Experimental rules to be used at NIT
https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men...e-used-nit
The 2018 NIT will feature four rules modifications:
• The three-point line will be extended by approximately 1 foot 8 inches to the same distance used by FIBA for international competition (22 feet 1.75 inches).
• The free throw lane will be widened from 12 feet to 16 feet, consistent with the width used by the NBA.
• The games will be divided into four 10-minute quarters as opposed to two 20-minute halves. Teams will shoot two free throws beginning with the fifth foul of each quarter.
• The shot clock will reset to 20 seconds after an offensive rebound instead of the full 30 seconds.

20 second shot clock reset after offensive rebound is intriguing.

Didn't they do the quarters instead of halves thing last year?

Yes.
I wonder if doing it for a second season in a row is an indication that they will make that change come 2019

I really like that rule on paper. Interested to see it in action.

I’m a fan of the shot clock reset and three point line. I don’t see the purpose of going to quarters but that’s not a huge issue either way, just adds two more halfcourt heaves per game i guess.

I like that they are widening the lane and moving the 3 point line back.

I'm guessing they will also take away a timeout ?

Ugh. Call me a purist, but I don’t like going to quarters and widening the lane. The college game is distinct from the NBA and should be kept that way IMO because of the huge talent gap between the two levels.
However, I have no problem with moving the 3-point line back. Maybe teams will only shoot 35% from beyond the arc against us now!
I’m sure everyone had the same complaints when the shot clock came into play at the 3-point line was first instituted. Gene hated the 3-point shot being introduced to the game. 30 years later, it’s all become clear why.

I love the four quarters for two big reasons: bathroom and concession breaks.

There is no way, then, that there will be media time-outs every 4 minutes. It doesn't add up. I would assume that the media time-out will stretch to every 5 minutes, which means there will be 5 minutes of uninterrupted play(I like that extra minute of uninterrupted play)......and one less commercial break, per half. Hmm? TV advertising is not going to like that, unless, of course they extend the actual time of the media time-out to accommodate more commercials to make up for the one fewer media timeout per half.

I hate the change of 2 free throws at 5 in each quarter. Didn’t like it when the women’s game made that move and still don’t like it.

with 4 quarters, the media time out is the first deadball after the 5 minute mark unless a TO is called then THAT becomes the media break. If a timeout is called within 30 seconds of the 5 minute mark it becomes the media break. Teams do not lose an uncalled TO at the half (the "use it or lose it" timeout). Each team gets four TOs to start the game.

the change in free throws eliminates the "one plus one." That's the only real change there. After any shooting foul you shoot 2, then after 5 fouls any foul is 2 shots. Reset every quarter.
