Women's NIT 2017
Drexel will host Duquesne on Friday at 7 PM at the DAC.

If Drexel wins, they would play the winner of Villanova/Princeton. Not sure if it would be home or away, but at least they have the chance to play 2 games relatively local.

The 3rd potential bracket opponent for Drexel would be either JMU/Radford/St. Joseph's/Virginia. So there's a chance for a rematch of either JMU or SJU in the 3rd round.

Duquesne - On paper, they don't strike me as a team that should even be in the WNIT. They finished 7th in the Atlantic 10 with an overall record of 18-15 and an RPI of 124. Their only saving grace to their season was that they won 4 in a row at the end to get to the A10 Championship Game before losing to Dayton.

Drexel is 3-0 against the Atlantic 10 this year. This looks like a favorable matchup and a team that they should beat if they come prepared to play. With the exception of their magical 2013 run, Drexel has fared rather poorly in the WNIT, so there's no such thing as a guaranteed win, even at home.

Hopefully Drexel hypes this up! A good crowd for a Friday night game seems very doable. Gotta like Drexel's chances of winning at least this first round.

After halftime the Dragons were down 1, but they've opened up a 10 point lead due to some scrappy steals and offensive rebounds. Some really good energy from the team this quarter.

Winner faces Nova.

Things getting testy. A lot of fouls being called against Duquesne, whose coach was getting increasingly displeased. He then got ejected, and since then another technical was issued to a Duquesne player for complaining about the call. I don't necessarily think most of the fouls have been bad, Duquesne has been playing a very in your face defense, but I can't imagine many of their supporters are going to give the refs
glowing reviews.

RE: Women's NIT 2017
That was a LOT of fun tonight, and great to see them finally get another WNIT win after losing at home in the first round the last two years. If you're going to spend the money to host games, you've got to win them once in a while.

The first half of basketball was as good a half of basketball you're going to see. It was a close, hard fought battle of two pretty evenly matched teams. I thought it was going to go down to the wire, and I wasn't even sure if Drexel had enough in the tank to win it. The 2nd half was the fun part. Drexel came out of the locker room and dominated the 3rd quarter, and then Duquesne got completely unraveled in 4th quarter, with their coach getting ejected and then the other T on 55. First time I ever remember a WBB coach getting ejected in a game.

I was concerned with how this team had played down the stretch, and It was great to see that they took the WNIT seriously and want to continue playing.

Next up is Nova at the DAC on Sunday. I was actually hoping to see a road game on Sunday. I guess that they would have played at Princeton had the Tigers won, and they've probably already shut down the Pavilion for renovations, so I guess Nova won't be playing any home games.

Crowd wise it was your typical Friday night WBB game. Attendance was only 417. Decent student turnout, but the typical sitting on their asses student crowd, not like the good ole days. But those who were at the game had a great time. My teenage daughter, who I've kind of sensed was starting to get bored with the games this year was really into it from start to finish and had a great time. I guess her boredom this year was more with the men's team, but I can't really blame her.

One thing I can tell you is that Drexel really values their WBB program. They must lose A LOT of money on these WNIT games, by hosting them, despite lack of attendance. For example, so many schools, including Power 6 programs that are loaded with money are being outbid for home games. Lots of times it's because their arena isn't available, such is the case with Virginia. Or maybe these schools just don't put any value in the WNIT, because it's beneath them. My guess with Villanova not wanting to host is that either they don't have the staff availabie with their men in Buffalo, or they've already started tearing down the Pavilion for renovations.

RE: Women's NIT 2017
Crazy back and forth game today. Drexel trailed 10-0, then scored 18 in a row to go up 18-10. Then they trailed by 18 with 8:56 to go before making their furious comeback at the end. Drexel lost despite holding Nova without a field goal for the final 8:56 of the game. They had many chances in the final few minutes to tie or even take the lead but just couldn't get it done. I wasn't thrilled with their play selection in the final minute, and I thought that they panicked a bit. But I guess it's really tough to get off an open 3 point shot when your opponent is putting all 5 players on the perimeter to defend the shot.

Season ends at 22-11, and ending as one of the top seasons in program history. A season that included a win over last year's national semi-finalists, an early top spot in the mid-major poll, and just the 8th postseason win for the program. Hopefully Denise can continue to keep this team among the top of the CAA, and hopefully soon they'll find a way to break through to get back to be the #1 team again.

Thank you Sarah, Jessica, and Megan!!!!

JMU beat Virginia and will host Villanova on Thursday in the 3rd round. I think that JMU is a much better team than Nova, and I'll be rooting for our CAA foe to knock down Nova Nation in the next round.

Can't speak for singular WNIT games, but the women's program has done well financially to go along with their success on the court. They've been in the black the past four seasons I have info on and were plus ~$250,000 during the 14-15 season.

Edit: Posting that gave me reason to check if 15-16 data was available, and it was. Make that five straight money making seasons, although down from 14-15 to ~$180,000. Both expenses and revenues topped $2 million for the first time.

Maybe I don't understand how college sports works, but I don't understand where the revenue is coming from for Drexel's WBB team to be making so much money. It's not coming from ticket sales, which I estimate is about $50k/year in total. Donations are quite minimal as well. And the CAA doesn't generate the kind of revenue that the bigger conferences get.

JMU lost at home to Villanova by 2 in OT. So both CAA teams fought them tooth and nail to the end, but neither could get past them. So there are 8 teams left in the WNIT and all are from the power conferences.

...and 3 are Big 10 teams, almost 4 with PSU falling to VT

For those who did not continue to follow, Villanova beat JMU after beating us and then fell the other night in the final four to Michigan 65-61. Michigan gets a lopsided rematch from earlier this year in the championship against Georgia Tech

RE: Women's NIT 2017
I really think that the men's NIT needs to expand to 64 like in the WNIT and then eliminate the "C" tournaments. I'm actually thinking that is the plan for the owners of the C Tournaments...that they hope that the NCAA buys them out and eliminates them.

In MBB, there are so many fans who are against their teams playing in those tournaments, thinking that they're meaningless. But if you just move those teams into the NIT, then that extra game takes on more significance.

RE: Women's NIT 2017
Michigan pulled off a miracle in the WNIT Championship game yesterday that went 3 OT's. With the game tied at the end of regulation, a GT player was fouled on the potential game winning shot in the final second, and she MISSED BOTH FREE THROWS where making just won would have won the championship.

Michigan bid for the home game but the game was moved to University of Detroit since their arena in Ann Arbor was unavailable.
