OT: North Texas backs out of game with Army to play Liberty
http://swcroundup.com/news/2017/5/10/nor...ign=buffer

Quote:North Texas AD Wren Baker announced that the Mean Green's series with Army, two remaining games in 2018 and '19, have been canceled and replaced in part by the new series with Liberty. In and of itself the series cancelation isn't big news, however Baker's reason for canceling the series raised eyebrows.
According to Baker: "The Army series is difficult on your team. Every defensive coach in the country would tell you preparing for the triple-option gets you out of your regular plan. Then you have to adjust the next week and go back to what you regularly do. You also tend to rack up some injuries. We like playing Army, but we felt we could get more out of playing other teams."

In case anyone (especially other GS fans) think we don't schedule well because our AD stinks at scheduling.

I thought I posted something about this last week, maybe it was on the CUSA board.

Saw on reddit that NMSU signed 2 in season H/Hs with Liberty too....

Nick Saban had almost the same reaction.

Army ain't exactly Alabama, but with a 10-27 record the past 3 years you need to schedule as many winnable games as possible.

This should be on Georgia Southern's recruiting video. Money can't buy that type of material. 04-cheers

That said, GSU sux. COGS

I think it's kind of bad form to back out of a series with one of the service academies. North Texas, like most G5 schools, is trying to make a name for itself. That's not the way to do it.

That is actually genius. Gives both teams a home game. It will be probably late in the season. If something better comes up drop it to a regular home and home. Win-win if you ask me.

I don't have a source but I read somewhere that it was just a regular home and home with no money involved. Just can't remember where I saw that.

The funny thing here is that UNT fans had held to their wins over a bad Army team this year as proof that their program was on the way up. Now they are publicly ducking them to play someone else...

I smell fear. NT might need to change their color from green to yellow.

Man, I love that offense. Got to R E S P E C T it - even if you don't like it!

Hope we get to see some old GS Flexbone this year, Looking forward to the return of a real triple option this season.

This just in/ video of NT AD Wren Baker... as he drops Army to add Liberty....

No need to drag GAST into this.

At least not till we actually beat them again.

From slick Wiley with one foot out the door to the awful offense of our two headed OC nightmare last year - I just can't take another loss to that program.

Here's to the return of the Georgia Southern Triple Option and running through defenses ( especially ga state) "like $#!+ through a tin horn man!" again 04-cheers

That BS about "more injuries" is mostly hogwash. The whole having to switch up your defensive preparation bit though I totally understand.

I completely understand not wanting to play a game against a team that still plays the triple option. What I don't understand is why anyone would schedule one if they didn't have to. I've never once seen a La Tech team defend against the triple option well, and I've been watching Tech football for 50 years.

They don't run the triple option anymore so it's really a moot point.

UNT fan on there messageboard have already posted link on the dangers of cut blocking.
Quote:If you're not sure just how dangerous the block is, consider that the Texans and other teams who employ a high percentage of cut blocks do not allow their linemen to cut block in practice.
Broken ankles and legs and torn knee ligaments suffered on cut blocks that didn't draw penalties or fines are not uncommon, making the cut block perhaps the dirtiest legal play in what is arguably the most violent team sport.
"You're not going to trick me into that debate, but when a guy cuts me I want to DDT (him)," a Texans defensive player said with a snarl.
The DDT is a professional wrestling move in which a wrestler puts an opponent into a headlock and pile-drives his head into the mat. That is how angry cut-blocking makes defensive linemen.
