Championship Week
Conference tournanments get started tonight in Florida. Florida Gulf Coast trying to get back to NCAAs for 3rd straight year Joe Dooley has built a very successful program

Great time of the year, especially for the mid major fans out there. Gotta love it.

I love some Dooley, wish he had gotten more of a look here.
I do love the mids kind of get their own week before the major conf tourneys start.

These tournament games for the 1 bid conferences are always some of the most intense basketball. Definitely my favorite time of the sports year

He was certainly my # 1 choice when the coaching search started. But I'm just a fan, and who knows if he'd have been a good fit for us. Have to trust Bass' judgment there.

I think we wanted stability in our next coach too. Dooley could very well be a guy that tries to move up the chain quickly. We know C.B. wanted to be here when the job was open following Buzz Peterson's tenure, thus making it more likely that early success wouldn't prompt him to leave at the first chance he got.

I never really understood why Dooley had an interest in the first place. He would have left a mid major head coaching job for a mid major, and not much more money. I think we were used for contract negotiations.

Our former coaches contract was worth double what Dooley was making. Even with his Raise he is still only making $275k. Our former coaches contract was only 300k base but he was maxing it out in incentives for well over a half a mill

Only some of the mids take the opportunity. Plenty of them play their tournaments at the same time as the top conferences. Of the 20 conferences worse than the CAA in the Conference RPI, half of them play their Final on the last Saturday or Sunday.

And that makes little sense to me. The SWAC doesn't care about anything but having their schools play tons of guarantee games to fund their programs, so them playing their league tourney late doesn't surprise me. But I'm not sure why the others wouldn't try to avoid the P5 slate. This is your one shot to get national exposure other than the NCAA Tournament.

I hear you , I wasn’t insinuating that all do it, but some do. And IMO it’s a good idea

RE: Championship Week
Big South #1 UNC Asheville has their QF game tonight at 7 against #8 Charleston Southern. They get to host the tournament on their home court. Joe Dooley and #1 Florida Gulf Coast have a semifinal home game against North Florida. Another #1 playing tonight is Patriot League #1 Bucknell hosting Loyola (MD). Western Kentucky and Middle Tennesse St are also playing the #1 seed tonight as the winner should pretty much have it clinched.

Happy March!

Former UNCW assistant (under Buzz) Matt McMahon is leading his Murray State squad (# 1 seed) against Belmont (# 2) in the OVC Championship on ESPN2 right now.

The Racers look very impressive, and are up 18-9 with under 10:00 in the 1st half.

Wasn’t he supposed to be one of the hot assistants? Guess we just wanted to cleanse ourselves from that whole era

Watching that big ACC game and Jay Bilas was just dropping shade on the selection committee in favor of and defending Mid Majors. Was nice to hear.

He left for Murray State to become an assistant there after Buzz's first season here.

Have to give credit to Bilas. He went from being anti-mid major, to coming up with inane ideas to "help" mid-majors (like suggesting the top 64 should get in), to finally understanding mid-major ball and the value it has to the college game. He is now a mid-major advocate.

Have to respect an ability to take in all the information and, occasionally, change your mind when new information goes against your former opinions.

Yeah. I remember when he was staunchly anti. Hopefully a big voice in the game like his will continue to change minds along the way.

He’s been turning the other direction the last few years. This isn’t the first time I’ve heard him make pro mid comments
