Louisiana folks feel free to correct me.

While the Cajuns and Warhawks have played more often, there was a gap where they didn't play at all. Arkansas State has been an annual game (save one year) for as long as I can remember.

The rival for many years was Tech, but we've only played them twice since they decided to leave the Sun Belt so that rivalry has waned.

For us, it's Arkansas State.

RE: Most Heated Sun Belt Rivalries
I think what makes GS/GSU more heated is the lack of respect both sides have for the other. I think the majority of App and GS fans have a basic level of respect for each program. I believe that similar respect is still in the minority when it comes to GS/GSU. And when the majority of those bases don't have that basic level of respect, it can get... nasty. I can only imagine what will happen when the day comes and it is State v. Southern for the East in football. Especially if it is the last game of the regular season and that respect hasn't been established.

It is a lot better than it has been, but I think it has a place here.

Semantics....really at that point. For GS the App vs GS rivalry in the FCS had national implications whether it be regular season or playoffs and it has had conference implications so far as one of us have been in contention every year so far. GS vs GaSt has not really meant much outside of the game itself and Panama's delusions and ego. I mean 2-1 is not much especially when you add in lack of success overall for you and us tanking last year. Plus your support is lacking to this point. I am sure the outside meaning, your record and your support will change and that is when it might approach App / GS IMO.

If that day comes, I'll definitely watch the game even though Appalachian somehow isn't in the Sun Belt East any more.

Sad day when App moves back down to the FCS I guess. 07-coffee3

For me, what makes the rivalry intriguing is that both schools are incredibly fundamentally different from each other. You'll have a hard time finding two instate rivals anywhere in the country that are more different than State and Southern. State is a large, urban, research school with a large enrollment and an emphasis in graduate level night classes. State also has a larger budget with small athletic success and little or relatively new traditions. Georgia Southern on the other hand is a medium-sized, suburban, comprehensive school with a medium enrollment and an emphasis on traditional undergraduate research and studies. Southern has built a reputation on doing a lot with a little and has had tons of success with an humble budget and has built decades old traditions from the ground up. Both universities are extremely proud of where they've come from but for completely different reasons and I think that's what makes it so interesting and "nasty"

It will probably just be State v. Southern for Georgia. Will likely be on lock down with another program for the east though.

IDK do you really think Coastal is going to be THAT good?

(08-22-2017 12:49 PM)DrGonzo Wrote:  I've been treated very well by GS fans. I've been to Statesboro twice. Both years we won, so I wonder if they're kinder after loses. Obviously I know a lot of other App fans and virtually all of them have one or more horror stories from Statesboro beyond anything I've ever experienced.

The only thing I recall aside from getting booed or mildly cussed at from afar was last year when we went to a GS tailgate at the invitation of a GS friend of a friend. The man who invited us was great, but his buddy told us to leave, eventually raising his voice and making physically threatening movements. The friend of a friend got very upset with the guy, but we thought it was best to go ahead leave. The first time I went to Statesboro we joined the GS tailgate of some guys who posted on AGS. I forget his name. Every one of those people were kind and hospitable. They offered us cold beer and low country boil. Top-notch and classy.

I've seen Stink fans in Boone every time we've played and I've never personally witnessed our fans abusing any of them. One group parked a car with GS flags in the window right in front of our tailgate two years ago and I jokingly covered them with clean trashbags. When they returned they laughed about it and ended up joining us for quite a while. It was a friendly, respectful encounter.

There is a lot of mutual respect, yet a lot of emotional charge. Experiences can vary wildly given game outcomes and which path you choose to take to the stadium.

I'm the guy from your first experience in Statesboro. I've personally never witnessed any incidents in Statesboro between our people and visiting fans, but then I pretty much stick to our tailgate spot. I'm sure that they happen, unfortunately, but hopefully less than they used to. Only negative thing directed at me in Boone was being flipped off and having obscenities yelled at us from a passing car on, what is it, King Street? Only happened once and it was quite a few years ago.

Through the years, La Tech has been liked enough by schools that made up the WAC and CUSA to be invited to join those conferences, so your statement that nobody "likes" us is pretty lame.

ULM and ULL hate us for sure, but nobody at Tech really cares what either of them think. I always thought well of Ark State, but you guys turned bitter towards us when La Tech left for the WAC, and you got worse when we joined CUSA. I'm sure that our recent bowl game against you guys didn't do much to improve your opinion of us either.

I was once told that the opposite of love is not hate, it is indifference. I'll start worrying when you guys no longer care what we do. Until then, I'm glad you take the time to keep us in your thoughts.

Your only relevance was geography and being located near the schools mentioned.

I'm glad we play early in the year this year while plenty still to play for for both of us.

Polls lie. #fakenews

We all know the greatest sunbelt rivalry is between [insert poster on csnbbs] vs [insert poster on csnbbs]. Real tradition doesn't matter, only internet diatribe.

Can you really call a two game series a rivalry?
