Fans have an investment of some sort and the Pats are a distant 3 in Boston proper.

I lived there for 23 years and still visit a dozen times a year for work, you couldn't be more wrong. It was like that in the 80's, but not now. Who cares what county, the freaking Giants and Jets play in Jersey. Pats have been king there since the dynasty began, period. We will see how it goes after that's all done.

Didn't know Mullet conducts Boston sports surveys in his leisure time.

I still have the misfortune of working there some and my wife went to BC,her godfather works at Harvard so I have some ties there. The place is miserable but they do love sports-pro sports. I don't see the love for the Pats that you describe but then again I am not a football guy and could careless who wins the Super Bowl or even who plays in it. Maybe they do like the Pats right now but history says it will go back to Red Sox and Bruins. I am a Yankee fan but have been to Fenway many times and always enjoy the games there but not the fans so much. Never a dull moment at a game there as the locals always deliver some type of entertainment. On the flip side of that I don't even know anyone there that goes to Pats games! I think saying it was like in the 80's is a little much as the Red Sox still have the hearts of all Boston fans even if TB wins 10 Super Bowls they will bleed Red Sox. It is in the DNA of all miserable Boston fans.

I don't claim to be an expert on New England Sports, but I do know the Boston Celtics fans are the most passionate in the NBA. They basically sell out every game, and it is one of the toughest places to play. Regardless if they're good or bad. They came back from 26 down against Houston this year, and the crowd was cheering the whole time as if it was a one possession game. I don't agree that Boston is a one sport over another sport town. It's clear that they are very passionate about all of their pro teams. Which in retrospect hurts Northeastern.

Celtics went through a lull for a bit between the Larry Legend years, and the Paul Pierce, KG time. then again after that until the last few years. But with Kyrie as the new face and Stevens as the coach they are certainly back in full affect.

Remember the Antoine Walker years? Ouch. Hard for me to imagine the crowds were loud all game during that time...

RE: @ Northeastern (Game 2)
So basically, like any other pro sports town, fans support a winner. Shocker!

nope, not a shocker. I think it's less extreme in big markets because there is enough die hards to still support when they are down, but i certainly think the support in those markets goes "over the top" when they are winning. It's more noticeable in small markets IMO. I'll use the Hurricanes here in Raleigh for example, when they stink, PNC is empty. When they win, it's pretty full and raucous in there.

Absolutely. The year they won the Stanley Cup, fans from Toronto and Calgary were coming to games at PNC and declaring Raleigh a legitimate hockey town. That's the highest praise a southeastern fanbase can get in that sport.

For Northeastern, they'd have to something REALLY special to get any traction. Sweet 16 run, at minimum. And they'd still probably get more attention nationally than they'd get locally.
