Black Lives Matter protests ACLU at W&M
I took offense in that article to the statement and inference that William and Mary is a toxic environment to people of color because it is predominately white, from an associate professor at Vanderbilt no less...Really?

Just as important to the school's policies and procedures, I believe students have to take a strong stance at policing/influencing their fellow students, whether it be driving out hate acts and reinforcing inclusion, or pushing back against groups who use intimidation. Students have a big stake in their own environment.

Maybe she thinks Vandy is toxic too? Seems that W&M (#52) is slightly more diverse than Vanderbilt (#54) in the top 100 colleges for diversity.

RE: Black Lives Matter protests ACLU at W&M
I think most if not all on this board can agree on several things:

1) these actions are absurdly out of line and are both misguided and harmful to the goals these students want to bring about.

2) these students are in no way representative of the student body as a whole, and WM is thankfully an extremely sensible place with a deep commitment to making the world a better place.

3) college students do dumb things, and there are few better places to learn than WM. Hopefully these students have the opportunity to learn through discussion and dialogue with their professors and fellow students how to more effectively channel their actions to improve the school and our country. And that those professors and fellow students also learn from these students in understanding their experiences (because let's face it - while I disagree with their actions here, their overarching concerns of equality and anti-racism are valid and should be listened to, just as they should listen to others).

4) I can think of few better places than WM to have these discussions in an open and honest manner. I hope these students can come to the realization that it is through open and honest discussions that change is mad, not through shutting down such discussions.

BLM is there to make a statement. A dialogue does not interest them. Dialogues, discussions, and debates stand in the way of them making statements. It's the "Brown Shirts" beer hall mentality from the 30s. I expect violence to enter the picture somewhere down the road.

To be clear -- responses like this are every bit as counterproductive and irresponsible as what these students did. More disappointing even as these are 20-year old kids as opposed to a presumably adult anonymous poster.

Vanderbilt has become a far left enclave. They were recently in the news for opening a school for women's studies that noted sports and business majors as negative, masculine characteristics. They have a Prez very similar to Nichol who has been allowed to flower there. If we're upsetting someone there, it means we are keeping a straight path.

W&M to me always promoted their students to be colorblind, service oriented and individual achievers. Groups such as BLM do not mix here or promote the values we have established.

The irony here is that if any institution tried to suppress BLM speech, the ACLU would be the first to line up behind them.
