Overall a good guy. At times he was over anxious for Alabama or Auburn to have a great basketball team at the expense of them cheating or having a very corrupt coach.

im sad to see him leaving the AL dumpster fire...but totally get it

I've always hated his writing style and I have no idea as to his personal opinions, but I always felt that his pro- UAB stances were to stir up the Alabama fans who automatically react when anything positive is said about UAB. It was a good way to get clicks.

Yeah, that's why he kept coming to basketball games with his family.

That has nothing to do with anything I said.

I think that was just an added bonus siring up the Gumps. He is pretty sincere about UAB or a damn good poker player. I have had conversations with him in person and even sat with him and his family at games. He is a pretty good feella.

RE: Kevin Scarbinsky leaving AL.com
I believe Kevin is a real basketball fan and wants that sport appreciated in Alabama right along with football. He knows that in many schools in past times, the basketball coach was an assistant football coach "who drew the short straw", particularly for the girls. When I first enrolled at Bama in 1960, the basketball coach was Hayden Riley, an assistant football coach. It was to Bryant's credit that he hired C.M. Newton, a real basketball man to coach that sport. BTW, He also hired Sarah Patterson, the gymnastics coach who won 6 NCs.

I think Kevin likes the way major state schools have brought in top basketball coaches hired to make their teams winners rather than off season conditioning programs for football players as was often the case in my youth.

I have never met Scarbinsky but I know what he looks like and he was there outside of the football offices with hundreds of us when the announcement was made to the team that football was to be discontinued. There was not a dry eye, including his. There is a lot to be said for that. No matter how affiliated we all are of UAB Athletics, it is close to our hearts.

Frankly, a very big drop off after Scarbinsky leaves.

Probably one to the extent that they will never regain importance.

Very few decent ones left overall there.

They don't care. They can replace a six figure salary with someone making $15 an hour or better yet paid by the article. People like Scarbinsky don't fit into the business model of a blog that depends on clicks to make money instead of people buying quality journalism

The only reason the likes of Kyle Whitmire and John Archibald are still there is because of the circus around Alabama politics gets them on TV from time to time

"Scarbinsky not fitting in" I believe is the reason he decided to leave.

He saw the business model had changed, among other reasons.
