I agree. We need both. They can say they got surprised by Comcast and ASN, but your job as Commissioner is to constantly look ahead at what the conference WILL need, not what we have to have because of current events.

I'm willing to give him some time to learn "on the job", but to this point, I have not been impressed.

CAA Viewing Announced
The question is: what are we doing individually to actively pursue supplemental broadcasting, ala ESPN3, CSN, etc., as other CAA schools already have, or are we simply deferring to the league office actions? This reflects on our new AD.

Richmond just announced:
http://www.richmondspiders.com/news/2017...ckage.aspx

In addition to their two CBS league games of the week, Albany has four other home games, as well as, their opener at ODU, set for ESPN3.

RE: CAA Viewing Announced
Me neither. CofC and UNCW in basketball last season was a great championship game. But it was stuck on CBSSN, meaning a ton of people couldn't find it.

The reason why Comcast cut their deal is because it cost a "lot of money" to broadcast those CAA games. Also, the Wizards and Capitals rights fees probably were a part of this. CSN is also changing to an NBC network as of 10/2 (beginning of NHL season).

They had to produce the CAA games themselves, and they cut costs last year. The only broadcasts last year outside of the CAA tourney were games from Towson and W&M, the two easiest schools to get to from their DC home base.

That's dumb because Comcast (or HTS) has broadcast CAA games for decades. It has been an integral part of their winter programming schedule. And not just their channel in the Mid-Atlantic. CSN New England; CN8; SNY; their Philly channel; even CSS (which ceased to exist). In the last few years they started syndicating the games to other parts of the country.

The CAA quarters and semis last year were on CSN Chicago and California (one of their channels for the San Francisco Bay Area). The semis were on their Northwest channel as well. Even though a small amount of people were watching in those parts of the country, it was up there on every cable system in those parts of the country for those who wanted to see it, plus the people nationwide who pay for the Sports Packs on satellite.

Both semis were great games. On a Sunday in March, probably there were a decent number of casual fans who check to see what college basketball games were on. The casual college basketball fan usually goes to the network stations, then ESPN and ESPN2, then the local RSNs. The CAA now will likely lose that opportunity to gain casuals.

Interesting that Richmond swung that, their alumni base is comparable to ours in terms of size and interest in football (maybe less interest in football). If we are free to solicit our own TV deals, this seems like an opportunity to get something like this for ourselves. I can only hope we're working on that, but I don't know if I'll hold my breath.

CAA Viewing Announced
Have to believe Richmond and Albany have been proactively working on this, since CAA media day, or well before. Today's recruits no doubt look at what kind of TV exposure they will be getting, and could care less whether the stadium has wifi or not ....

We benefit some from this deal as well
"The Nov. 18 Capital Cup rivalry game with William & Mary is scheduled to air on CSN."

Yeah, but that gives us one broadcast game compared to Richmond's five...Since those games are being produced by their own TV team, it gives them ample opportunities to promote the program and school during the broadcast.

RE: CAA Viewing Announced
My initial gut reaction is that the Richmond deal is due to the fact that they are an A-10 school, and Comcast seems to have replaced CAA hoops with A-10 hoops, and the football coverage of this A-10 school is just ancillary.

If my gut is correct, this is a problem for us in terms of conference affiliation.

Maybe, since JMU is in the same boat as us, despite the FCS champ attraction.

RE: CAA Viewing Announced
Not so sure about that, since the A10 had four media partners for basketball in 2016-17: ESPN, CBSSN, NBCSN and ASN. ASN gave syndication rights to Comcast SN, but is no longer, so, unless there is an A10 basketball deal in the works with Comcast, I don't see the built in connection.

Bernadette McGlade has always been a very aggressive, forward thinking Commissioner (even though I may not have liked it - especially effectively poaching a rival area league to make them weaker...). She continues to make the A-10 the strongest Mid-Major in the region. The four partners for her league shows that very clearly.

RE: CAA Viewing Announced
I have a hunch that this isn't costing CSN anything, and Richmond offered it to them. It's smart on Richmond's part; producing your own games is not that hard (we already are close, if not there already, with our video feeds), and it's good exposure. All CAA schools are doing a pretty high quality video feed at this point, so you offer it to the local TV network for close to nothing, or nothing at all. Think of the recruiting leverage for Richmond; "we're the only FCS school on the East Coast that had all of our home games broadcast on TV." It's a pretty good pitch.

UR will be broadcasting in the Richmond market. That is not a big market but it is a market. JMU (Harrisonburg) and W&M (Williamsburg) do not have local TV with which to partner.

Location, location, location.

It's being picked up by CSN-MA for a lot of them, which covers a bigger area. Further clearances may have it broadcast further than just the Middle Atlantic region.

RE: CAA Viewing Announced
I saw the MWC is experimenting with streaming games on Facebook. Their commissioner seems to be very forward thinking (They had games on twitter last year). If networks won't air CAA games on TV (Which I kinda get, they probably don't draw great ratings) I'd like to see the conference try out avenues like this. Hulu, Amazon, Netflix and the like could all have interest in streaming sports at somepoint soon, no harm in being their test case.

Personally think the twitter streaming option is the best. Anyone who follows Tribe Athletics will get game updates in their stream. Each update can have a link to the live game.

This is our athletic dept in a nutshell. Sit back with fingers interlocked behind their heads and marvel at how much we do with so little and absolutely ignore the fact that changes are on the horizon. Everyone is so content.

CAA Viewing Announced
http://www.richmond.com/sports/ur-strike...daec5.html

Asked Wednesday if other CAA teams, such as James Madison or William & Mary, had expressed interest in televising games, CSN Mid-Atlantic Programming Manager Joanna Shapes said, "I can't comment on ongoing negotiations." She added that no deal had been finalized with JMU or W&M.

Pete Clawson, W&M's senior assistant AD for public affairs, said the Tribe athletic administration is "looking into linear options."
