MyBB Experimental rules to be used at NIT
The 3-point line will be extended by approximately 1 foot, 8 inches to the same distance used by FIBA for international competition (22 feet, 1 3/4 inches).

The free-throw lane will be widened from 12 feet to 16 feet, consistent with the width used by the NBA.

The games will be divided into four 10-minute quarters as opposed to two 20-minute halves. Teams will shoot two free throws beginning with the fifth foul of each quarter.

The shot clock will reset to 20 seconds after an offensive rebound instead of the full 30 seconds.

RE: Experimental rules to be used at NIT
will they still have the same amount of media timeouts using quarters?

I'm assuming not. Looks like they are trying to move the game along faster...I'm guessing that the end of the quarters substitute for media time outs.

Could be interesting to see some NIT games under these rules. The wider lanes and longer 3 pt line make it look like they are trying to open it up under the basket more and have people choose to drive it inside more.

Not a fan of quarters, but if it led to the elimination of media timeouts I could buy into that.

I'm not really sure that would fly. The media timeouts are bought and paid for. If they only had the Q breaks they would essentially be losing half of the time(4 to 2) that they can have commercials(which ultimately pay for the broadcast)

So maybe an under 5 media timeout and a quarter end media timeout?

That would be better flowing than than the current system

The women's game has been using quarters the last few years. They have 3 media's in the first half, 4 in the second, each of them about 2:30 in length. The end of each quarter is included as a media.

Media's within quarters happen at the under 5:00, OR when a coach's timeout occurs. Whichever happens first. In the 2nd half, much like the men's game, the first coach's timeout by either team automatically goes to a media, then they still have an additional media on top of that (hence why there are 4 in the 2nd half, 3 in the 1st).

It's a decent system. Women's games are shorter than the Men's under this format.

That would be fine i suspect. As there commercial opportunities wouldn't decrease.

RE: Experimental rules to be used at NIT
I'm a fan of them trying new things out. Even though I think going to quarters will take away from some of the aura of college basketball, I do think the game should make more of a transition to the NBA rules.

My Preferences...

Keep Halves
Move the 3 point line back to the FIBA line
NBA lane Width
Keep 5 fouls
Have an actual "Jump Ball" rather than use possession arrows
Add the Defensive 3 seconds Call

Can't add defensive 3 second call, too many college teams play zone.

Yeah I immediately thought about how Boeheim would have to retire and I got excited. But you're right, that was just a stretch by me.

He's all but gone anyways. I'm a Cuse fan and i'm tired of the grumpy old man show. Hell K has been playing exclusively zone here lately.

RE: Experimental rules to be used at NIT
Been very odd watching Duke play so much zone, but it's about the only way that team can get stops... I used to like Boeheim, big fan of Melo, Dion Waiters, even the final four run in 2016 was fun to watch. Just ever since he made the comments about Greensboro, he's rubbed me the wrong way. Not even from there, just an NC native.
