New Red-Shirt rule under consideration
A new Red-Shirt rule will go before the NCAA Rules Committee this April, that may change the way freshmen are used/not used, in future seasons, especially by FCS schools.
If passed, a Division I player would be allowed to play up to four games in a season without that participation costing him a year of eligibility. Thus, a player, like Shon Mitchell, could play up to 4 games, for the experience factor, and still have four years of full participation in his future.
This potential rule change was sponsored by the ACC and, if accepted at the meeting in April, would go into effect on August 1, thus could be applied to the members of yesterday's signing class.
It would make a huge difference to FCS schools, where depth is always a critical issue. Consider that, as the season progresses, a coach needs to lengthen his rotation due to injuries, he just figures in one (or two) of his freshmen into a big game rotation. It keeps the young players dialed in and helps protect the health of the regulars, by saving them some reps.
It would probably do away with the Medical Redshirt, as this rule would apply to the whole season, while the Medical redshirt is applied to the first half of the season.
It's hard to see a lot of downside to this potential rules change and could certainly have helped W&M had it been in place last August.
A story should appear, on this topic, in tomorrow's Richmond Times Dispatch.

RE: New Red-Shirt rule under consideration
An update on this potential rules change:
The Rules Committee approved of the potential change in the red-shirt rule and it will come up for a vote at the April NCAA Meeting. If it passes there, it will reportedly go into effect next school year (August '18).
Right now, support is supposed to be about 90-10 in favor. So, it looks good for passage.

I hate to be cynical, but has a deal been made?
FCS schools get the red shirt rule; the big boys get the transfer rule?
More scraps and crumbs for the little guys while their dinner gets taken from them?

Quite frankly, the P5 wins on BOTH, so I doubt there was a deal. If the transfer rule passes in April, I can see no good coming out of it for the "little guys".

New Red-Shirt rule under consideration
Saw a tweet that stated the transfer proposal vote was possibly being pushed to 2019.

I doubt this will be the case, but would be cool if this could apply retroactively to anyone still enrolled. That would give Funderburke and Mitchell and extra year.

It actually said in the article that it is not retroactive.

Ha! Filed under the heading "I'm not sure HOW to take that!"
I think I'll go with "at least he knew about us...good or bad."

My favorite part was asking only an ACC coach, SEC coach, and PAC-12 coach what impact it would have on non-P5 schools. The coaches from all the non-P5 schools must have been busy.
