RE: OC on the move?
I'm not sure we will go back to Laycock calling the plays. In recent interviews, Jimmye has relished not having as much responsibility. I can't find it, but there was a video interview that really sent this message. Anyone remember seeing that?

Here is a quote from the RTD (July, 2016)

“I’m doing fine. I’m good to go with it. I’ve got good people around me, good coaches I’m working with. I feel like I’m not doing nearly as much as I used to have to do.”

He may have enjoyed giving up the play calling to Rogers because of his experience and trust. But who's to say that Laycock will have that comfort with a new guy?

I think you took my comments the wrong way, but that happens on message boards. Your information is truly inside, you clearly know something others do not. It has to be inside info, since there has been no announcement out of Laycock Center yet. I don't doubt the accuracy of your statement.

I was having fun with your announcing the announcement though, you got me there.

Your screen name lead people to believe that you are an ex-Tribe wide receiver, what years or decade did you play?

No offense taken. I was only trying to help minimize the speculation, which sometimes can lean towards the bizarre. I'm as perplexed as others why there hasn't been an official announcement. This situation is unique, but it is an amicable departure. Still, a lot of questions remain and I'm sure some answers will be forthcoming, hopefully soon.
In response to your question, I played football and baseball back in the '70s and have tried my best to support both programs ever since.

Quite an accomplishment to compete in two sports. Congrats!

Thanks. I ended up playing baseball for only 2 years as I had to quit. The schedule, even then, was a real killer. And many of the professors back in the 70's were not, how should I say..."overly accommodating" to athletes. I have a lot of respect for the Tribe baseball players today....the team trains year round and they are playing a lot more games than we did.

I'm not sold on the JL is a genius mantra. His 37 year old offense has limitations. Last year's problem IMO was the QB play, and quite honestly with the exception of 2015 QB play has been a problem for about 8 years.

RE: OC on the move?
I generally liked the offensive play calls the last couple of years better than I did Rogers first year or the last couple of years before Rogers came. The play calling had gotten too predictable and a bit too conservative.

I agree that QB play and injuries at other positions have been limiting factors.

RE: OC on the move?
I too felt very comfortable with Kevin Rogers and will be sorry to see him go. More than anything else, I was impressed by two things: (1) the improved play of the receiver corps, and (2) the way we tailored our offense to maximize what we had to work with.

Regarding point one, I felt we built a lot more depth at receiver after Kevin arrived. This is despite the fact that Kevin Hart was injured for much of his career, and David Carlisle did not develop. The last two years, we got great contributions from walk-ons and guys who were not in the same category, talent-wise, as Tre McBride. I think Kevin should get at least some credit on that end.

Regarding point two, I felt Kevin did a really nice job of tailoring the offense in 2013, 2014, and 2015 to what Grahrio and then Cluley were capable of doing. Hence the low INT totals. This past year, I think we saw Cluley making more throws that, in earlier years, he avoided. I certainly don't hold Kevin responsible for Steve's numbers this year; the only way I would is if I had time to go back and compare the play-calling from 2015 to 2016 and see if we deliberately tried to make Steve into something he was not.

One thing to remember is that we never got to see what Kevin could have done with Ortiz. I know I'm going to provoke Rocco with this, but I felt that Ortiz had a stronger arm and was faster than Cluley. Unfortunately, the blind butchers cutting on shoulders down there in Williamsburg made sure Ortiz never saw the field his last 2 years.

Agree. At this stage in his career, and the state of the program, I do not see JL taking on game day play calling. The whole dynamic is going to be interesting to follow.

When was the last time the "genius" word was used? It has been some time since that was a regular comment.

A lot of folks on these boards would never say anything negative or constructive about him and view him as untouchable.

As an alum that follows the SOCon a little closer because my sons played in the league, I know this coach was offered the OC job at a couple schools before heading to the Valley to UNI and now is at Fordham. Great history with quarterbacks and nationally ranked offenses. http://fordhamsports.com/coaches.aspx?rc...h=football

For what we pay him and the results he achieves, in light of the challenges of winning at W&M, he should be untouchable. I have complained as much as anyone in recent years, but the man has done a remarkable job and deserves to stay as long as he wants. Getting marginally better results over the last decade may have been possible, but may also have required shelling out a much higher salary and making sacrifices the College was not prepared to make. Our kids graduate, are rarely embarrassed on the field and are usually held accountable for poor off-field judgment. While I would certainly like to see more seasons like 2009, I'm ok with where we are.
