W&M held an 80-play scrimmage Wednesday night. London said he was impressed by his defensive front, his tight ends and the progress of his quarterbacks. He has not yet selected a QB starter among returning players Ted Hefter and Shon Mitchell, and graduate transfer Kilton Anderson (Coastal Carolina) and freshman Hollis Mathis.

"What we've seen is an improvement, not only from Shon Mitchell and Teddy Hefter, but also Hollis Mathis, who did a good job showing he's dynamic in his ability to run and throw, and Kilton Anderson, who [was involved] in four explosive plays, a couple for touchdowns. He's got a big arm," said London. "He's an experienced guy who's poised."

I didn't read the article because I am not a subscriber but that title is extremely negative for a team that hasn't played a down yet.

The writeup addressed the obvious risks of quick score vs ball control offenses if the offense has three and out series and the defense has to face a lot of field time. London stated they were focusing on added depth on the defensive side to counter that. He, also, stated that practicing against a faster paced offense had increased defensive conditioning.

Yeah pretty classic risk of a high octane offense, watch just about any Big 12 game and you can see why.

I venture to say, our D won't be on the field more than it was last season. 3rd down conversion last season was an abysmal 27%.

RE: 2019 Football
One of the seeming contradictions of having a high powered offense is that more players need to be committed to the defensive side of the ball for the very reason that rest periods are shorter for the D. That is an interesting thought vs the new training regime of giving longer rest periods in trining, and yes I realize it is apples and oranges, but interesting none the less.

As Tribal noted our D was on the field a lot last year. Difference is with a high-octane offense that scores you're on the field with more points backing you up.

I don’t believe your rest periods and the s&c staff’s rest periods are the same thing. They just don’t believe in all out training every day. The all out training is still there.

Correct. You may still be tired heading out onto the field after a quick score but emotionally it is a lot different than going back out after the 3rd 3 and out in a row.

RE: 2019 Football
It would also help a defense if they can create 3 and outs. A high octane offense that either scores quickly or goes 3 and out quickly will surely put the defense back on the field with little rest, but that is compounded by a defense that can’t get off the field. Get off the field, create some turnovers and they will be fine.

Depth is also a factor, so developing younger players will help as well.

Thinking we may see a bit more of true frosh this year.

Absolutely. The defense was its own worst enemy last year many times by giving up 3 first down drives and then making a stop. Get off the field quicker.

RE: 2019 Football
Especially for an FCS school I feel like we have a staff with a solid name recognition and a lot of credibility. You figure most HSers in VA know who London is, and our DC is a former all pro for the Patriots. Even some of the assistants - Ras I Dowling, Darryl Blackstock - played in the league.

Just over a week out, who do we think starts under center for the first game?

If I had a guess, either Anderson or Mathis.

To have all of these students attend basketball and football games with this energy. Whew.

Tonight spent time at the cheers for the 1st years pep rally. Loved the energy. https://t.co/YBkHWkVB9L
