Baseball
is back!

Opening day down on the gulf against FGCU. Not sure what to make of this team, but am ready for the new season.

You simply cannot expect a whole lot as Delaplane and Montgomery are both gone as well as the untimely exit of the head coach. I'm glad, however, that they named an interim coach instead of trying an 11th hour search that would have been most likely a disaster. It's better to let Roof audition this year and see if lightning strikes.

Dear Friends,
Maybe they have more talented players, but losing to Lynn University, a Division II school, is pretty embarrassing. I guess it is going to be another crappy season for the baseball team.

Yikes, we scored 13 runs and still lost... Eric Roof's trial run at HC is off to a rocky start.

RE: Baseball
I expect a long, unsuccessful year. The heart of the team graduated after an unremarkable season. I'm sure Van Ameyde saw it coming as well. Not many young coaches surrender a head coaching job to return to their former job as an assistant, unless of course they are trying to "protect" their head coaching record for the future.

This year Roof should be judged on his ability to teach and lead as well as his overall future potential. Evaluating him on wins and losses this year would not be fair.

Good points, Weaver. Roof walked into a far less than ideal situation.

Still very early if you remember Boss started out 0-17 and won the division and tournament for NCAA bid in 2008

1014 you are correct and your point is well taken. We have some very good young position players. We also have a dearth of pitching. It is what it is, Roof is forced to play the hand he has been dealt and while I am rooting for a Boss like season, my expectations are not high. Nothing would be better than to find a "diamond in the rough" coach.

Make no mistake about it. EMU baseball has made the biggest splash of any of our sports on the NCAA national level. A snowplow state University has not won the College World Series in 51 years yet "Oak" got little ole Eastern to one win away from being NCAA champions. This is our legacy sport and we need to return it to its former position.

That thought went through my mind, although salary, etc. were probably the major reasons.

My guess: Baseball is the LAST, not first, to go, though.

We only have room to drop one more program, however, if we want to stay in the FBS and MAC (which the Board and president told Wetherbee to do). Minimum is 16 and we are now down to 17. So yeah, the chances of us dropping any other sport, especially baseball, are pretty low.

If we we're gonna cut baseball, we would have done it today. The program is in no danger.

I agree.

Reading between the lines: We lose 58 male athletes. We lose 25 female athletes.

IF we have to cut ONE more (and only one is possible, as Frank notes) it could be a women's sport without causing Title IX problems.

P.S. God bless the MAC. They set a floor for various things. We don't want a s*it conference where they have say just 10 sports, the basketball team plays 5 - 10 straight OOC road games, etc.

(BTW, we are talking athletes and not scholarships. Do we need to cut roughly equal numbers of men's and women's SCHOLARSHIPS?).
