5-star KU freshman turns pro without ever playing at KU
Odd situation, in which there seems to be a lot going on that wasn't made public.

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/college...38719.html

Quote:Preston, who sat out KU’s first game for missing curfew and class according to coach Bill Self, was not allowed to play KU’s next game against Kentucky on Nov. 15 while the school looked into the “financial picture” regarding his vehicle after a one-car accident on campus. He sat out the next 16 games after that while the situation was being investigated.

In a statement posted to Twitter on Saturday, Preston said he and his family “have fully cooperated with the NCAA and were prepared to continue but it has been 67 days since this process began, and still no end in sight.”

The "one car accident" was reportedly just Preston hitting a curb with his car and scuffing the tires.

Presumably, that was just a way of saying that Preston was driving a very nice vehicle and had no good explanation for who paid for it -- though it's odd that no one just said that.

KU "investigated" and sent a report to the NCAA, asking them to clear Preston, but apparently the NCAA never did. A KU fan speculated that the NCAA ruled him ineligible but the decision wasn't made public while KU appealed, and that seems like a good guess. Particularly because there is another KU freshman player who was also being held out of games while the NCAA investigated his "amateur status", and that player, Silvio DeSousa, was cleared to play at KU by the NCAA last week.

Interesting that KU had two freshmen on their roster with eligibility issues, but not surprising that they were cautious about playing them given the fact that KU is an Adidas program and might be examined by an authority whose investigations are more competent than the NCAA's.

When Self left Illinois for Kansas, there were people saying Illinois would’ve ended up on probation if Self had stayed.

I was surprised he kept a lid on things for 15 years at Kansas because people were onto him at Illinois.

KU is a blue blood that's why. Everybody knows Self is guilty.

It's not Self that caused this particular problem. I can't repeat the inside-rumor, but if true, the cause of this player's departure is clear and not of KU's making.
