RE: UNCG
UNCG using the press and zone to reel in NC State. Causing turnovers and deflections and giving the Pack trouble. Wes Miller has completely changed the style of play of UNCG doing this and you can see it in the record and on the floor. Those strategies dictate a game and allow mid major talent to compete with anyone.

RE: UNCG
UNCG shoots 50% (12-24) from 3, compared to 35% (7-20) for State really helped them and was the difference in the game.

Both teams shot about 50% for the game, and UNCG actually had more turnovers than State.

UNCG held on for a 81-76 win. UNCG with a big time upset AT State. Good for them. Maybe that will make our guys feel a little better about our game against UNCG. They’re a solid team this year.

They are a good team because they have become a pressing team. Last year the ran the press 39% of the time and only 6% of the time the year before that and 2% prior to that.
I don't think it's a stretch to say that Miller, a Carolina guy saw what was happening at UNCW and made a change. It's not that UNCG suddenly has a good team, it's that UNCG suddenly has a winning strategy with the press and zone.

They won because they went ZONE!!!! Keatts presses and LOST! State should have hired Miller...LOL! Keatts is a good coach but isn't perfect-see half court D. He motivates well. Can he recruit at a UNC or Duke level? I doubt it, that's a tall order. He's not going to outscheme you, we saw that. I still liked him though and he did a lot for UNCW.

Seahawks have about 4 or 5 legit D1 players than can compete at this level and maybe 2 or 3 young guys that will be good. The roster is just not where it needs to be right now to compete in top 1/3 of the CAA and if they can go .500 in conference I would consider that a success. Its hard to go backward but it has to happen with most mid majors when they change coaches for whatever reason. At this point they have played less than 1/3 of one season so I don't really have enough evidence to judge the staff on. I will say that losing the best returning backcourt player is a killer.

Agreed, you would have thought the new staff woyld have been able to see that and do what it needed to do to keep him here.
That dude was never staying here when Keatts ask to come with him and I gotta think that happened the day after the last game was played. That is squarely on Keatts and nobody else.

Keatts has the same problem as McGrath, in that he doesn't have a roster to play what he wants to play. UNCG actually has the better roster with that style of play. Too many big men at NCSU right now, with very few 3 point shooters and guards. If UNCG didn't change to a press last year, they get blown out in this game zone or no zone. Their press ate the clock and caused TO's and deflections. Once NCSU got it over half court, the shot clock was their enemy against a zone.

WE should have gone after Miller. I had no idea he had adopted a press until I looked up some stats. Sad to say, UNCG may leap frog UNCW now.

RE: UNCG
If UNCG keeps playing they way they are, Miller will get many offers from better programs. Their RPI improved from 141 to 87 with today's victory.

UNCG has had 2 good coaches in their history and both left when they received better offers. Mike Dement went to SMU and Fran McCaffrey went to Siena.

Miller comes from a very wealthy family and his dad lives near Greensboro. He has a brother who is a 6'10" walk on at UNC-CH.

UNCG smashed Elon 75-44. If Elon makes a change, Miller wouldn't have to sell his house. Maybe the schools could swap coaches.

If he has a year full of success and accumulates more wins like the one today, I doubt his sights will be set on another small mid major. If so, it would certainly be one with a bit more clout.

Narratives are a funny thing this early in the season and 8 games into a coaches tenure.

Right, 11 players returning from a regular season conference championship team has nothing to do with it their success. Wes Miller is in his 6th season at UNCG and he didn't have a winning season until year 5.

I agree with you Bricks, which is why I said they have a strong team this year. However, 82 has made a good point that Miller has changed his coaching scheme (albeit at the perfect time with a strong returning group) and is currently benefiting very well from that defensive scheme change. More to your point though, Miller wasn't making these changes 8 games into his HC career. Took him 5+ years.

No, the talent level is about even. We're better at point guard, but everywhere else they have decent talent. And they certainly have more depth. 10 different players are on the scoresheet for them thru the half, with 7 of those 10 making at least one shot from the field.

If we were significantly better, it would show in the numbers for UNCG on the season. But it doesn't. The 8.5-point spread was probably high, but they deserved to be considered the favorite in this one.

So, Miller didn't have a winning season in his first 5 years. In his sixth year(last year), he implemented the press for the first time and he won TWENTY FIVE GAMES. This year, the second year he has run the press, he has started with an 8-3 record, and just beat NCSU.

Naw, the press had nothing to do with it, just the fact he had 11 players return...right...07-coffee3

RE: UNCG
Nothing to do with the fact that he has his players and system in place either? I'm not saying the press isn't a good idea or can't or shouldn't be discussed or explored. The point, which you are willfully ignoring, is that it's asinine to judge McGrath on 8 games.

Just three days ago you said it was "unacceptable" for UNCW to lose to UNCG, and now Keatts falls to the same squad, at home, with ACC talent. THAT'S the "height of irony".

(12-13-2017 09:17 PM)82hawk Wrote:  BUT....ECU...UNCG...unacceptable.

McGrath better speed up his learning curve and fast, or we're headed for a 7 win season at best. If that happens, the downward momentum will be too much too overcome during his contract and he'll be one and done as a HC. We don't have the name recognition to overcome our deficiencies with recruiting.

All I'm asking is for you to pump the breaks and give this team, this coach, a shot. If we're in the same condition in year 2 or3, we'll all be with you. Why the need to be the first to call for his head? Miller won 9 games in his first season, and didn't face the same recruiting or scheduling challenges that this staff faced. The sky isn't falling.
