Turnovers...
In three games, Canyon has committed 18, 21, and 17 turnovers, respectively. This absolutely must improve. While it’s been fun watching the Lopes beat up on less competitive teams, it won’t be fun when a team like St Johns comes to town and takes advantage of points off those turnovers.

RE: Turnovers...
Not to completely derail your thread, NMSU is only averaging 11 turnovers per game. And, Harris has a 3:1 assist to turnover ratio. That's the biggest difference having Coach Jans as our coach now.

It will be interesting seeing the dynamics between all the playing styles in the WAC. NMSU is crashing the boards and being very stingy with turnovers. CSUB using an ultra aggressive defense which feeds off turnovers. And, GCU stretching defense with three point shooting from multiple positions.

That St. John's game will be very telling for WAC fans. Is GCU the clear favorite in the WAC or merely among the pack?

I would like to note that this is the best our defense has looked. Guaranteed the quality of opponents are not quite there, it’s stood strong so far. As long as we force more turnovers than we commit I’m fine with it.

RE: Turnovers...
I'm less worried about turnovers that I am 1) giving quick guards open lanes to the basket, and 2) failing to box out & giving up OREBs/2nd-3rd chance points. Those are both things multiple teams in the WAC have/do well, so fellas gotta figure it out by conference play.

Little Rock is a very fast and athletic team. They jumped out to a 6-2 lead then GCU got acclimated to their style of play and did a good job shutting LR's offense down. The TO's will hopefully drop down to some where between 10-12 a game soon. This Lopes team hasn't been a good passing team in 3 games. This is fixable. But teams like STJohns BSU UofL will torch GCU if its not cleaned up unless of course JB has more games were he drops 29/30 points lol.

Oh absolutely... the defense has been pretty phenomenal! I like how Martin has shifted to coming off the bench as a 6th, 7th man. He provides a huge spark for the defense. There was a decent article on gculopes.com where he mentioned that he likes having a few minutes to study the other team, and that way he can come in and make more of an immediate impact.

Oscar Freyer is also playing some great defense. I'm looking forward to seeing how he improves over the course of the season. Last night, he wasn't a prolific scorer, but his presence was felt all over the court and he had a strong impact.

Phenomenal defense vs. inferior opponents. Grand Canyon's non-conference schedule is a joke. Almost all home games vs. cupcake opponents. Reminds me of the Stew Morril Utah State days. We will see what GCU is really made of when you play St. Johns (really a home game), and 1st road game vs. MWC team Boise State. If you guys hang tough or maybe even win then I will know GCU is for real. Otherwise, rejoicing over the crappy teams you have played up to now doesn't really show anybody anything.

They’re taking care of business at home like they’re expected to do so far. They’ll have some tough games coming up in December so hopefully the early scheduling gives them some confidence heading into Boise State, Louisville, and Illinois.

RE: Turnovers...
Only 11 turnovers tonight. Much improved. Starters spent a lot more time in the floor Freyer and Blumbergs had really great outings.

I agree... this is the easy stretch of the schedule. That being said, both UALR and Norfolk State have made some post seasons appearances in the Big Dance. Robert Morris sent UK home a few years ago. Maybe the teams were having stronger seasons back when the games were scheduled. I’m looking forward to the SJU game, although I hate the late start. I’ll have to call out of work the next day since it’ll be nearly 2 am when it’s over on the east coast.

RE: Turnovers...
Little Rock lost to a Division 2 school and Norfolk State lost to a Division 2 school in an exhibition and a Division 3 school in a real game. There are no excuses. Saying it's an easy stretch is understating it.

For real.. why do the other schools fans think we made the schedule ourselves?

The only thing any team can do at this point is play the games on the schedule. In a one-bid league like the WAC, the only 3 games that should matter this season will be played on March 8th, 9th, & 10th. If playing the schedule they've built put GCU at a disadvantage come that 3 game stretch, I'm not sure why other fans are so bothered by it. If true, I'd expect rejoicing for the easier path.

Assuming it plays out that way.
