So if any of those three teams win the socon tournament none of them get the auto NIT bid? If so that's dumb

Update: since it was a tie the team of those 3 that goes tha furthest without winning the tournament gets the NIT bid.

That's a smart way to do it

In the 3-way for 1st, UNCG gets the #1 seed by way of the best record against the other 2 teams (ETSU and Furman), at 3-1. ETSU went 1-3, unfortunately, for the #3 seed - and thus must struggle against Furman (again) in the tournament semis, should both teams get there (which is FAR from automatic). Had ETSU beaten UNCG in that last game last night in Greensboro, they would have had the #1 seed. So.....huge difference.

The NIT bid is more complicated. It's actually hard for to determine IF the NIT guarantees a non-NCAA tied champion. One thing out says they take the furthest non-NCAA advancer (as you suggest above). Two other places (the NIT'S own site and wikipedia) tends to read like they don't necessarily take one in such a situation. (They have a committee that decides things in gray areas, it seems.) So, it's equivocal and confusing to us. I guess we'll just play 'em one at a time and see what happens.

As a side note, I don't know if you all have noticed or not, but Chattanooga has totally imploded after being the favorite pre-season and leading (or tied for it) most of the year. Internal dissension, dismissal, suspension, etc. Long story. And germane, because they're (still) the #4 seed, which gives UNCG the (apparent) easiest path to the finals.

P.S. -- UNCG and Furman are both quite good. Both have multiple weapons, play smart, don't beat themselves, and defend well. Wouldn't shock me to see any of the 3 main possibilities representing our conference win an NCAA game - obviously depending on seed - which most likely would be a 12 to 14, we're guessing. (More likely 13 or 14 imo.) Not saying such a win is likely - just that it wouldn't shock me at all.

Good luck to you guys.

I've always read the NIT guarantee was only for the #1 dwed should they fail to win the tournament. If you guys found a way to guarantee an additional auto bid kudos

In other weird tournament news Conference USA allows the host (UAB) determine what time slot it wants to play it's first round game.

RE: Other Conference Tournaments
The Southern allowed CofC to choose the afternoon or evening when the SoCon Tournament was in North Charleston in the '00s.

In 1991, the NCAA allowed 16 seed Georgia State to play at noon or 7 on Friday in the Omni. The Panthers choose to play at noon, hoping a few students would wander to the game from their campus. A few, very few, made the walk.

RE: Other Conference Tournaments
Winthrop of the Big South got that privilege too which is why their 1 v 8 game is at 7 tonight instead of the traditional noon slot.

Speaking of the Big South.....CAMPBELL WINS over UNCA. 7th seed over the 2 seed. Chris Clemmons with a heck of a game and a sportscenter top 10 dunk!

They are set up nicely to make the finals as I would think they would be the favorite over the Radford Liberty winner.

Stan Simmons was very similar, but jump even higher. I was at his first game against UNCC and he jumped OVER a guy in that game. Clemmons was awesome tonight and took over!

The CAA is MUCH harder to win than these leagues. Hawks have to win game 1 and if they do, I think they make the final against C of C. That's the game that most want to see and is best for the league. Still, it's hard just to get there.

RE: Other Conference Tournaments
UNCA and Winthrop tied with 15-3 conference records. It is unfair to make a team such as UNCA play the tournament at Winthrop's home court at 1 PM on a Thursday when Winthrop's students can be there, but very few other people.

UNCA still has a better RPI than Winthrop.

It also sucks for UNC Asheville that the Big South doesn't use the Socon way of giving the auto NIT bid. If Winthrop wins the auto nit bid goes to waste

Yeah that seems to only hurt their conference.

I may be mistaken (not gonna go back and re-read stuff), but my impression has been that it's the NIT who does the choosing/selecting. They decide whether or not to take a team such as UNC-A in this case.
