RE: Drexel
We are seeing a lot of players under perform this season. Prewitt, Malinowski, Burchfield, Cohn, and Seacat transferred. I think this board including me were very high on that list coming into the year with unknown expectations related to Pierce and Knight. Dixon is pretty much performing as expected with some flashes of brilliance and some down games. Whitman, and Rowley have all played way above what I expected although both were supposed to be very good when they came to the program. I think the extra redshirt years helped both.

So what happened? It isn't the loss of Tarpey on the court, but maybe in the locker room. I can't figure this team out, but we've got two kids with the flu and another with a gimpy ankle. Let's get healthy and pack the Hall on Saturday.

RE: Drexel
Despite the flu running through the players and coaching staff (just eight players could practice full time Tuesday and Daniel held out of a couple of practices due to various minor injuries to shoulder/neck and a leg) there is NO excuse for the effort and display put on last night.

We stink at road games, but could you really call it an oppressive road game with a "crowd" of 533 that included, according to John Leone, "half consisting of W&M supporters"?

I would hazard a guess that Shaver will have no full practice before the Saturday game because of half the team being ill and the fact they won't have gotten back to Williamsburg, assuming they didn't stop to eat somewhere, until three or so in the morning. I see, at most, a sit-down session reviewing
C of C personnel.

Many of us are putting too much responsibility of Knight and Pierce...they are 18-year old freshmen who are up and down in their play but have loads of talent and will be major players for us. I put the onus on our older performers...I had believed they had stepped up during our four game blitz at home and a 110% effort at Towson. Last night we appear to have reverted to the lack of leadership we saw earlier.

I wonder which team will show up tomorrow afternoon.

Is there another D-1 team capable of scoring 60 points or less against Drexel?

Delaware did. North Texas was close. If you were looking for an endorsement there isnt one, its almost impossible to do.

We've had these games in past seasons even with "leadership", even at home and without half the team sick or injured. If it weren't the Gold Rush game, I'd keep Omar and Daniel out on Saturday. Their health is more important to the rest of this season than any single game until the tournament.

When we're on a 4 game home streak of averaging 90+, we have great leadership and work ethic. When we lose two on the road, all of a sudden we don't have any leaders or work ethic. I would hazard a guess that most people here find leadership and work ethic based on results, not the other way around. Everybody is happier when we're winning and is discouraged when we're getting blown out.

Its snowing and you guys don't need his services to win this game. He could go outside and make snow angels and be just as effective on the outcome.

OK I'll award half credit

Losing to Drexel is one thing (and Drexel has players on offense like Lee & Rodney that we can't defend), but looking lethargic and like they don't give a flying F out there is another, especially coming off the Towson game where it seemed like they just about gave it all they could. Don't want to hear the flu excuse since players had it against Towson last weekend and gave a much better effort than yesterday.

Now watch us beat Charleston & Towson at home and lose to Hofstra at home & Delaware on the road because W&M is the very definition of inconsistent. I guess we just have to pray that whatever teams W&M gets in the tourney have "off nights"

Agreed. I think most people on here a rational enough to differentiate between a high effort loss and a low effort loss.

Tony has made a point to comment recently that Justin is a confident player and he deserves more minutes, but he is unfortunately behind Omar. I may be totally off base, but my concern is whether the perceived droppage in enthusiasm with Justin is simply freshman adjustment hurdles or a reflection of underlying fractions with this team. Team chemistry issues and resulting poor performance can raise their ugly head more with adversity and road trips when you're forced to be with each other 24 hours. Chemistry and bonds can get better, or just become more magnified and harder to overcome. I hope my instincts have no real basis and we have both of these two talented freshmen around for their bright futures. A flag went up for me, though, when Tony made the comment. Despite my strong belief that Hunter Seacat was and is responsible for his own actions, I very much heard the reactive comments made on here from, whom we presume to have been, his father. It's important to listen to all feedback and learn from it.

I remember how disappointing the Tribe team was the year before our great 2009/10 NIT year. There were obviously issues in the locker room with that disappointing year that changed dramatically the following year when the team make-up changed. No other way to explain the night and day change in team effort because the talent level was not significantly different. With the exception of the great home game stretch in the past 2 weeks, this season has eerily reminded me of that 2008/09 team. Hope I'm very wrong about that, as I'd enjoy nothing more than to see this team become what they are capable of THIS year.

Pierce has had an up and down year for sure, but we can't forget that he's just 18 years old and has shown flashes of what he's capable of. I'm sure he's frustrated with his playing time coming off of an all state high school season but he had to have known when he committed here Prewitt would get majority of minutes at the 3 spot this year. We can't expect him (or knight) to be perfect as they havent seen nearly enough minutes to adjust to the college game yet. I still believe him and knight will both have outstanding careers here.

Lately, Pierce seems to be trying to do too much on offense. This is probably the result of getting reduced minutes and wanting to prove himself during these short stretches. As a result, he sometimes plays at a frenetic pace that leads to mistakes offensively. What he doesn't realize is that he's a huge asset on the defensive end and could probably do nothing but pass and move on offense and still add value when he's in there. In any event, I like his upside and don't have much issue with these "growing pains" as I think he will be immensely valuable to us during his time at the College.

Looks like we spent the night in Philly and are practicing in the Palestra this morning. Wonder what that practice was like.

Hmmmm...maybe the practice should have been in a HS gym.

Hopefully the practice involved Glover, Schlottman, & Mostafa getting 1st team reps and Shaver making it clear if that kind of energy is shown again then those 3 (& Whitman) will be the only players on the court.

Crazy part is, we won the final 30 minutes of the game by 3 points. That's how bad it was for the first 10 minutes, ...that we lost by 22 points.

Also, while Omar had a couple "Bad Omar" moments, I thought, overall, he played well. The announcers couldn't get over his array of shots. If he doesn't score his 17...

Not sure if you ever played college basketball or if you are just a fan. I never played college hoops, but I played a different sport at WM and we were on buses, vans, whatever. It gets real crappy when you are away from home, on the road, missing class, and having the flu or whatever. Plus by this time in the season everyone is nicked up.

Show your pride tomorrow in person or virtually. I'm proud of these kids. I hope you are too.

I remember being at Zable the night we lost in the football semis to JMU. I hung around after the game at the end of the stadium where the players come out.

They were kids, in tears at losing and seeking solace from their parents and girlfriends. It really helped put things in perspective.

I see members of the basketball team watching games at the CAA Tournament (in the past) and women's basketball games (this year).

I'm sorry but they are just kids. They may earn money playing basketball in Europe in the future but still, just kids.

+2

I have the same perspective after riding in the College's vans for four years in another sport.

Nothing like driving empty roads and arriving back on a sleeping campus at 2 am.

Memories always come back when I drive back to the Burg ... like tonight for tomorrow's game. I think the team will forget about Thursday and respond.
