Drexel Men Picked Ninth in CAA BB
Any prognostications? Delaware picked 7th. Women picked 4th. Small consolation: JMU last. At the time of the mass defections from the CAA, some posters though the new CAA would be too weak for us.

I certainly see where that projection comes from. I think we will be looking at 7/8. I think we will see progress but I dont think we are going to turn the corner for a top half finish, though possible.

I guarantee that they'll finish anywhere from 1st to 10th. Point is, with so many new faces, nobody has any idea what to really expect from this team. The 9th place is just based on known factors of who left and who's coming back.

RE: Drexel Men Picked Ninth in CAA BB
It was certainly no surprise to see the Dragons picked #9 as that is about where every preview I've seen has placed them. I think one or two had them last; I don't think I've seen anything have them higher than 9th. I am optimistic that we can finish higher than that, even into the top half. The team seemed to be making some good progress last year before Miles and Kari's injuries set them back a bit.

That being said, there is a lot of unknown with this team and there is the possibility that we crash and burn again. A key piece is the two transfer, Isabell and Harper. If they can come in and play at a high level, I think there is a lot of reason for optimism. Harper is one of only a few players in the past two years who scored over 25 points against top dogs College of Charleston. The guys leaving, Rodney, Major, and Elgin had high words of praise for Isabell. But given the cold shooting starts of the past two transfers, Freddie and Miles and the career shooting numbers for Harper and Isabell coming in, perhaps we shouldn't get our hopes too high.

The biggest question mark is who can emerge as contributors among the big guys. Even if Stretch can stay out of foul trouble enough to play 30 minutes a game (which given past performance might be a stretch), there are a lot of minutes to be filled by the largely inexperienced others or going to four guards (and there is not as much depth any more with the departure of Kari.) It would be nice to see Tyshawn step up in his last year, although Spiker's system may not be the greatest fit for him. Perhaps even though he doesn't have the last name of Lee, Jarvis Doles can come in and produce as a freshman recruit from Baltimore like Damion and Kurk did.

This is quickly becoming Spiker's team. Mojica is the only one left who really played any significant minutes under Bruiser and next year after the four seniors graduate, Sam Green will be the only one left with ties to Bru and that only as a recruit. Let's hope Spiker can get his system working.

Some of the leaving seniors, including Williams, spoke quite highly of Jarvis in some of the podcasts that I've listened to earlier. I'm hopeful Jarvis, Perry, Green and the transfers can propel the Dragons to go much higher in the standings than what is currently being predicted01-ncaabbs.

I know essentially nothing about our team which is exciting and frightening at the same time. Spiker should get at least 3 years to show some kind of progress...5 to get us towards the top of the standings. I learned my lesson through James franklin to be more patient.

The loss of Kari hurts.. A lot. But this is also a DEEP team. We have more options for players who will actually contribute than we have had in a long, long time.

This is a Tramaine Isabell highlight reel from Missouri.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRAYeV4QB-4
It looks like he probably put it together after he decided to transfer. I think it shows the potential he has. He comes with a checkered past having committed and then de-committed from Washington State and then being suspended multiple times at Missouri. Hopefully he has matured some in his year off and become more consistent in his shooting. If he has his head in the right place and can develop some chemistry with Lee and Harper, I think he can have a good two years here.

Teaser: In the week leading up to the Bowling Green game, we've got previews for each class written up with some help from a familiar name. The Jr. Class is all about Isabell and Harper. We also got some help from Mizzou people who offered up A LOT of insight!

RE: Drexel Men Picked Ninth in CAA BB
Not surprised to see us picked at 9, think we finish higher at 6-7. Losing Kari hurts (and just as I finally became confident in my spelling of Hafnarfjordur without need of a double check), but Isabell and Harper seem to be good fits for what Spiker wants to do and they're multi-dimensional in that they'll drive to the hoop and draw fouls to go with a 3 point shot. Kari took close to 75% of his shots behind the arc. I'd love to have a sharp shooter, and mentioned Kari as the player I was most intrigued by to Spiker during his introductory meet and greet for that reason, but Kurk was not too far behind Kari and Sammy and Troy have shown they can hit in the past.

I know Isabell has gotten the podcast love, but I'm really intrigued, and mentioned this on Twitter to former The Triangle hoops reporter Adam Hermann after the introduction to his new DU hoops blog fifteenthirtyeight.wordpress.com, by Troy Harper. His two years at Campbell saw him attempt about 45% of his shots beyond the arc, but he still gets foul shots on 55%+ of his shot attempts. He saw his 3G% fall from 38% as a freshman to 28.5% as a sophomore, but saw his FT% increase from 61% to 78% in same time frame. If he can get those aligned and Isabell shows as well as he's been spoken of, the loss of Kari shouldn't hurt.

Still a bit concerned with what we have in the bigs. Austin made a huge leap last year when he was on the court, but he still fouls too much and everybody else are question marks. Hopefully the driving abilities of Kurk, Troy and Tramaine will help provide easier hoops for the big guys and it won't be a huge issue. I'm ready to get things going, excited to see what year two brings. This team's first year post Bru ran at the second fastest tempo of a Spiker run team and KenPom is expecting that to bump up another 5 possessions per game. Buckle up, the Dragons are taxiing to the runway!

RE: Drexel Men Picked Ninth in CAA BB
I dont really agree with that starting five for a few reasons, some I can say, others I cant.

First, I think Overton is really cut out for a 6th man role and he will do well with it. I also think that based on the Podcast love and my other sources at Mizzou, I think Isabell starts over Harper.

My starting 5:

PG - Kurk Lee
SG - Tramaine Isabell
SF - Sammy Mojica
"PF" - Demir
C - Austin Williams

Overton, Harper, and Green are the first three of the bench, Perry and Myles the bigs.

Demir is interesting as a "stretch 4" when you look at his numbers. He's my pick, but its still early.

I didn't really agree with it either. Kurk is a given, Sammy is a senior, Tramaine has been hyped, Austin is duh. The only starter I wouldn't be sure about is the second big, assuming that's how we go and don't go small ball.

RE: Drexel Men Picked Ninth in CAA BB
I dont think Spiker recruited athletic big men to go small at the 4. Demir is touted as a "trailer" who has a jump shot which might be perfect for his transition game. All of the footage I've seen of Doles suggests he can run the floor as well. Perry is said to be very athletic, and Findlay Prep is not really a team known for playing conservative.

RE: Drexel Men Picked Ninth in CAA BB
I suppose we will start to get a sense of the rotation against West Chester. Hopefully it will look more like the Keane game from last year where there was plenty of garbage time to go around than the opening exhibition against Keiser where Rodney and Kurk both played over 35 minutes each.

I do think they will go small at times. One would think that having Lee, Harper, and Isabell all on the floor at once is not something that will happen a lot given their lack of size. If that is the case there would be 80 minutes for those three to split. I would expect that Austin will play as much money as he can stay out of foul trouble. Unless Tyshawn has really progressed over the off-season, I think he would get the 10-15 minutes that Austin doesn't play. That would leave 80 minutes to be split among Samme, Miles, Green and the new guys. I think Samme and Miles will get more than 20 minutes apiece so that would mean some 4 guard unless they would take time from the Lee/Isabell/Harper trio. I think Green will get some minutes too. That doesn't leave a lot of minutes for Doles/Perry/Tadas, so for them to get a lot of minutes they will have to earn them away from the more established guys as well as filling in the cases where defensively the matchups call for more big guys out there.

It should be fun to see how it goes. Hopefully it is not with the transfers coming out with 3-21 performances out of the gate like Miles did last year. Speaking of Miles, I think he could be a key this year. Before he got hurt, he seemed to be turning a corner last year after the cold-shooting start; hopefully he will find some redemption this year.

RE: Drexel Men Picked Ninth in CAA BB
I'll skip over the regular season and pick the post season.
CAA tournament (Drexel as a 7th seed)
Delaware(10th seed) W
Towson(2nd seed) W
Elon (3rd seed) W
CoC (1st seed) W

NCAA`(after a season where some more big programs get exposed for violation there are some surprise teams during the season from the power 5 leagues and plenty of tournament upsets)
play-in 16 North Carolina Central W - After sitting much of the game his Drexel career seemingly over, Sammy Mojica enters the game late, strips NCCC guard Rashon London of the ball and scores on a breakaway to win the game.
1 Missouri W - Former Tiger Tramaine Isabell scores 50 point as the Dragons shock Missouri in the first ever 16th over 1st seed in NCAA tournament history
8 UCF W - A big game for Drexel point guard Kurk Lee as he scores 25 point, has 14 assists, and 5 steals from UCF point guard Terrell Allen
13 UNC-Asheville W - In a battle of the tournament Cinderellas, Tadas Kararinas, Alihan Demir, and Jarvis Doles hit 5 three pointers apiece from the 4 spot to lead Drexel to victory as Jeremy Peck looks on from the UNCA bench wondering what if?
6 VCU W - As the Dragon's improbable march to the Final Four continues against a former Final Four team from the CAA, Austin Williams dominates VCU big man Khris Lane, scoring 26 points and gathering 16 rebounds
Final Four
Wake Forest W - As the Dragons continue to show amazing balance for a 16th seed, it is Miles Overton's turn to have a monter game as the Dragons advance to the championship game
Championship
Indiana W - After Drexel win a high scoring game 101-98, after the game losing coach Bruiser Flint, who took over after Archie Miller was fired after more Adidas revelations, is being interviewed, although it is hard to hear due to a particularly loud Drexel fan in the background shouting "Offense wins championships", it sounds like he mutters "What do you want me to do? Guys got to guard somebody."

(unfortunately I couldn't get Campbell and Navy in there)

A first round NCAA Tournament game against Army would be a good fit.
