RE: NMSU coaching wishlist
I think any non P5 or Big East job not named Gonzaga, Wichita State or UConn will always be stepping stones. Just the nature of the business unfortunately.

In somewhat surprising news Wichita State assistant coach Chris Jans and NMSU assistant Jesse Bopp are the finalists for the NMSU job.

NMSU should be good with either coach. Jans is the tactician and Bopp is the recruiter. Bopp's youth concerns some Aggie fans. Is he ready to lead? And, if Jans can overcome his past off the court indiscretions, we still don't know it he can recruit? Both will need to build staffs to diminish their individual weakness.

If Jans gets it, hopefully he can retain Bopp. I think they can compliment each other

I can't see Bopp wanting to hang around NMSU if he doesnt get the HC gig. I also hope for NMSU and you Aggie fans that Jans the creep doesnt get the job.

Highly unlikely. If Bopp doesn't get the head coaching job at NMSU, he'll probably join the Traitor on his Lobo staff; more money there than staying on at NMSU as an assistant under Jans. Bopp played a big part in our success last season. I'm sure the Traitor would want him back to run his defense, be his main recruiter, and help him win at UNM. Already Aggie assistant Marc Hsu has tweeted he is joining the UNM staff. The other assistants remain on NMSU's staff until a head coach is named. Maybe some might stay with Bopp if he gets the head coaching job. But we will see.

If Jans gets the job, I'm sure he has been around long enough to put a staff together quickly. And, if he gets the job, hopefully he can keep the current roster and incoming recruits intact; and bring a new staff that can recruit as well or better than our current staff.

The recruiting chain that made NMSU successful the last 10 years is all but broken...

When Menzies left, he took our California connection and our overseas recruiting in France and Africa with him. NMSU used the California connection to bring in Wendell McKines and recent notables Braxton Huggins and Eli Chuha. Our overseas French connection brought in Bandja Sy, Remi Barry, Sidy Ndir, and Johnathon Wilkins. And our African connection brought in Chili Nephawe, and Pascal Siakam.

And now with the Traitor gone, NMSU loses our Canadian connection. He brought players like Hernst Laroche, Tyrone Watson, Renaldo Dixon, Daniel Mullings, Sim Bhullar, Tanveer Bhullar, Matt Taylor, Jalyn Pennie, and Jermaine Haley from up north. But with this current Aggie staff he established recruiting ties in the Northeast with the hire of Jesse Bopp and JUCO recruiting with the hires of Marc Hsu and Guy Meyers. We will see if that is all lost now.

Yeah you would have to think Bopp would follow Weir if he doesn't get the job. I have a feeling Jans is going to get it.

Well, until someone gets the job. NMSU's basketball program is on a holding pattern and recruiting has come to a screeching halt. NMSU was rolling before the Traitor left. Now the Aggies level of strength for the up coming season is uncertain. This situation might be small a hiccup, much to do about nothing, or a wholesale change of the program.

One of these assistants being considered may end up being a great coach, but you have to wonder why the Aggies don't hire a proven D1 coach? Seattle hired an experienced D1 head coach. CSUB hired an experienced D1 head coach. GCU hired Majerle, a former NBA all-star and assistant coach. UTRGV and UMKC hired experienced assistants from P5 schools, good hires for them, but I just think NMSU should be able to find an experienced D1 Head Coach. Thoughts?

Well no D1 head coach applied. The timing sucks, are D1 HC's really going to want to move with the Spring signing period already underway? NMSU does not have the money to go after an experienced D1 HC.

Yeah the timing is just awful. No time to post another head coach otherwise they would probably go after Forbes or Dooley. The money is also a big issue. They can't offer that much. Also Weir left in part because he couldn't use the facilities all of the time which is kind of embarrassing.

The Pan American Center is not owned by NMSU Athletics. It is owned and operated by NMSU Special Events. MBB, WBB and VB are tenants.

I understand but that has to be extremely frustrating for a coach.

Hope he gets his act together this time. Seemed like such a promising hire for Bowling Green. Im sure he can be successful at NMSU but still creepy.

Jans’s termination letter said that he admitted publicly touching two women in a "way that attracted public attention.” He also admitted “patting the second woman on the buttocks at least once,” a scene that’s captured on the video. The letter also states that Jans admitted calling a third woman “a *****,” which started a confrontation. The university claims in the letter that that because of “breach of comportment obligations” that the university doesn’t owe him any of the remaining money on his contract.

With a resume like that, NMSU doesn't need to worry about him leaving early to coach somewhere else. He might be on the fast track to become President of the United States, though. #JANS2020

If I remember right, he did have a 4 star JUCO coming to BGSU so he can get talent.

He is a really great coach it was just the off court issues holding him back. I'm guessing he must have got his act together. I have seen a lot of Wichita State fans absolutely praising the guy for his in game coaching. This could actually be a great hire. Unfortunately for NMSU that means Bopp will probably be gone to UNM. All the players wanted him. Jans might have a player revolt on his hands.

WAC fans should be happy, NMSU will no longer be an obstacle in MBB.

RE: NMSU coaching wishlist
I doubt that. The guy is an excellent X's and O's coach. In my opinion Weir was thoroughly outcoached last year by Barnes, Marjele and Pope. I think Bopp would've been outcoached as well. The only worry is Bopp leaving and a players revolt. Hopefully for NMSU Jans can get it under control quick. This is probably going to turn out to be a great hire. Look at his resume. 1 year at Bowling Green and over 20 wins is remarkable. He was also just promoted to associate coach under Greg Marshall.
