Jack Whitman's two handed slam over Gustys WAS the greatest highlight play I have ever seen in my 43 years of watching Tribe basketball at the Hall. Crowd exploded.
Hofstra wanted this game more than us. They were hyped in warmups, and came out with far more energy than us to start the 2nd half. If not for Jack's inspired/explosive stretch to pull us back in and get the lead, Hofstra would have pulled away. Really a shame to get that kind of monster effort from Jack, and not have the rest of the team rise with him, with the exception of Daniel who was spent at the end from his effort on both ends.
We were a much better team with Tot at the point tonight. He had 8 rebounds in 16 minutes, and simply is able to see the floor better with his height. I had concerns about his handle earlier in the season, but we are a more potent team overall with him than Cohn at this stage. When Tony reinserted David and Mal with 4:30 to go, I thought game over to Hofstra, and it was. I expect Mike will get the start for senior day on Saturday, but Ollie deserves the chance to start from his game play going forward, or at least see far more time on the court. I am now in Tot's corner until proven wrong. Tony has not been afraid to juggle the lineup, and I would be very surprised if we don't see some movement there.
We never made any effort to deny Wright-Foreman the ball in the second half, so, he expended no energy until the ball was in his hands. Hofstra was in the bonus so early in the 2nd half, that we could have gone with a strategy to trade players fouling Gustys away from the ball down the stretch and bear his making 1/2 FT's versus just letting their guards go off on us. Think Tony is far better from the bench than he showed tonight, but we just allowed Mihalich to ride his horse(s) to the win. No coaching involved from Mihalich's end.
Gustys appeared to me to still not be fully recovered from his hamstring injury. Dangerous team for Saturday, assuming they play up to their ability on Friday, and not down to their opponent. They simply don't have the depth to make it past Sunday. Barring injury, with Buie back, their redshirt freshman who was NY POY, and assuming they'll add a JC or grad transfer, I'd rate them next year's preseason favorite, even over CofC.
