Basketball staff has now been informed that, contrary to previous assurances, overseas trip this year will not be permitted due to a lack of funding. Devastating news, given that players and recruits have already been promised this.
A younger, less peaceful, Got Ribe might have gotten mad about this. Maybe even irate, given the way it was handled. But anger wouldn't have solved anything. I think this is a problem that the Tribe community can solve. We just need to raise approximately $75,000 very quickly.
Please be thinking about what you can do, and let your fellow basketball fans know of the issue. But please don't send anybody any money just yet. Mrs. Ribe, who is the brains of the operation, is trying to get us a One Tribe-One Day number for this purpose.
That is frustrating to say the least ... So thankful for your leadership Got Ribe's; appreciate you being solution oriented ... I surely hope our incoming athletic director won't allow our teams to be treated like this. Our staff and student athletes deserve far better and especially with 3 open scholarships, this is a great potential recruiting tool right now.
This is a cool opportunity to help show Ms. Huge how important Tribe BBall is to us and how behind it we are. Could be a great jump start to the Bball Booster Club.
I'm in.

Stay tuned for more.
You're more peaceful? What are you smoking?
This stinks.
This smacks of a bait and switch in which boosters pay for the trip and the $75K gets used for another sport.
This is a betrayal of the men's hoops program by the AD, and a betrayal of the efforts to enhance that program.
If we don't have $75K for this trip, I can only imagine next year's OOC schedule ... multiple pay to play away games, no guarantee home games.
Men's hoops should just spend November and December on the road, playing all of the PAC 12 teams on the road ... that way the team gets a trip to a foreign country (the left coast)(joke, folks) and the AD fills its coffers to fund other sports (not a joke).
Looking forward to SH's view on this crap sandwich.

I said I'm peaceful, not stupid.
Evidently, despite there being public plans about the trip, the department didn't budget for it. There's no pre-existing funding to supplant. And if there is an OTOD account number set up, it will be explicit about the allowed usage of the funds.
Hanlon's razor tells me that this is no bait and switch: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
If they knew about it, but didn't budget for it, the $75K still ended up in the hands of another sport.
So, now the AD says, in effect, if you want it so badly, have your boosters pay for it.
So, there's a budget.
We don't budget for pre-season trips.
What do we budget for?
Of course, if we budgeted for the CIT/CBI, and we didn't go, we could use those funds, or the countless other ideas posted by folks on this board instead of going to the CIT/CBI.
No wonder we've been abandoned by Richmond, ODU, VCU, Mason, etc. ... This is amateur hour.
Exact destination hadn't been set. In typical W&M fashion they're looking for the least expensive option available.
May seem picky, but as someone on a 5 yr plan with my summer school commitment, destination would factor in my committing more money for a trip. "Generalized overseas trip" does not positively influence my decision. Opportunity for a European trip would move the dial for me, more than a carribbean/beach trip, for the understood educational pluses. Otherwise, I'd rather see that money go to "buying" an attractive home game or two.

Unless you're a basketball fan of William & Mary, I don't think you know what that word means...
Amid this fountain of outrage, I do have one question. Did Tony make sure the funding was available - and I mean see a line item in his budget or the AD's budget - before making plans?
