...

I don't know. Albany is known for their stingy defensive play. Word is Sanchez can really recruit. Beat out Lipscomb for every significant battle.
I kid. Who knows? Maybe he is the next Nick Saban

Hmm.
January 2017: Corey Sanders? From Division II? Gosh, I hope Lester knows what he's doing.
November 2017: This coaching staff is lost.
December 2017: Dang, look at that recruiting class!
February 2018: Crap, Sanders was an integral part of our recruiting, good luck coach at the P5 school.
Also February 2018: Nick Sanchez? From FCS? Gosh, I hope Lester knows what he's doing.

We did take a DC from another MAC school: Tim Daoust. Do you think we have the resources to steal a DC from a MAC school to become our corners coach?
As for Sanchez, this is how you hire coaches at the MAC level. Look for young up-and-comers at the FCS or D2 level.

I agree. And Tim Daoust is arguably our worst hire in the early Lester era.

Lester would be 3rd or 4th in salary on any SEC or top P5 coaching staff. The money in CFB has tilted the hiring process. That said MAC schools will be hiring assistants from the lower pools 90% of the time. That is just economics.

I'm not concerned about this hire. How could anyone be worried? We don't know him.
We were all excited about KJ becoming the OC last year. How did that work out?

I think we know why it didn't work out. Inexperience and injury. Texas Tech didn't hire him away because he is a dolt. I'm amazed at how many Bronco fans don't realize this was a loss.

Listening to Lester discuss Johns... I don't think they got along last year when it came to how they fundamentally wanted to challenge defenses... I almost think he was advised to look elsewhere before he got picked away... I worry that Lester is turning himself into another Cubit... taking on too much outside of just being the HC... Lester wanted to be more involved in the offense and I don't think Johns wanted to share it...

Well, they certainly have to be on the same page for it to work. So if that was the case, then it's probably for the better. I don't like head coaches doing coordinator work either, but the team seems excited by it. We will see if Lester is more aggressive. I imagine he will be, just as a function of the players being more familiar with the system.

RE: Cory Sanders’ replacement - Albany DC
I would say he has a very good resume
Sanchez comes to UAlbany after three seasons at Ave Maria University where he served as Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator. Under his direction, the Gyrenes ranked seventh in the country in third down defense, holding the opposition to a 28.9 percent conversion rate in 2014. In addition, four members of the defense were selected to the All-Sun Conference Team. In 2013, Sanchez helped lead Ave Maria to an 8-2 overall record and an Independent Conference Championship, and was selected to coordinate the defense for the NAIA team in the NAIA vs. D2 Senior Bowl.
Prior to Ave Maria, Sanchez was a Graduate Assistant at Syracuse University. Sanchez assisted Coach Scott Shafer with the defensive backs during the 2011 season and assisted with coaching the linebackers during the Spring of 2012.
A 2008 graduate of Stanford University, Sanchez signed with the Oakland Raiders as an undrafted free agent and then played with the Central Valley Coyotes and the Chicago Rush of the Arena Football League. At the conclusion of his professional football career, Sanchez began his coaching career as the defensive backs mentor at Pace University in 2010.
A four-year letter winner and three-year starter at Stanford, Sanchez closed his Cardinal career with 153 tackles, including eight for a loss of yards, seven interceptions, 19 passes defended three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

So we are his first foray into D1 football at a professional level. Let's hope this is the beginning of an excellent career.

One thing to keep in mind, if we're going to be faithfully running a 4-3 attack defense, expect a fair amount of people who've worked under Shafer to end up here.
Thanks for the details Buick.

Its always good to have guys on staff who have NFL experience regardless of how long it was... Its something they can leverage not only when recruiting players, but when it comes to helping players understand the path to the NFL.
Sanchez also graduated from Stanford... he's likely got some smarts... and a P5 resume as a player...
I don't hate this hire by any means... I think its protocol in the G5 to be the starting blocks for young coaches on their way up...

It would be nice if Lester could find a spot for EJ Biggers to return to WMU... Following him on twitter he is locked in to the Florida pipeline of players...
