While I'm not watching this game, I completely agree with both. No way those two should be in the game at the same time (nothing against them, they're just not ready for that), and I think the beat down we're receiving in the 2nd half is likely the result of no zone. In the man defense, without even watching I'm assuming Towson's one-on-one style is just ripping our guards to shreds.

I agree, In reality there should be an eight man rotation on this team. The freshman should play but not at the same time.

RE: Towson
What is the identity of this team? What do we hang our hat on and force other teams to deal with? Besides Cacok that is? I saw a team tonight going through the motions but no fire in the belly. We don't look to impose our will.

Are we looking to beat teams with the 3? Do we try to win the turnover battle? Do we try to dominate the paint? Are we a lock down defensive team on the drive? Do we take away the three?

When I watch this team I don't know why any team would fear us, and I can't see what we do to make an opponent "play our game", because I have no idea what that is.

RE: Towson
I don't know about that. Hawks picked their game up when the walkons come in and played hard. It's about defensive effort and execution. It starts with posture first and foremost. You can't play defense if you're not low and ready to defend. I saw guys at the end of the game that played defense and are willing to share the ball. People would be amazed at what happens when that happens The rest of the guys pick it up after seeing kind of play in front of them. It's basketball 101 guys!

We actually executed a bit better late in the game with the subs, but couldn't convert.

Again, I didn't watch but that was late in the game when Towson knew they already had the W. Did they take their feet off the gas? I'm not so sure I'm to the point that I'm ready to roll some walk-ons out there as starters. Who knows though. I think 82 does have a valid question of team identity though.

RE: Towson
I did watch the game and it was obvious what ball pressure can do. It made a big difference. Players don't let their foot off the gas. They were still looking to do their thing. When you are pressured into a TO, it's because of the pressure. And, that's my big ticket. If the walkons bust their butt and cause problems, that's telling and why they should play. Nobody likes pressure, nobody. My feeling is that the bench should be WIDE open. I would do that in a minute if I were coaching and I'm glad that they played. The coach said post game that he didn't want an injury from the starters and I agree. but it was cool to see the bench fully emptied and the guys busting it hard to earn minutes. That walkon PG makes some mistakes. but that cat is quick and gets into somebody...I LOVE that. You can't ball screen that kid because he's so into the guy and so quick that he never goes under! Need more of that!

RE: Towson
Bill, I get your point so let's take it to the logical conclusion. Who do you start? Sure, the walk on PG is quick...he's 5'6" and weighs 150 lbs. Who does he replace? Talley, Taylor, Fornes? And how does that look for 25 minutes per game instead of 5?

Ok, how about Powell? Does he start? If so, who does he replace?

Ok. So, now we start Brown and Powell because they play tough defense. Can they score? Naw, they can't. We all know that which is why they are walk ons and not scholarship players. But hey, let's continue on.

So. Brown, Taylor, Powell, Cacok all start. What about Bryan? Does he start? He can't defend a 2x4 and he can't score. Estime? Who cares. We'll let Bryan and Estime rotate. Or does Gary start?

Brown, Taylor, Powell, Cacok and Bryan start. I see maybe 59 ppg. capability on the table IF Cacok can average 18 ppg. and Taylor can average 18 ppg. We can sub in Talley and Fornes to spark the offense and maybe not get blown out by 25 in every CAA game.

I like it.

OR....OR....OR...We can play more zone and maybe extend some full court press with players who know how to press and have been successful with the press. Of course, that would require some coaching responsibility instead of chastising and blaming the players.

And, I didn't see the presser yet, but did I hear correctly we were trying to avoid injury"? What, did he not care about Cacok getting injured, because he played the whole game. BS. We quit on that game with almost 7 minutes left. We pulled our starters and called it a day. We also made and continue to make a HUGE mistake when both Gary and Estime are in the game together, which is where their run happened and the lead ballooned to 20.

This was a 2 point game at 32-34 in the first half with 5:07 left in the half. At that point, everyone was contributing on offense. The last 5 minutes of the first half we scored three points on a Taylor jumper and Cacok hit a FT. Meanwhile, Towson hit a three, three jumpers and two FT's to extend the lead to 10.

Second half we came out and chipped away at the lead, getting as close as 5 points at the 17:09 mark. At 15:05 Talley hit a jumper and we were down 6. Then Talley and Fornes were subbed out and Gary and Estime came in. Can we not run our starters for more than 5 minute stretches in the middle of a comeback run?

At 11:00 minutes, just 4 minutes after the substitutions, we were down 15. A nine point swing and the game was essentially over. We never got any closer.

I'm sick of the excuses...or hats off to the other teams for having great nights. Everybody shoots over 50% against us. Everybody is a great 3 point shooting team against us. Everybody can drive to the basket against us. WE CANNOT DEFEND WELL PLAYING MAN. It's really that simple. PLAY MORE ZONE...OR PRESS. And, we cannot put Estime and Gary in while we take Talley and Fornes out at the same time. We lose too much scoring and upper class leadership on the court. Talley can play more minutes and so can Fornes. When we have Gary, Estime, Taylor, Bryan and Cacok on the court together, we only have two legitimate scoring threats in Taylor and Cacok. As a result, we try to force the ball to Cacok in the post and commit TO's.

We do not have a deep bench. Agreed. So our starters are going to have to play more minutes. It sucks, but its' the only way we win games. Last year Bryce(34.3), Flemmings(34.7) and Ingram(33.5) all averaged at least 33 minutes per game...AND WE PRESSED. This year, nobody averages over 28 minutes per game...why?
Talley(28.0), Cacok(27.9), Taylor(26.8) and Fornes(25.5) play the most. Cacok and Talley sit because of fouls a lot. Is that the reason? If it is, gee, what could we possibly do to limit fouls and allow our best players to be on the court 5-6 minutes more per game? Bueller, anyone? Did he say ZONE?

This isn't rocket science, and the game of basketball isn't a new one. There are solutions to problems that have been around for decades. Our solution is staring us in the face. PLAY MORE ZONE...a lot more. As a result you can keep your best players on the court five minutes more per game and stop the drives and fouls that limit PT for your best players. Ta da!

That was a fun exercise, and feel free to tell me what is wrong here. But, I expect nothing will change. We will continue to play mostly man, play our best players less than we did last year when we pressed, allow ourselves to be driven on and scored on at will, AND LOSE. Fun times. I can't wait until the CAA tournament.

Bottom line is if we don’t defend the perimeter we don’t win. We allowed another team to shoot 50+% from three. We had two decent games in a row and then got throttled again. UD game will be telling to where this team and coach are

Nice passion '82, I like it! Well, I was just going by what I saw last night. I really like effort regardless of the situation. They will get better. It's like what Sea33hawk wrote, they had grown men out there. We will be older next year.

As far as zone, I feel ya but if you aren't really, really active in it and mark good shooters, you're going to give up 3's like crazy. Hawks played some zone and were eaten alive at times in the corner. Coach has to mix and match it.

Onto Delaware....

We are eaten alive by the three playing man, what have we got to lose? Also, Towson always has grown azz men, including last year when we beat them twice. We held our own for the first half playing man and zone about 50/50. We then played almost no zone in the 2nd half until it was over.

So, now i'm left wondering why none of our starters play over 28 minutes? I was listening to the UConn/EZU game and UConn plays zone and had a starter averaging 38 minutes. UNCW had three guys with 33-35 minutes last year. Are we out of shape?

We need to do something because what we're doing has landed us at 4-10 and 1-2 in the CAA with ZERO road wins. We've shown we have enough talent to hang with teams, now we have to come up with a game plan for them to win.

They hit their 3s in the first half with us playing zone. That killed us. Their guards are not really that quick, so they weren’t blowing by our guys in man either.

You've got to realize that this is a rebuilding year plain and simple. UNCW lost more offense than any team in the entire nation. When that happens and you change coaches, you lose. Even if Keatts were still here, UNCW would have taken a step back this year. Continuity matters and experience matters.

I agree 100% with this. Though for me, I didn’t expect us to take this big of a step back. But I also didn’t take into account that Keatts never taught the basics of strong man to man defense. As a result McGrath is not only having to implement a new system, but also teach the whole roster to play man to man defense.

I understand fans frustration so far this year, hell I'm frustrated. But you have to take a step back and realize Mcgrath is implementing his style and is going to do it his way. Hopefully it will pay dividends down the road. Only time will tell.

As for the answer on defense for this season, McGrath and his assistants have no prior experience coaching a pressing team and it is not something you just implement mid season and just hope it works. He has mixed in some zone the last couple of games, but that is not the answer either. Towson was shooting a better 3pt percentage than 2pt percentage with us playing a zone in the first half. We just don't looked focused most of the time playing man to man and the staff is actively trying to fix that. The assistants are constantly yelling when the team is on defense. During the Drexel game in the first half when the Seahawks played fantastic man to man defense for the entire shot clock, Mike Vaccaro said that Doug Eslick was as fired up as he had ever seen him on the sideline.
