Special teams (kickoff returns, kickoff defense, punt returns, punt return defense) are generally a reliable indicator of depth. Last year NMSU was AWFUL in those categories this year well improved.
Martin has to be in the hunt for coach of the year though I like most outsiders remain puzzled Rose isn't carrying the rock more often. Figure this may be his week to get more carries.

If we run through conference, winning by 40 each game, Martin will be a sure pick for coach of the year.

Especially if we beat Troy by 20 plus at the end of the year. Then he's a shoo-in.

Both teams have been solid at applying pressure on opposing QBs and forcing turnovers this season. Both teams will have had extra time to prepare for this one as well.

Can NMSU finally top a Sun Belt power? I think so.
I don't think it will be a shootout, and if it is it will be one sided because I think A-States defense will manhandle the Aggie offense, in every phase.

IMO the key to this game is if the Aggie defense can give a similar performance.

You can watch the highlight of their game against ULL, and notice that their defense is beginning to come around, and is has always been expected that their defense was going to make this team special.

I think this game will be very close. NMSU is a very talented team.

They have some quality players but overall they are not that talented, but neither is AppSt.

They don't want this game to comedown to being a "talent" contest.

Everyone here also thought App St would lock us down on defense and we put up 35 on them even with 6 turnovers. Against Troy we are tied with Boise St for the most points a team had hung on them all season. The NMSU offense finds a way. It’s the defense that will be the question mark.

Actually I probably know less about college football than 99.99% of the posters here, so certainly not a "guru".

You don't have to be that smart to inject what the various "domain" experts think, +/- a little, when most fans do exactly the opposite.

Certainly not a fan of any school, and the fact that my post aggravate "A-State" fans is a huge plus.

I trust Anderson and team will have the proper respect and attitude regarding this game at NMSU. Certainly not a team to be taken lightly, but I think stAte will come out and roll to a victory by taking over and dominating the 3rd quarter.

I think the team has hit their stride and has gotten some players healthy. The defense will swarm the run and pressure the QB to cause turnovers. "Justin" Hansen is on a mission with too many weapons.

Just because we bottled up ULL's run game doesn't mean we magically figured out how to stop the run. Still not sold based on 1 game.

Oh please, you are such an ASU fan it hurts. You can say you are not all day long. It is the only team you EVER post about on every message board. You've plastered ASU topics all over Hogville. You are obsessed with us. It's flattering.

I could care less if they shut the program down, and I post about the other state colleges and universities on the forum I am a Mod on. Told them as a result of living 7 miles from the A-State campus I would have more info on them but that is it . It also aggravates A-State fans for me to post about their school, which I like doing.

None of this changes the fact they are the most talented team in the SBC, and not being a fan I can tell the truth.

Little FYI for the A-State fans here--it looks at the Massey Composite ratings are going to have your team rated higher than the Razorbacks, so have some fun with that. I also enjoy aggravating Razorback fans from time to time. Strange little State Arkansas.

I'm not worried about AState moving the ball. NMSU is putting a butt load of snaps on their defensive guys who see the field.

My concern is Rogers gets it out fast and NMSU can mix it up between run/pass.

RE: New Mexico State vs Arkansas State Discussion
Both teams are pretty similar, from what I've seen. Both are better when they're putting pressure on the opposing QB, and that's where they both generate turnovers. stAte has arguably the best QB in the conference, and NMSU's Rogers has been kind of all over the place, from playing near perfect against Troy, to coughing up 6 INT's against App St. Needless to say, putting pressure on these guys is going to be the difference in the game IMHO. If NMSU does have an advantage anywhere, it's probably on the ground, but we never seem to know just how much the ground game is going to play into big picture of the game.

It's honestly hard for me to predict how this one is going to go. stAte hasn't really had to travel too far after their opening game (which they got a bye after), so it will be interesting to see how they respond to the trip to Las Cruces coming off a big and probably emotional rivalry win against ULL. NMSU on the other hand finally returns back home after being away for over a month, which saw them travel to Arkansas, North Carolina, and Georgia, in that order. Will a week off and some home cooking help put them over the top?

My gut tells me this is going to be a close shootout, but if either team comes out slow, with the way both offenses move the ball, it could be a blowout in either direction.

In this day and time I really don't see distance and travel being an issue unless it was, say, Hawaii. What is a factor is the mental state after the payback game they gave the cajuns. Can stAte find that intensity again on Saturday? I see it as the closest thing to a trap game we play this year. I'm a tad nervous.

Las Cruces might be harder to get to than Hawaii. I'm not sure its as big of a deal in Football as it is in the Olympic Sports thanks to chartering, but it used to be darn near impossible for basketball to get to. You'd have to fly to El Paso and bus to Las Cruces to get there, and Memphis/Little Rock often don't service El Paso non stop.

Depending on how we come out for this game, this could be a blowout in either direction. I'm more scared of NMSU, than I am of Troy. NMSU has the potential to light it up when they are on and we have to go all the way out there. It's not a very good recipe.

RE: New Mexico State vs Arkansas State Discussion
In a write-up on AStateNation Anderson said concerning their defense, "The last three weeks of practice are some of the best practices I’ve been around since I’ve been doing this. That’s a testament to the fact we have guys that are hungry and as they see the success on the field, it just makes them hungrier and makes them work harder. They feel that success and they want more of it. The confidence you can see is contagious in that locker room. The great thing to me though is that I still think their best football is ahead of them"

I really don't think posters here predicting "shootouts", really grasp the significance of that statement. Maybe ULL can give you a heads up on what it means.

Looks like he is. He played the whole game against Georgia Southern.

If StAte can stop the pass/catch combo of Rogers/Scott, plus keep Rose bottled up from catching the ball out of the backfield, then StAte can win. If Rose gets loose to catch passes and Jaleel Scott isn't covered like a blanket, this could get hairy.
