RE: Feature story on Coletrane Washington
Thanks for sharing. Great article. Hopefully he'll be a good player for the Dragons.

One thing that I'm noticing about Spiker's recruiting so far is that he seems to be going after guys who nobody else seems to want, as opposed to competing with other Division I schools for the best players. That's a concern that I have is that Drexel isn't getting the best players possible. The CAA is a tough conference and so far he hasn't shown the ability to recruit a group of players that can bring Drexel back to the top of the conference.

This is just an observation that I have so far. Only time will tell if I'm right. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Well, when you are trying to attract players that other Division I schools want and you have sub standard facilities and an administration that doesn't necessarily have a commitment to winning, you have to get creative. Seriously, I don't know how Bruiser got some of the talent that he did.

Exactly. Selling Drexel to recruits is an extremely difficult task. Bruiser always excelled and I think a main reason for that was his connections in the industry as well as his connections in Philly, despite not always getting Philly kids. He may not have been the best coach but he was a hell of a recruiter. Anyone stepping into this gig was always going to be fighting an uphill battle on the recruiting front.

To have success as Drexel you either need to be one hell of a recruiter or you better be one hell of a coach who can get the most out of their players who fit their scheme.

That's where I think Drexel may have missed the boat. I think that Ingelsby had the local connections that Spiker may be missing. Drexel wanted an experience head coach, and they got one instead. We'll see if it works out.

In terms of Spearsie's comment that the facilities are substandard, that's not what I'm hearing from some insiders. While the DAC may be lacking an extra 3,000 empty seats or a fancy scoreboard, I've been told that the player area renovations are as nice as most other mid-major facilities. Spiker doesn't have the disadvantage from that perspective that Bruiser had.

Haven't you guys read the paper?

Quote:One bottom line for Drexel: The Dragons already have shown enough to tell recruits the program is on the upswing. That seemed like a big bottom line for this season.

We'll be swatting recruits away any minute now!
