Why does the Sun Belt not have a rivalry weekend?
I know all teams do not have a true conference rival at the moment but...in order to increase "buy in" for the conference there needs to be rivalry weekend. My thoughts is to either have this the first weekend of the season or Thanksgiving weekend.

The match-ups:

USA-Troy
GS- App
ASU- UL
GSU-Coastal
Tx State-ULM

-or-

USA-Troy
GS-GSU
UL-ULM
Coastal-App
UL-Tx State

Good idea or bad idea? If so, where in the season would you like to see this?

Because GS is too chicken to play in Boone the last weekend of the football season.

Actually the league tried a late season rivalry weekend and it was a HUGE bust. Too many schools were out of contention and the weather sucked.

Throw in TV dictating part of the schedule and the league policy of working the league schedule around the non-conference dates turned in by the schools and it is just hard to make a date work as "rivalry weekend".

It would be hard for the conference to schedule a rivalry weekend when the contract with ESPN is going to want the mid week games to come from the above list.

What about opening weekend? (I know schedules are already made 10 yrs out...just thinking out loud here)

Bingo. We can't have a rivalry weekend as long as we beg ESPN to broadcast our games. We play on weekdays because our conference games can't compete with P5 games for ratings on the weekends.

No, because ESPN wants us on one of the national broadcasts.

This, but the other narrative rings true however.

No to playing Thanksgiving weekend. The students need to be there (both places) for these games.

RE: Why does the Sun Belt not have a rivalry weekend?
I vote no for opening weekend, that weekend is usually for big power 5 matchups like Bama vs Florida State, Auburn vs Clemson, etc.... Thanksgiving weekend is usually bad too, lack of students. I want to see those games back on the weekend instead of the mid week games(ESPN). I would like to South vs Troy on a Saturday, I feel we could fill Ladd at near 40,000 or worse case 30,000(tarps on) if Bama or Auburn isn't having a big game. Troy does come to Mobile in huge numbers.

An SBC rivalry is not an SEC rivalry guys.

We don't have any single game that is going to produce a great crowd guaranteed, and most of the time ESPN wants those games for TV. Unlike basketball, which could probably do well with a Rivalry Saturday, it does not work with football

RE: Why does the Sun Belt not have a rivalry weekend?
I am not a fan of playing the one SBC team that draws the best crowds in our stadium (App State) the weekend after Thanksgiving. I think late October is the perfect time for that game (sort of like Georgia-Florida, which is the rivalry for UGA, anyways).

I would be even less of a fan of playing that game on Thanksgiving Day if ESPN wants to move the game for TV.

We don't have a rival. Nothing will fill the stadium like UH or UTSA would.

The App-GS game would produce capacity crowds nearly every year if they were played on Saturdays again.

I am thinking if you want to make it league wide then make it the weekend before Thanksgiving.

I do feel IMHO opinion that it sucks not having a rivalry game that Saturday after Thanksgiving when everyone else in the office is talking about who their school is playing rivalry weekend.

Then maybe play UTSA or UH that weekend as an OOC game
