OT Combs to NFL (Titans)
Combs to Titans

I am kind of surprised he made the jump. Its probably a good move as I don't think he was going much higher in Urban's system. I think this could get him a MAC type head coaching gig in a few years. Going to join Vrabel @ Tennessee.

Given his seniority in the Ohio retirement system this is a surprise

I suspect that, if he wants to have a shot at sitting in the "Big Chair" at the collegiate level, he needs some sort of NFL experience to be his hook. A successful stint in the Pro's could position him well for a shot at a MAC-type program in a few years.

Let's face it... He's got HC experience at the HS level, and a succession of assistant positions at UC and OSU. But that jump to a college HC position needs something more. It's obvious he's not going to get to sit "second chair" at OSU and the clock is ticking.

I wish him well.

With the salaries he has been, and will be, getting I'm not sure he's worried about the Ohio retirement system. With some smart investing, he'll be just fine. It doesn't appear he's planning on retiring anytime soon. Besides, his kids are all grown now (right?) so he and his wife can pretty much live wherever they want.

Plus his mom passed away not to long ago. So he just has his Dad and he may take him with him to Tenn.

1. Plus TN has no state income tax.
2. Would you prefer living in Cowbus or Nashville?

He has been coaching for 34.5 years in the Ohio retirement systems. He has the time to be eligible to retire now.

You can retire with only 5 years of credited time (took me about 10 years of substitute teaching to accrue that). It is just the money is not worth considering until you get up into the 25-35 year range.

Amazing how clueless everyone on this board is. Has nothing to do with PERS.

2018 get NFL experience.
2019 replaces Marvin Lewis.

It's all becoming clearer. He's been planning this since he took the Colerain HC position.

Is his kid still on staff with the Bengals or did he get the boot with the most recent purge?

Actually, I believe he is a part of STRS. Now the question is how long was he at Colerain? I'm sure he already qualifies, only question is what percentage. If he hit 30 years he is set. I'd think he is close.

RE: OT Combs to NFL (Titans)
The Cleveland newspaper reports that Moeller's John Rodenberg (who stepped down from Moeller this year) might go to OSU to replace Coombs. At least, he's among the 8 candidates they discussed (and most of them already have other jobs).

As a former player for Rodenberg, I think he'd do a great job for them. Actually, I think UC should have hired him years ago.

I played for Combs at Colerain. He took over my Junior year which would have been 1991-1992. If I remember correctly, before that he was at Loveland where he was a math teacher and football coach. He left Colerain to join BK's staff, so I guess about 2007.

He was at Lakota before Loveland too

A quick check of his bio says he graduated from Dayton in 83 and had his first HS coaching position at Green Hills in 83, then Lakota in 85, Loveland 89, Colerain 91, UC 07
