If your goal was to finish in the top four and avoid playing 4 games in 4 days, then last night was pretty much a must win game...there was no future for which to try to get execution. You needed to do what needed to be done to win that game..even if it didn't mesh with your long term plans.

Exactly. It just felt like we gave up after the first few minutes of the second half. It really did look/feel like one of our games earlier this season. We took a beating and didn't do anything to change things up in an attempt to get the W. It's even more perplexing since our game plan recently has been to mix in a lot of zone, press on made baskets, etc. It's been a successful game plan, not sure why we'd change it in the first place?

Not going with the gave up/quit crap. I get it that you don't like the coach or the team but give me a break with bashing. These players go hard and I have not seen anything to make me think otherwise. They are short on talent but not heart. Just a guess but I am thinking you never played sports at all but are a champ at telling other people how to play/coach. You seem like a smart guy but also a dude with your own agenda when it comes to UNCW basketball.

Right, but to state that you MUST play M2M to succeed in this league is false. It happened.

The UNCW teams of the last 3 years were an outlier. There's never been a successful team in this league that didn't find ways to get stops. Even VCU, with their pressing/trapping style, still got stops.

We beat teams the last several years because we overwhelmed them with length and athleticism. We got deflections, turnovers and wins no ordinary CAA team would get.

We seem to write off the last three years as an outlier a lot..... A coach having success right away, a style working...

Ah, good to see we're back to the opinion that the staff is lousy and ill-prepared. Staff has shown willingness to mix defenses and change things up. Since they didn't last night the obvious conclusion is that they gave up. It's the expert analysis that keeps me coming back.

For the record, i didn't agree to any of that. Last night was definitely disappointing though. Have to see how they bounce back tomorrow.

You are way to smart to actually believe that. There is no chance they gave up or quit and to even insinuate that tells me that you have a bone to pick with these guys for some reason.
I have seen programs and staff throw in the towel here but not in the first season! It makes zero sense to think a coach would just sit down and accept defeat. The players reflect the staff for the most part and I gotta say you are just wrong here. You guys all know I can be a very harsh critic when I feel like I see things that are not right but this a off the charts cheap shot at a new coach and staff with no evidence to back it up. They have played hard all year and should by the way and have made changes/adjustments all the way to get better. Some me what you see and I am willing to look at it but not just your arm chair opinion that they should play zone,zone.zone.

RE: @Hofstra
82 gives credit to the coaching staff when the team does well. But he's most definitely too harsh when we lose. There has to be a balance there. Sometimes you simply lose to a better team. Hofstra, though certainly not a great team, has a high ceiling because of the presence of a quality "Big 3". There's a reason they were favored by 8.

I do think we match up a lot better with Northeastern, and can bounce back on Saturday.

RE: @Hofstra
If we watched a game that utilized the types of defense we witnessed over the past several weeks that produced success...and we lost by 20...I wouldn't say a word. But I cannot come up with any explanation for abandoning a defensive mixture that has produced our only success ALL YEAR, to revert to an almost strict man to man with no press, that produced failure. Heck, I didn't say a word about our losses during that stretch, because I could see we were doing everything we could to win. Sorry, but I did not see that we did everything we could to do to win last night.

Perhaps the players made that decision and not the coach. If that's the case, i'll call out the players. I will say this though, McGrath has no problem whatsoever calling out the players.

Hey Bricks, what's your expert analysis? Were my eyes lying to me? Did they mix in a decent amount of zone and press...like we have the past few weeks when we've played well...and I just missed it? If that's the case, I apologize for criticizing the strategic move. If it isn't the case, and we actually did revert back to an almost strict man to man...a defense we have proven we will get smoked paying...why? Surely you have an opinion of your own, and not just the ability to criticize the opinion of others, right? Let's hear it.

Did they play Curry at center and move Durant to PG? If so, the fans should be pissed.

Nope. I believe we are a team with a good base, but with holes to fill. And the last thing they need are fans turning on them every time they have a bad game. Even the best teams have bad games. i.e., Golden State. Or UNC vs Wofford. I still contend that this team is a work in progress. And, while it's a pretty big drop off from the last three seasons, it's in better shape than the previous ten years after Brownell left. Very few coaches have walked into a depleted program and turned it around overnight.
This coaching staff deserves the opportunity to make things happen. If it doesn't happen, then I will speak out. McGrath hasn't even had a full recruiting cycle yet. So as of now, I will give my support and see what happens.
