Personally, IMO, of the original 5+1, #4 and #5 were pretty weak and Wahlberg's +1 did and didn't fit into the whole series at that point. I have really enjoyed the two new ones in the new series so far.

I think the new movies have been pretty good. The original (1968) movie is great, the sequel was ok, and I'd say 3-5 were all garbage. You can track the movies' budgets by looking at costuming and makeup. With each sequel, you see fewer and fewer apes with full makeup. By the last couple of movies it boils down to just a handful of actors with full makeup and a ton of extras, all in little better than dime store gorilla masks. Look at some of those crowd shots - it's pretty hilarious.

3 was borderline... right at the tipping point of being good/bad... but 4 and 5 really did fall off IMO.
