Georgia Southern coliseum feasibility study commissioned
Quote: Georgia Southern University's Athletic Foundation has taken a bold step forward in beginning the process to determine the feasibility of constructing a new coliseum to replace the aging Hanner Field House.
Local governmental entities and GSU have been in discussions for the past three years regarding the need for a larger facility to accommodate the needs of the university and the community. Two popular locations they will explore to construct a proposed 6,500-seat coliseum is the corner of Fair Road and Tillman (which was the location of the original football practice fields) and across the bypass from Paulson Stadium in what is now called the South Campus expansion area.
The Athletic Foundation confirmed the study in a statement released this week.
"The Athletic Foundation recently approved an economic impact and feasibility study associated with the building of an arena that could be used by Georgia Southern Athletics and other organizations," said Bryan Johnston, assistant AD for Athletics Communications. "The process to begin this study has been ongoing for three years and is just now materializing. Information from this study may guide us in making the best decision regarding a potential arena."

Wow didnt think I would see this for another 5-10 years. If they are doing a feasibility study it usually means the building is not far behind.
This is yuuuuge for the basketball programs as their is no doubt Hanner is probably holding us back a good bit in basketball but I would have rather seen the home side of the football stadium be done first.

I say make it 8000 seats even if that means you have to put it off longer.

Only if Bulloch and Statesboro want to chip in and have access to it.

6,500 seats should do. The main concerns with Hanner Field House has been the number of people for local high school graduations. If build with a open concourse it would be able to hold a larger crowd for these type events. Standing for these type events is better than not being able to get inside Hanner Field House.

Good luck with that eagles fans. I wish astate would look into the feasibility of a modern, smaller basketball arena (and leaving the convo solely for concerts and other outside hosted events)

If they really are considering placing it by Beautiful Eagle Creek on the old football practice fields, I think that would be a home run. With Statesboro trying to revitalize the downtown area and turn the Blue Mile into an actual thing, Georgia Southern needs to be growing toward downtown not away from it. It would make me feel better knowing that the fields and Beautiful Eagle Creek wouldn't become some vacant lot on the edge of campus and we would already have plenty of parking over there. It might also boost economic development in the immediate area. Lord knows that section across the street by Gnats needs a face lift. If we built it across Veterans Memorial we would have to clear land, run utilities out there, build parking, and we would be stretching the campus pretty thin. Plus those apartments over there aren't exactly friendly and inviting places for fans to be around...

We've got so many other things that have to be done first, no way we can even bother with this.

Thanks. Was going to ask what y'all thought about the location. I think one of the things that hurt UTA football was the isolated location of the stadium when it was built prior to the 1980 season. Attendance rose from the old stadium, but not enough to keep the president from pulling the plug after the 1985 season.

Now we just need a billionaire hedge fund manager to give us a check for $80 million or so.

you're trying to be funny? (You failed, btw)
Nobody builds 'coliseums' anymore, not since war bonds stopped being issued and FDR's public works projects ran their course.
But if you do build it, you must name it War Memorial Coliseum like all the rest of them built in the 40's and 50's.

I also laughed at the "university in boone" retort. With so much going on at App and some get their overalls in a wad about what the name of a study is.....hmmm.....regional university complex.
