If we build a new baseball stadium where we are looking, alcohol will be sold during the games. The no alcohol sales rule is a UNC system direct at on campus sales. The school has no say-so. But there is apparently some adjoining or nearby property that is not considered part of the campus.

So would that new baseball stadium be on or off campus?

Don't know the spot, but it's my understanding is it attached or really close to campus. But legally it is officially off campus.

Don't sweat it. You've been a great addition around here.

Yeah. If folks got in trouble for misleading info - there wouldn't be many of us that weren't in some kind of trouble.
What is strange is the admission of being in error. There are some around here from which we have never heard a mea culpa.

UNCW should sell the land that Trask is on to a Consortium of UNCW affiliated folks for $1 with a strong contract that guarantees UNCW unlimited and unfettered run of the place.

Would that sale have to be approved by the UNC system?

If you are referring to alcohol sales, that won't fly. It would still be on the campus and the UNC system would not allow it. And privatizing Trask would probably create a big headache in a number of ways.
But the school has no say-so as far as selling alcohol in campus. There's a loophole that allows it to be served without money being exchanged in the Golden Hawk Room, or Hanover Gym at this time.
They could build a new arena off campus. Maybe a combination arena and conference/convocation center.
Another idea floating around with baseball is.sharing a stadium with a minor league team where they are considering.

A multi-use arena/convention center is long over due in Wilmington. Not only the obvious, but could also draw big name concerts etc to Wilmington.

But if UNCW doesn't own the land then it can't be on campus, because campus is what UNCW owns.

Arent there some apartments behind cookout that are practically on campus but not owned by UNCW so they are not technically on campus?

It would be fun for Wilmington to have an arena and baseball stadium for this very reason.

My concern with this is if the arena is off campus, it’ll be much harder to get the students who aren’t die hard to these games. And that’s about 90% of the students at every home game. It’s not as big a deal for baseball since after opening weekend the students aren’t as big a part of the atmosphere.

That's a good point. A downtown arena like Charleston has might not work as well for our students

RE: The Definitive List: CAA Basketball Arenas/Coliseums... RANKED
Trask is a good arena. But Wilmington desperately needs a new gym downtown in order to get events. It doesn’t have to be huge. 7-8K would do the job. 9K max.

Wilmington is about where Charleston was 30 years ago with infrastructure. McAlister Field House (where The Citadel plays) was our only major arena. Even that got renovated in the late 1980s. It was a WWII building. People had to go to Columbia or Charlotte for anything major. Our baseball stadium was a field in the middle of a neighborhood. The RiverDogs probably move if that stadium wasn’t built in ‘97.

You guys didn’t even have I-40 until 1990. The only way to go anywhere was US 17, 117 or 70. If Wilmington built a downtown arena, it could host the CAA tournaments, some NC high school stuff, and decent-sized concerts. Maybe even a SPHL hockey team.

If Wilmington’s leaders had any foresight, there would be a SAL or Carolina League baseball team in Wilmington playing in a downtown stadium. I read there was one year Wilmington had a Double A team, but they couldn’t sell alcohol because the games were at UNCW. Then they had the SAL team for a year, and the same thing happened. The NIMBYs don’t want extra traffic that would come from a new arena or stadium.

To be fair to Wilmington leaders, they had a baseball team and stadium lined up but voters shot it down bigtime

It is offered to donors who give enough to go to the Golden Hawk Room. And it is not given by the school, but by distributors.
