Not Even A Pandemic Could Stop Him

Seth Frankoff returns to the show despite several challenges

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – One inning pitched, one hit allowed, no runs, no walks and no strikeouts. That was former UNCW righthander Seth Frankoff's pitching line when he returned to the Major Leagues earlier this month with the Seattle Mariners.

It was Seth's second appearance in the major leagues but the first since the 2017 season.

Frankoff pitched the last two seasons for the Doosan Bears of the Korea Baseball Organization, helping the Bears to the KBO title in 2019. Over the course of his two seasons in the KBO, Frankoff posted a 27-11 mark, including an 18-3 record in 2018. In a league where high-powered lineups are the norm, the Raleigh native compiled a 3.68 earned run average and surrendered just 17 home runs.

Frankoff opted to return to the United States with the hopes of signing with a major league organization and on Feb. 14, he inked a minor league deal with the San Diego Padres.

In mid-March, the Covid pandemic shutdown baseball and the world, for the most part, and Frankoff returned to his home in Cerro Gordo, N.C. He was later granted his release by the Padres, allowing him to find a better chance to get back to the show.

Frankoff would continue that path to the major leagues on Aug. 11, he joined the Mariners organization on another minor league deal and reported to its alternate training site in Tacoma, Wash.

Just 19 days later, Frankoff's contract was selected by the Mariners and he reported to the big league team while they were in Anaheim.

On Sept. 8, he completed his journey back to the major leagues.

RE: Seahawks in the Pros
That just shows that I'm a basketball guy that likes college baseball. I never saw this coming. He didn't even seem to dominate in college unless I'm mistaken and I'm not just talking stats either. He didn't bring it mid 90's in college unless I'm mistaken but he was a solid starter. He had the drive to get it done and he always had size. He put it together and now brings it mid 90's on a 4 seamer so good for him. Not sure what his out pitch is but I'm glad to see this.

He has 3 primary pitches. The 4-Seamer, Cutter (88-89 MPH) and Changeup (85 MPH). He has a Curve too but doesn't throw it often.

He topped out in the upper 80's coming out of HS in 2006.

MLB Postseason Opens Tuesday With Seahawk Feel

UNCW is represented throughout all levels and areas of professional baseball

WILMINGTON, N.C. – A grand total of six former Seahawks, including five alums, will see the fruits of their labor on display beginning on Tuesday with the Wild Card round of the Major League Baseball playoffs. From player to scout, each Seahawk has contributed to the successes of their teams.

Ryan Jeffers earned his spot on the Minnesota Twins postseason roster after hitting .273 with three home runs over the course of 55 at bats. Jeffers made his MLB debut on August 20 with a pair of hits against Milwaukee. Jeffers was named to MLB Pipeline's All-Rookie team last week.

Carl Willis is also in the postseason as the pitching coach for the Cleveland Indians. The former Seahawk is in his second tour with the Indians organization, having previously served in the same capacity from 2003-09. During his career, Willis has had four Cy Young Award winners on his staffs including CC Sabathia (2007), Cliff Lee (2008), Felix Hernandez (2010) and Rick Porcello (2016). This season, Indians' ace Shane Beiber is a front runner for the 2020 Cy Young after going 8-1 with a 1.63 earned run average and a league-leading 122 strikeouts.

As a player, Willis made seven postseason appearances for the Twins during their World Series title run during the 1991 season.

Jeff Porter, a 1997 graduate of UNCW, serves as the Athletic Training Advisor for the Atlanta Braves. The 2020 season marked his 36th with the organization and the third in his current capacity. Ported joined the Braves as an assistant athletic trainer before being named head athletic trainer in 2003.

Clinton Sewell is a member of the San Diego Padres Scouting and Player Development Staff. Sewell joined the Padres in 2019 and works in Player Development Technology and Video. Last season, Sewell worked with the Texas League champions Amarillo Sod Poodles.

Also a member of the San Diego organization is former infield standout Jake Koenig, who is the Padres scout in the Carolinas and serves as an international cross checker. Koenig played shortstop for the Seahawks in 2011 and 2012, earning All-CAA second-team honors in 2012 and helping the Seahawks to a CAA tournament championship and NCAA Regional appearance.

Rounding out the Seahawk contingent is Rob Flippo, the bullpen coordinator for the Miami Marlins, who return to the postseason for the first time since winning the World Series in 2003. Flippo was on former UNCW Head Coach Mark Scalf's staff from 1999-2001 where he served as hitting coach and worked with the program's catchers. Flippo joined the Dodgers organization in the summer of 2001 and became the Dodgers bullpen catcher in 2002. The Dodgers made 11 trips to the postseason during his time with the organization.

Sept. 29 – Astros Vs. Twins (2 p.m. / ABC)
Sept. 29 – Yankees Vs. Indians (7 p.m. / ESPN)
Sept. 30 – Braves Vs. Cincinnati (Noon / ESPN)

RE: Seahawks in the Pros
I met Carl Willis when I lived in Cleveland (2008). I was in a apt downtown a few blocks from the stadium. There were a number of players and coaches that lived in the same apt. I would see them down in the gym fairly regularly. One day, I was in the gym wearing a UNCW shirt, and he was there meeting up with a player. He saw my shirt, came over and we talked. Introduced me to a couple of the players and coaches from time to time. It was cool, I would see a few of those guys regularly and they would usually ask if I was interested in going to games and gave me tickets. So I'd end up sitting in the player family section and taken care of rather well.

A lot of times, I didn't really like Cleveland much but those guys were all really kind to me and it provided good memories in a relatively "meh" city for a few years.
