So today on twitter, a college hoops fans in DFW asked all the ADs from UTA, SMU, TCU, and UNT to please establish a basketball tourney to crown college DI champions of the Metroplex. And to my surprise our AD and president agreed to it, UNT agreed to it, haven't seen anything from TCU and SMU yet. If it was to happen, it looks like UTA will be the first host of the tournament.

I think this is a great idea but next year we might not be as good. We will be losing a lot of talent and most of our identity and I'm not sure if the new talent is as good as advertised.

That would be really cool!

This is an old idea even when I was a student in the early aughts. Nothing really new. We’ve always been a school up for it.

I would like to get UTA on the schedule. TCU and SMU not giving up our home games for UNT.

I guess because your fans can't travel that far for a pre-conference tournament that would rotate between the 4 schools?

We sell out home games - why would we give that up for a tournament that wont compensate us for giving up a home game?

I live down the street from SMU and I've always wanted UTA at Moody and vice versa. SMU-UTA should've been established a basketball rivalry .... it's common sense that cross-town rivals are very lucrative and garner high interest.

we are usually able to schedule games with tcu and untexas but I doubt if smu will be interested. back when I was a maverick club member/donor and went to pretty much every sporting event we had, I remember a basketball game at smu where not only did we get homered but they physically hammered a couple of our guys and we got no-calls from the refs. many people on the staff said at that time that we would never play them over there again. that was quite a while ago and maybe those sentiments have died down but smu doesnt see any advantage in playing us or untexas. now that we have a nice arena maybe this kind of tourney at a rotating site could happen. they would be well attended and would be three nice games for each school with minimal travel expense.

But I can see how paying a powerhouse like Delaware State to come to Moody is much better.

I agree. And I think it will help all schools with recruiting and building up more interest in their basketball programs. It's an interesting deal and something I'm sure the players and fans will look forward to every year. With the right marketing, this thing can be a slam dunk (pun intended).
