Mickey Matthews (DC) retires at CCU; new DC hired
Looks like we will be joining in the coach hunting fun. Though this “retirement” was rumored for a couple weeks now, along with another minor change or two.

I think a fair assessment is that the last two seasons have been better than the years prior (under the former DC - man we were bad), but not better enough. Most seem to think any D attributes belonged to our playmakers, vs our scheme.

There are several on our board that would love to see Chad Staggs, current DC at Furman (formerly with our interim HC/OC Chadwell at Charleston Southern as his DC there), get a shot.

And since this is a convenient spot... for those who asked about Moglia returning (sounds like yes), or interested in what health issue he faced...

I’m not sure how much love there is but it certainly would make sense.

No, but he beat our “butts”, and he can replicate it here (minus the slightly past the whistle, cockiness stuff), he will be loved quickly. Aggressive yes, unsportsmanlike no.

And I just sent out a text message before coming on here stating I was confident our coaching staff would not experience any turnover...

Nice to see him on the mend. He still has fire in his belly for sure.

Mickey Matthews has had a great and successful career. He is a legend in the FCS and while the game may have passed him by a bit, he has my respect and I wish him well.

RE: Mickey Matthews (DC) retires at CCU; new DC hired
CCU signed their man today, Marvin Sanders. Has previous experience with Joe at Nebraska, when a Joe was an unpaid asst with Bo Pelini (to learn in and outs of modern HC job preparing to re-enter coaching), and then when Joe hired him away at first coaching gig back. Also has previous FBS DC experience at UNC.

Mickey Matthews was a candidate for the South Alabama job when the program was starting. He withdrew his name from consideration.

You should thank your lucky stars that happened.
